Date Night | Amish Friendship Bread PIZZA Together

We are using our Amish Friendship bread starter all kinds of fun ways and tonight is Pizza Crust. What have you made with your starter?
For this recipe:
I used a cup of active starter, 3 cups of flour, 2 Tbsp oil, 1/2 tsp salt mix well and let rise preferably 8 hrs. You can add a bit of active yeast to help the rising but I chose to just see what it would do. Next time I think I will add a bit to give it a boost.

Just a hint on keeping your Kitchenaid mixer working for a long time is to make sure you go up and back down in speeds one increment at a time. That saves the transmission, which is usually what wears out first! You’ve inspired me to make my own friendship bread starter, I remember when it was all the rage when I was a young mother. Happy baking!

That's a good reminder! Sometimes I get impatient and just go from 0 to medium. I can see how that is actually really harmful on it.

You can buy a kitchenaid that has a 1 hsp motor that mixes everything. That’s what I have. I can’t lift it but I can slide it. It is strong enough to even run the attachments and have them work properly. It was expensive but it should last thru my great grand children.

I have the same KitchenAid bought in the 90"s. I don't use it daily but do use it often. It's still a workhorse and I'd be sad to live without it. Mine has a red band where your band is black. And I love making sourdough pizza. Best ever!

Just a tip for others that might be starting their Amish friendship bread… I used a gallon freezer bag for two different batches (with two types of flour) since we are gluten-free. I used the kind that had the pull across zipper attachment, and it has failed twice when I have been mashing the bag gently. I haven’t been that mad in a LONG time. Lol! 😂 Not much was lost either time, but it’s a frustration that Rachel must have known because she used the large jar. 🏆🤪🏆

Oh yum! I was going to make pizza for supper but decided to go with spaghetti instead. If you grow and dry your own herbs, hand crush some and add to your crust when you mix it. It adds SO much flavor! I grow and dry thyme and oregano every year just for my pizza crust and spaghetti. Now I'll need to try stuffed crust too lol!

Hey, Todd, if you roll from the center out on that dough, rather than back and forth, it will be more tender, and will flatten faster. From the center out, you aren't continuously rolling the dough over itself as in the back and forth motion.

About every 10 years, the grease in your Kitchenaid needs to be replaced. Kevin over at Living Traditions made an excellent video of how to do that. Just search kitchenaid on their channel and it is the first video. Hubby recently replaced mine and it worked out great. I bought the grease Kevin recommended. I knew something was wrong b/c the grease in mine broke down and was running down the side, so it needed to be replaced.
