Amish Friendship Bread PIE Crusts 🎄 HOLIDAY PREP
Things get really busy for us during the holiday's so today we're going to get ahead of the game. We're going to make up a batch of pie crusts and freeze them, so they're ready to go. The recipe we're using uses Amish Friendship Bread Starter ( how to make it here • Amish Friendship Bread... ). It makes a total of 4 sheets, so either 4 pies or 2 if you have a top & bottom. If you've got a starter going, we're going to be making all kinds of things this winter, so follow along ♥
Ingredients
1 cup Amish Friendship Bread Starter
2 cups shortening
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar- I purposely didn't add
4 cups flour
1 egg - I purposely didn't add
Instructions
Add shortening, flour, baking powder, salt and sugar together in a medium sized bowl and mix well.
Beat the egg in a small bowl and add it to the Amish Friendship Bread Starter.
Add the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and mix together.
Divide crust into 4 equal balls, and roll out into the shape your pie tin or pan requires, making sure that the crust is slightly bigger than your tin.
Press into the bottom of your pie tin.
Bake according to your favorite pie recipe.

@@taraolson5870 then do you just thaw and use like a new starter?
I just wanted to tell you I am a 71 year old Grandma in Ohio. Most of the things you do I am not physically able to accomplish anymore, or having animals or a garden are not a choice in our area of Ohio or in my or my disabled sons capability. Not looking for sympathy, just sharing and letting you know that so MANY of your cooking ideas are very helpful and enjoyable to learn. I don't remember who sent you to me, maybe Whipporwill Holler, you I also love dearly, but I'm so glad they did! I have fallen into the rabbit hole of going back and watching your videos. I spent one day last week going back and watching your videos all day long and daily I watch at least 3 or 4 along with any new ones you put out.The two of you remind me so much of the working relationship and chore sharing my late husband and I had for over 39 years. It warms my heart with memories and I'm so glad the two of you, like the Brown's , have that to share and will someday have those memories. Just wanted you to know, what you are doing and sharing with your videos has great value, even to us old folks. Sending much love and appreciation for the value and inspiration you so willingly share.
I started mine too and I can use mine on Friday. I want to try pie crust and oatmeal cookies!
I make a ginger spiced pumpkin cheescake with a cinnamon Graham pecan crust
Oh this is such a 'Why had I never thought of that!' moment. I always double up pastry to freeze one but never even thought about pre-rolling it out! Such a good idea as really, the mess of getting the flour and rolling pin out with clean up is what makes it the chore and puts me off making pies. Having a ball in the freezer saves a little time but having it rolled out saves time, effort and clean up. Genius Rachel :)
I can’t wait to try mine I’m just at day 6.
This was a perfect video for me! 4 pie crusts and I’m making 4 pies for thanksgiving. It’s just me, hubby, and daughter this year. I don’t want to leave the farm. I want PJs and Pies! ❤

