congrats on your 100K subs. You deserve it!! One thing I've known about data recovery for a long time is after an accidental format do not use the device for new files. The more files you place on it the likelihood that the old files will be gone. The same thing is true for accidental deletes.

Another well edited video clear and consise as always, it's also great to see you explain briefs on the software aspect of data recovery as many channels simply just say "oh we retrieved the data after the pbysical work" but do not show not even a brief of the process. Well done and keep up the good content

While I personally wouldn't want to do that restoration myself, it's good to learn that a card that was securely erased still has chances of recovery by accessing the NAND directly.

This also happens to older sony Camera. My Sony a6000 with ~2014 firmware is also format the card this way (zeroing all sectors/ TRIM). And probably my 2009 Sony a290 also does this way. Actually, I use my camera often to format my SD card before I use it to other device; I want to make the sectors TRIM-ed to make sure pristine performance. Raspberry Pi fstrim command also can does this too.

Yep, Sony's do that. They do it quick so not actual erase. Good to see someone finally confirm it can be recovered, this is excellent. Did you get all NEF's, no fragmentation?

ARW - even larger RAW than NEF. I got most out, there was a handful of beat one likely due to 10 pictures taken after format.

I have a mini SD that works, but it does not accept writes anymore. It can be read. It is not possible to format this card on any device. It says it has been done, but afterwards the old data is still on the card. Tried several programs and cleared the read only rights, but nothing will work!

So what's the working theory on how this is happening then? The camera is issuing some sort of secure erase command to the nand controller to wipe out its knowledge of the blocks? And if so, why? Surely it's better to quick format the card - unless Sony are doing this to effectively trim the card so performance and reliability is higher over time?

Yes, but on SSD data on NAND often is encrypted, and controllers function is far more complex to replicate

@@christiaanvanderwalt9838 hi there. No unfortunately not. The quotes I got were in the region of R6000 for them to attempt it and the photos were of birds I had seen so I can pay another trip to go see them again

happened to me once, when inserting a memory card coming from a PAL sony a7ii to an a6300 NTSC camera, you'll accidentally hit yes on the first popup prompting the card needs to be formatted for NTSC use, not even the best of consumer friendly software can recover it.

Yes, that's what the video is about. There are some cards that use LDPC ECC and dynamic XORs that are not recoverable if formatted by Sony Alpha

possible, but result is not going to be as good as recovery for images due to video file fragmentation. A lot more manual work if videos need to be pulled

yes, most card can be recovered as long as it is not Dynamic XOR or LDPC error correction

Absolutely not. Software can only access logical image. Logical image according to this device is 0ed out as per translator. Only physical image contains old data, but there is no software that will give you access to the physical image without NAND protocol access

That means if you format Sony ALPHA 7S III SD card 256GB in camera after recording around 160GB of footage and after that you record over 150GB more, your chances are 0 to bring back data before format?

same thing, it's not model that makes format special, its the Sony brand approach. Any Sony Alpha camera formats this way, so the recovery can only be obtain this way

it will come down to the type of card you have. This type of recovery works with BCH type cards only. There are a lot of LDPC types these days. Chipoff does not work for LDPC. Sandisk cards over 100mb/s are almost always LDPC

I just used disk drill, it is able to retrieve the files, mp4 but i'm unable to preview them. The thumbnails for the videos works fine thou.

Little complicated but it is possible, bcoz i did it several time. But unfortunately in most case you cant save your data, but the flash disk itself can be usable again. It is depend the UMPtool (usb mass production) need to clean format or not. You need usb VID and PID of your flashdrive, then you find suitable MPtool for your flashdrive. You can view your vid and pid with chipgenius (windows app) Just follow the instruction in the last line of chip genius.

Usually those types of format take a while, trim format will also show 0000s in sectors but it will only take seconds

where I work they write 0's to the device followed by 1's. They do this 7 times. I have no idea how long it takes. After that the device is taken to an industrial shredder. So on top of the fact that data recovery is probably impossible even after the first pass they still do it more times and then proceed to destroy it anyway. lol

that's very stupid sony does this.

I did the same a yesterday. None of the Recovery software's worked to recover files from the Sandisk 128gb file formatted by Sony A7 R3. I sent a message through HDD Recovery Services portal. I realized some of the recovery services are expensive. I am not sure how involved and time consuming it is to recover the images. Its these are just a fun travel pictures I don't want to spend a lot of money to recover the files unless it is reasonable.
