    I think it was a brilliant move for lore, who has emotions, to have been created before him. So data is not technologically limited to have emotions, but rather hindered artificially by his creator. He can develop and show basic emotions like compassion and curiosity. We also don’t know where his limits are. They could stretch far beyond what we always see. The way he was written allows for an outsider perspective on humanity while being himself human enough for us to care.

You seem to use the strictest version of free will. Then I'll rephase it. Data has free choice. He can in fact act like a monkey for the rest of his existence, he just wouldn't find it productive or intriguing enough. As for my attraction to genders, even if I'm attracted to someone, I can choose to walk away and ignore them. This is what I meant on free will, but maybe free choice is a better term. Except of course in the case of certain mental illnesses, but that's a derailment from the original subject.

    I always felt that data had emotions, but with the limitations of his positronic brain, he could not fully develop them or sense them fully. This is proven by the fact that Data showed compassion and empathy in this instance. Yet he could not express stronger feelings like well-defined happiness or sadness. To compare, Data is almost like a blind person. Blind people can sense the warmth of light on their face, and can sometimes see streaks of color in dreams. Because sometimes visually impaired people cannot fully understand color, they get a sense by "mentally observing" the literal and figurative descriptions provided by those around them.

  • @Kageryushin

    Eh, not precisely. He says it outright: "I do not possess the ability to experience emotions *as humans do.*" The brains of living beings are, in a sense, biological computers so incredibly advanced that the processes of our thoughts, feelings, and memories are obfuscated even from ourselves, as the nature of our personal identities are so innate that we hardly ever question them. It's all something we don't really control; it _is_ something that Data decides for himself, however. By comparison, Data's artificial mind is capable of simulating emotion in a capacity parallel to a sapient being, but it is just that - a simulation or a simulacrum of emotion. Throughout the show, Data is learning to better understand and thus mimic emotion and, furthermore, his artificial intelligence expresses that gaining this comprehension and mastery is one of its primary prerogatives - in other words, Data _wants_ it. But then, he was *programmed* to want it and to do what he does. The idea being expressed is thus: an AI "going through the motions" of expressing feelings and ideals as its program dictates, developing procedures for how to "properly" perform the behavior of the living beings around it, is arguably not a real person, it is just an inanimate object that is very good at imitating living beings. Given that, however, at what point of advancement does Data stop being just a simulacrum and, despite being artificial, become intrinsically identifiable as his own sapient being regardless of how he processes emotion? I think there's a lot of room for debate, but I'd imagine many Trekkies think Data passed that point a long time ago.

    Even without a chip, Data does have emotions. Not quite like people do, but lets say someone says something hateful it prompts a certain bit of his programming and so on. He knows, on what we would call a subconscious level, that he feels a certain way about things. If he didn't even his programming wouldn't give him the moral compass he has.

  • @GregaMeglic

    @GregaMeglic

    7 жыл бұрын

    Not quite. His brain tells him how a human would act in that case. Emotions are what is felt, Data on the other hand doesnt feel anything, but that doesnt mean he lacks values. He simply picks the action that would fit in with his values. And respecting the emotions of other people is part of his values. But his actions themselves are not prompted by emotion, but by logic. In a sense he is more Vulcan than the Vulcans.

    I think Data has a reasonable claim to greatest character in all of science fiction. He's an exemplar of what's best and most core to the genre, and Brent Spiner had the heart and vision to elevate this potentially campy role into some of the most extraordinary character acting in history. The golden thread through the wasteland of TNG's writing was the crew's implicit, unpatronizing trust in Data and their totally open & vulnerable love for him. He brings out the best human qualities. Picard's recognition of this is, to me, the central and most compelling element of the Picard character. I'm really glad they made this central to the new series.

    I think that Data’s speed and strength, along with hand phaser destructive potential, were some of the most conveniently forgotten aspects of the Trek series. Convenient in the sense that writers neglected to take them into consideration at times for the sake of dramatic purpose, instead of being consistent.

    Limited by the computer hardware like we are today. Thousands of people experience it everyday. They click and type and swipe faster than the computer program can handle. I think he only ever moved his hands at this speed (maybe his upper body to dodge) but never walked fast, for obvious reasons. Can't have a 100mph robot zooming around the corridors. And he is tasked to aid with calculations and data-based strategic assessment on that ship, not manual tasks to replace regular crew members