I love this method of saving pie dough crust in freezer!!! And who knew the starter was so versatile!!
Thank you so much for the ingredients list on the video! I know it's a lot of editing work but that was so helpful!
Rachel! That is so simple it is ingenious! Pre roll them. So smart
Amazon sells some great reusable freezer bags. I love em. Thanks for the recipe. Daughter found one that cuts half lard and butter. Very flakey crust.
Yes! I been waitin’ on this video! Want to get some crusts in the freezer!
Looks like a great pie crust recipe. I'm looking forward to the English muffins or maybe some bagels.
I would never have thought to make pie crust from this starter! Can't wait to try all the possibilities! Also, I loved Todd's drive by guest appearance! Hi Todd! 😁
wow this is a new one, thanks. 😊
I just made half the recipe because I didn’t have shortening and didn’t want to use all my butter. 2 crusts are perfect, though, for a hearty pot pie with all the Thanksgiving leftovers I have! I may just top it with mashed potatoes instead of a crust and then I’ll have another for a pie. I also am one who didn’t realize how versatile this starter was. Thanks for putting together these videos. Next, the chocolate bread! 😋
I have never use my starter for pie crust..Done everthing else with it..awesome I need to do this...thank thank..great reciepe...🤗💕
Thank you soo much. I make 2 pumpkin, a cherry and an apple every Thanksgiving/ Christmas. And my starter will be ready just in time.
I made this pie crust today and made a potpie, it turned out perfect! Thank you for the ideas and looking forward to more of your AFB starter ideas!
Hello from Europe, little country on Adriatic sea. Starting my happy Amish friendship bread starter yesterday. Hoping to be successful🤞. This pie crust afther rolling and freezing them how to make a pie? Thank you it's very smart prep idea having crusts ready for use when we need to. Egnoying very much on your canal
I would just go ahead and put them in a pie pan, wax paper between, in a ziplock bag.
Thank you. Made pumpkin pie with it. Used half butter, 1/2 shortening. Using all butter next time to get rid of the shortening after taste. Need to cover crust edges for long bakes. It browns much faster than normal crust.
Thank you Rachel, such a great idea leading up to Christmas cooking 🌟♥️
I’m on day three and it smells delicious. Can’t wait for day ten.
I have a recipe for homemade pie crust that I love. It makes enough four 4 or 5 pies. I freeze it but I never thought of rolling it out and freezing it in parchment. 'lightbulb!' Now I can't wait until I need to make it again just so I can freeze it this way! Thanks!
I'm new to your channel, a couple days. I came over from Simple Living Alaska. You got me at the freezer being loaded. Making room and using what you have grown and preserved. I'm really interested in the amish friendship bread. Going to go back and watch that video. And I have a friend who would love it also. Thanks! I'm hooked now lol.

Been watching your channel for months now, thanks for sharing your recipes, am learning more food preserving & cooking. Have a good day!
I use my starter in my chocolate chip cookies!! It's awesome!! I love the pie crust idea!!
I use pioneer Women’s pie crust. . That is where I learned about all butter pie crust. Great minds think alike. Great video,
Winter is my favorite time to make home made bread, especially sour dough bread. Heating up the stove, baking bread, and eating warm bread on a cold winter day here in Michigan is just so relaxing. I made Amish Friendship bread several years ago, and haven't made it since. I should definitely give it a go again.
I might have to try the Pioneer Woman’s pie crust recipe. I have yet to make a decent pie crust. In my over 50 years of cooking it’s still my nemesis! 😂
I'm going to try the pancakes and this crust recipes. Thank you Rachel
Well gosh darn it Rachel.....now ya got me thinking I need to try this Amish friendship bread starter deal! I feel like I still haven't squared away the last of the canning and now I need to start something else...🫣
Hello from Guam! This is the 4th video of yours I have watched. I'm really enjoying your channel. Also the timing was fantastic a friend gave me an Amish Friendship Bread starter about 3 weeks ago. I made the initial loaf and gave away 2 and kept 2 now I have 2 big jars of starter going and I can't wait to try this in pie crust. I also loved your blue berry pancakes. Love seeing all the Fall nesting! We're about 80F year round here. I just picked a 50lb bunch of bananas on Sunday so I'm in the process of dehydrating, making monkey butter, and freezing. I'm inspired to see how the starter will work in banana bread. Thank you!!
I started my starter yesterday! Day 10 is Thanksgiving Eve, just in time to make pie crusts. Exciting!!

