Like a crewman that would get stuck during a warp core breach, the computer would decide: "1 life vs. the rest of the crew - expandable, lock" whilst a human would still try his / her best to get said crewman hella outta there.

Just a little detail, I only noticed just now... Picard addresses ALL of his crew as "Mister" or "Doctor" or "Commander" -- 'Mister LeForge', 'Mister Worf', 'Mister Data'... Even though he outranks them, and technically only needs to address them by their last name. It's striking how much respect he shows for all of them, regardless of station.

  • @phastinemoon

...Um, in the navy, they address each other by last names, only -- that's the standard requirement. The lower ranks address their commanding officers with titles, but the higher ranks (LPOs, Master Chief, etc) are only required to address their subordinates by last name (or just rank, especially if they're in trouble) What Picard does is most certainly NOT a navy thing.

Picard touching Data's shoulder at 00:19 is so sublime. Picard is usually not one to show and express his feelings directly to his crew, but that one small gesture is him saying thank you to Data and showing how proud of him he is. It's little, almost passable moments like that that make this series what it is.

+JackOfAllRAIDs i mean, he has emotions. he was written by people who can't really fathom an emotionless being and played by an actor who has emotions. he has smiled before! but, the idea is that he simply finds the good of humanity and his "friends" as logical, I suppose. He is on a quest to become more human, so fitting in and being productive in human society is productive towards that end.

+waldoman7 they kinda were all over the place in the first two seasons with Data, but they eventually established some ground rules. Despite that Data still ends up showing emotions, and it's not because of the actor, the writing required it. My theory has and always has been that Data has had emotions from the start. That it's in his subroutines, built in but lacking in proper function. That little processor emotion chip just processed the subroutines in a way that Data understand and express better.

Picard was so dead-tired, I imagine he either just stumbled to his bed and let himself fall on it, sleeping almost immediately, or decided to take a final sip of earl grey and just fell asleep on his sofa, cup still steaming on the table next to him :-) On the other hand, if any man has the discipline to still brush his teeth and change clothes before going to bed, no matter how tired, it would be Picard.

Something many leaders don't understand: when you're commanding good people, you often have to order them to take care of themselves or do things they'd like to do anyway. Competent people tend to discount their own needs and put duty first. Bad leaders tend to ride their people till they break, and then tell you the personnel were weak, lazy, or incompetent. I have seen comments from people complaining that the night crew should have taken over, but they miss the point of this episode. According to the doctor, everyone needs to dream to survive. No one human on the ship was able to sleep properly, therefore everyone on the ship was running on pure adrenaline with no proper REM sleep for an extended period of time. They all would have needed a full period of rest and REM sleep to fully recuperate from their physical and mental exhaustion. This would have included everyone on the night crew. Data has proven on multiple occasions that he is capable of monitoring every station on the ship by himself. As long as there were no emergencies, I see no problem with him doing so.

There's a reason Cmdr. Maddox wants to dissassemble this guy to figure out how to make more. Data is an invaluable asset to Starfleet, he could even achieve Dr. Daystrom's dream of no more need for human crews in Starfleet vessels. But if you get too enthusiastic remember -- Lore happened too.

If they could ever get the process down, Datas would increase at an exponential rate. 1 Data could create another Data, then those 2 create 2 more, then those 4 create 4 more, etc. If Star Trek were real, that would absolutely be the military's #1 priority. It'd make Starfleet one of the most powerful groups in the Galaxy, or totally annihilate them. And we all know that if the military has even a chance for absolute tactical supremacy over their rivals, they're going to give it a shot, regardless of the consequences (*cough A-Bomb cough*).

Acting Captain Data has a nice sound to it. Pretty cool seeing him issuing Picard an order too. I always thought this scene was neat. The other scene I always liked was the 1st season episode with the Binars when Data ordered "Abandon ship". I think that episode was really Data's first big command decision having to order "Abandon ship" without being able to consult the Captain.

This is like one of the few times anyone in Star Trek ever says "thank you" to somebody for doing something for them. I get they don't HAVE to thank people because they're "the leader" and people get put in the brig for not following orders, but still, it wouldn't kill them to say "thanks" ever now and then.

The reason is because Star Trek has always been written for television. That is where that show shined and excelled. Trying to make Trek blockbuster films competing with other films has always been a mistake. Yes there have been a couple good movies but Star Trek has always been best on the small screen.

One thing I've always loved about Star Trek is how the main crew would have someone within their ranks that had special powers or abilities that would come in use if ever needed, in Picard's situation they have data who is by extension more than able to captain and command a starship as well as sufficiently operate it faster than any of the personnel on the ship, gotta love that .

Not to worry! Data is still alive. Remember when Data gave B-4 all of his memories. Well B-4 eventually evolved to be Data again. He was slow at first and couldn't connect One thing to another but eventually, his nural net got more advanced and he became data again. It's in the new comic series how he later becomes the Captain of the enterprise.
