Customer attempted a DIY repair on their 4TB Western Digital hard drive but unfortunately took every possible wrong turn during their repair attempt. From opening a drive that didn't need to be opened, to swapping out the PCB and losing track of the original ROM. We use PC3000 and some other tools to get the issue sorted out and get the customer's data recovered.

Damn, what a lucky recovery. My drive was WD40EZRZ (4 TB Blue), the heads have pretty much failed after a power flux, and the recovery lab said that the service sector was partially damaged. But luckily they got almost all the stuff recovered from it despite that, was much worse than a software/board problem.

System area corruption is pretty common when a there is any type of voltage irregularity to the heads. They just start writing garbage data, and before you know it, the translator is corrupted and the drive cannot be read. Sometimes the corruption is so severe that it takes a lot of effort and thinking outside the box to get back to a point where the sectors can be read again.

@@acsdata Yeah, when I called the lab they immediately told me to not power on the drive and get it to them as-is.
Love to see you guys back, making videos!!! Hope to see more videos, coming out soon, does Greg still work there or no? I know he used to do a lot of the videos.

This is Greg and I'm still here but I've pulled back from day to day operation. Malcolm and Dave have the spotlight on these new videos and they are both incredibly talented with way more experience in the data recovery industry than I have. We will have more videos coming up soon!