I’m going to make these! What a great short cut. I’ve got to get my starter started! Setting an alarm for myself to do it tomorrow 👍🏻 getting our first snow tonight and really feeling the season kicking in. Thank you for sharing 🤗☃️❄️🌨

Love that basement table. So handy.
I'm on day 6 🙌🏼 can't wait to try to bake with it😁
Yum. I’m ready
My family is absolutely loving your channel. I homeschool and we sit and watch your gardening and preserving videos a couple times a week, the kids refer to you as Ms. Rachel😊 We live in NE Indiana, so glad to find others gardening in a zone so close to us! Also, where did you get your flour canister?💗💗
Thanks for sharing Rachel I have never had this bread @ all., Pie Crust is so hard for me to do 11-15-2022♥️
Ok i was going to start mine on the day you posted the first video. But I did not have 1 large jar that was not in use. I just got my new jars today and will wash them and start my starter
Thanks for sharing! I currently have 2 sourdough starters, milk kefir & kombucha that I’m trying to keep alive & this looks so intriguing to get started with, too! Let us know how the pie crusts turn out; I’m sure they’ll be yummy with the homemade lard! Many blessings to your family 🤗💕🇨🇦

Hi Rachel ❤
I started mine yesterday. My yeast wouldn’t bloom so I had to wait to get to the store.
I need to go back to your initial Amish starter. I tried sourdough but it’s a ton of maintenance and my husband doesn’t really like sourdough bread.
I'm definitely making this one!! And I got a question for you. Where did you get that measuring spoon from? That's cool!!

Years ago I used to make the sweet Amish friendship bread, and I did so many flavors, but I got to where I had too much discard and not enough energy to keep baking. Do you continue to do the 10 day process after every use, or just feed once a week? Do you discard any? I would love to have it on hand anytime I want it, but with low maintenance and not have to keep up with what day I’m on…? I hope that made sense, lol.

You got me hooked on the amish bread starter. I've used it for many many things. It makes the best pizza dough that you shared with us. My question is.....Can it be used in "sour dough" recipes? I'd like to make some doughnuts but cannot find am AFB recipe for those.
Rachel, I'm dying to know about your floors.

I love your videos. I am coveting your measuring spoons. Where did you get them? Thank you for the inspiration.

Bless you! I am on day 3 and you mention using these crusts for chicken pot pie .....can you taste the sweetness....or will anyone ever think that the crust tastes different? Thank you my dear!

Does the egg go into the crust or is it to egg wash when baking? I missed that ingredient in your demonstration.

@@1870s ok. Thanks. I will make a note on my recipe card as "optional".
Can you use suet, from the kidney fat of a calf or cow? We had a 1-year old calf butchered and I asked for the kidney fat, the butchered called suet. I know you can put suet in Christmas pudding, a fabulous cake-like "pudding",my mom always made and put in a bid coffee can, covered with foil, and cooked in boiling water (water bath) in the oven, or on the stove top. It's then covered with a delicious buttery, vanilla sauce. I need to find out if she used the suet before cooking it down, to get any meat or impurities out of it! Does anyone know which way suet is used? Also, can you water bath can the boiled down suet, to make it shelf stable?
did you add the egg like the recipe said or did I miss that part of video somewhere ?
@1870s

I didn't I never add eggs to pie crust seems like an odd ingredient
What size glass jar does everyone keep their starter in?
Please update us all on how these pie crusts taste! We are on day 3 now...
So if you use on day 10 after the feeding, can you use it at the next feeding 5 days after or on the next day 10? Sorry if that's confusing
How long can the starter stay on counter, do you have to use it every ten days or freeze it
Do I add the egg that the recipe on the screen calls for?
Do you refrigerate the starter everyday when you are making it and storing it?
My dad freezes pie crusts as well but he bakes them first sometimes. Does it matter whether you bake it or not? Does it do anything to the flavor?
Can you make crackers with the starter?

no, I skipped that
You said that the starter was sweet enough but doesn’t it make savoury things like a quiche or chicken pot pie with sweetened pastry taste weird ? I’m from the U.K. so I would never think of making the above with sweetened dough I would just add sugar for a dessert pie and leave it out for a dinner pie. 🤷🏻♀️
I am not a pie crust maker I well just go to the store and buy one
Look at you in your bare feet! 😍
