Data is taking it literally (Star Trek: TNG)

Ойын-сауық

Data misunderstands. (Star Trek: The Next Generation: "All Good Things...", final episode)
O'BRIEN: Looks like we'll all be burning the midnight oil on this one.
DATA: That would be inadvisable.
O'BRIEN: Excuse me?
DATA: If you attempt to ignite a petroleum product on this ship at zero hundred hours, you will activate the fire suppression system, which would seal off this entire compartment.

And he sounds like he's practically squaring off. "Excuse me?!" I would have assumed he was finishing a conversation with someone across the room. Otherwise, burning midnight oil=not advisable. Working late=not advisable. So make a joke about being forbidden and therefore excused from working late going forward, which would open a verbal can of worms if Data hears it lol

dumb writing though. Data has an almost limitless storage capacity and ability to interface directly with the computer, not even requiring a holodeck. If someone occasionally serves as acting commander a ranking commander might refer to them as commander if they have respect for the junior officer especially if they have already demonstrated good judgement under pressure and they are qualified to be a commander but need to rank up to 'officially' be a commander. Traditionally to be a commander of a vessel it's not written in stone to have a certain minimum rank. A LT could be put in command of a ship and go on a mission tho often they would be given a promotion to deal with the technicalities especially in time of war.

This is time travel at its best. Not a plot to save the universe from destruction, but the sheer magic of visiting a different era. You can see Picard enjoying this moment so much, and just marveling at how far Data has come. This moment, right here, is something that can never happen in reality. The closest we can come is watching old videos of ourselves or our friends. But we can never step back there and ~be~ in those moments again. Picard gets this extraordinary chance to do exactly that, and Stewart's acting here really captures the wonder Picard feels in that moment. And then, like a bubble floating on the spring air, Picard realizes that there's work to do, so he steps in and interrupts their conversation (and spares the good O'Brien further bafflement). The moment is passed. Q said that the moment when Data realized the paradox was the breakthrough moment, but I think this moment was more important, and more mind-expanding.

+randOmZ TV Not really. DS9s first season was the same time to TNGs 4th season (i think), so he did get his transfer much earlier than that. The TNG finale was Picard jumping through 3 different times, one of which was practically during the TNG pilot. I dont remember the finale replaying this scene though, but even if, that doesnt mean O'Brien stayed on the enterprise until season 7, he was long on DS9 by then. It was just some time travel.

randOmZ TV In fact they do reference Events from TNG. There is even 2 crossover episodes (the DS9 Pilot, and TNG Birthright). By the time the "big things" (like the Dominion war) happen on DS9, TNG had already ended pretty much. Also, Worf was pretty much transferred to DS9 right after the Events of Generations, which in turn is not much after the TNG finale itself. The Marquis arc also sort of crosses over in both series, being mentioned mostly in late TNG, while in DS9 its mostly dealt with in the early seasons only, which as I said is the same timespan in-universe.

randOmZ TV DS9 is definitely worth it, even though its a bit different than TNG. It has a lot more deep thought and with the dominion war it gets very dark by trek standards, but thats what makes it so enjoyable. Voyager is kinda meh, its TNG 2.0, except theyre stranded in the delta quadrant, which hardly plays a role, since half the episodes might as well have been TNG.

this is the kind of scene that was endearing when the show was new, but years later you realize it's a plot hole large enough to drive a truck through: Data is a Lt Cmdr, raising slowly through the ranks, as well as attended star fleet. He would already understand if not know every specific idiom. Also he's be able to access the etymology of the idiom on his own. It does remind of the original series when Kirk mentioned the past time of dipping girls ponytails into ink wells and Spock was quizzical. Of course back in the 60s, that was only a little bit of an old fashion reference but clearly in the future, doubtful there was even pens.

Khechari Disagree. You still say uppercase and lowercase characters. Those terms are from book printing when these characters were literally stored in the upper and lower cases. Want an even earlier reference? Potholes. Over a thousand years ago people dug up the earth for clay to make pots out of, that's where it comes from. Not idioms? Fine, but these are: clean slate, pot calling the kettle black, once in a blue moon, head in the clouds, know the ropes, show someone the ropes, all of these are several hundred (or even thousand) years old idioms. I find it easy to believe if these are still a thing, burning the midnight oil would be a thing too in just 400 years.

The weird ways they can communicate, what is negative/positive for them, can they think faster? do they know more? can they benefit? etc. People always categorizing other people, so much easier to sort people out like a file cabinet - but its never that easy. Those that can accept that take on the harder task of supressing their urges to classify and categorize. This is a big issue with man/woman, black/white. Easier to say "all white males" are bad, then saying "that one guy" is bad. wait... where am i?

@TheWeepingCorpse You have to watch it with the original commercials to get the correct feel for the times. It is important to watch the show through the "lense" in which it was origianally filtered through.

It was great seeing O'Brien run engineering here. He should have been made chief engineer of the ship. Though I think in the original timeline Picard did not know of O'Brien's full engineering abilities.

Data wasn't hooked up to google but I can see him telling this to people, well a few words of it before being cut off. What's the origin of the phrase 'Burning the midnight oil'? The first person known to have referred to 'the midnight oil' in print was the English author Francis Quarles wrote in Emblemes, 1635: Wee spend our mid-day sweat, or mid-night oyle; Wee tyre the night in thought; the day in toyle. At that time there was a verb for working late by candlelight - elucubrate. Henry Cockeram defined that in his The English dictionary, or an interpreter of hard English words, 1623: "Elucubrate, to doe a thing by candlelight." Clearly, we no longer have much call for that word and it has fallen out of use. Although it is probably some years since anyone needed to do it in reality the phrase 'burning the midnight oil' is still in everyday use. Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton released an album called The Right Combination/Burning the Midnight Oil, in 1972.

Today, elucubrate means "to work out or express by studious effort," according to Merriam-Webster.

The military courtesy of the Federation is interesting. There is no ten-hut, or salute. People just talk normally to each other. The rank is used to give orders, although position should have the same effect. Basically, they treat each other as professionals and respect each other's abilities. In the present military structure, that does not happen, as higher ranking officials may think they know more than lower ranking officials or NCOs, even if they do not dominate their areas of expertise.
