YOUR DATA
Your name, your age, your height, your weight, where you live, where you work, your family, your friends, your likes, your dislikes, your phone number, your email, your health conditions, your buying habits, your credit score, your political beliefs, your religious beliefs, who you text…
These are all examples of ‘data points’. And these pieces of data are very valuable things.
WHERE IS PERSONAL DATA SOURCED?
In order to source this information, begin by scraping data from public records. Things like: social media pages, property records, court records, birth certificates, voter registration information, bankruptcy records.
Then go ahead and purchase data from OTHER companies. That’s right: other companies that have your data can make an extra stream of revenue for themselves by selling the information they have on their customers.
Create “free” websites and services, that collect data from your users. Put ‘trackers’ on these websites/services that detect a user’s location, their contact list, their photos, etc.
CREATING PROFILES FROM OUR DATA
Finally, once we’ve gathered all this data, we can begin to create ‘profiles’ of individuals. This can detail an individual’s behaviour/personality when it comes to their buying habits, their likes/dislikes, their political affiliations, their health concerns, etc.
Once we have created these profiles… it’s time to sell!
SELLING THE DATA
You can sell this information to… pretty much whoever wants it.
The most common customers that data brokers have at the moment are marketing companies. If a gym had a list of individuals who were interested in getting fit, that would be a very valuable audience for them to target with their advertisements.
But you can also sell this data to health insurance companies, banks, ‘people search’ websites, governments, and other data brokers.
THE DILEMMA
Although it sounds quite sinister, this industry does pose a dilemma: if a many of the free websites and apps that you use require your data in order to stay profitable - is it really such a problem? If it’s just being used for marketing purposes, is there a big consequence to that?
This is a current argument that is going on in the industry at the moment, and it’s one that I have struggled with getting to grips with as well. One thing that I do believe strongly is that the way in which your data is managed should be regulated fare more than it currently is.

It is genuinely difficult to be an entrepreneur these days and not have your data all over the internet. Since marketing is primarily online, and people want to buy from people, you can’t really be online and not be discoverable and noticeable. Using a VPN is great for protecting the connection to sites, but that doesn’t change what the bank knows about me, what Amazon knows about me, etc. Anonymity is very difficult. So I think the next best thing is to become aware of what I’ve probably put out there and how others might take advantage of it, and then be on guard for that. It’s ok to be known, it’s not ok to be taken advantage of, or to take advantage of others. Just my initial thoughts...still thinking this through. Thanks, James!

This makes me think about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They use data and algorithms to identify anyone who could be a threat to their rise to power, and anyone who would dissent while under their control. They add these people to a list and eliminate them. I believe someone has a list like that, and I bet I'm on it...

Fortunately I do not have a cell phone, I have never made an online purchase or payment. I still use money to pay for what I need…in stores in person. I receive no customer loyalty points or air miles. I do not have social media accounts (other than KZread). I rarely search the internet, but when I do, I am succinct and precise in my search terms, and I use different search engines. I drop cookies regularly, and always search both sides of a subject. If something is important I will communicate directly by my landline phone. I have no doubt that they know something about me…but not what they would like. @@Cerehum She knows exactly how hackers can access your information without you knowing. All they need is your name and they can find out everything about you. We tried it on a friend of ours, and manage to get everything about him except their social security number. Her advice would be limit the websites you use and give access to your information. The more websites you allow to access your information, the higher risk you put yourself in. Her advice is limit the sites you use, only use the ones your sure your comfortable with.

In Canada, we have laws that are supposed to protect us with regard to the collection, use and disclosure of personal information. Wow interesting! I feel like we live in a world where people just clicks on “accept” to privacy settings without really thinking about what we’re actually giving up. I think it’s problematic when “data brokers” USE our information to make money, then it is a huge issue that needs to be addressed. There has to be some sort of protection on behave of the consumer.

The tos aren't even meant to be read. I mean they take 3 sentences and make it 10 pages with 90% of the words being nonsense. It looks like a kid who has to get a certain amount of words for their essay so they just prolong it with a bunch of big hard to understand words. The words are also usually very tiny and practically impossible to read.

Why is this a problem, i have known this for a while and despite that still just click accept when it comes to cookies. I'm not hiding anything and this might help me discover a product i wouldn't have found otherwise and really enjoy or find useful. I get that the way its done is shady as shit but in reality this doesn't hurt you and this isn't something being stolen, no company ever is going to pay you directly for your info and if they would the amount would be pennies if that much so what is the problem?

When I heard you say near the beginning of the video, _"I want a piece of that pie,"_ I was sorely tempted to unsubscribe. Large scale privacy demolition may be an 'already happening' thing, but to participate in such a significant erosion of privacy purely for financial gain implies a disturbing deficit in character re: mutual consideration & respect. I'm glad you're still on the fence, at least at the time this video was posted, and I hope you decide in favor of privacy concerns. While I find your content quite useful in terms of financial strategy, I'm still evaluating your sense of ethics. In any case, thank you for your time and effort here. Cheers!

interesting reactions from viewers. most appreciated the content, some, the quality editing and how they see this channel to have millions of sub, but only a very few talked about how serious the situation is. we're entering the age where everyone is going to have no privacy anymore. heck, a company could literally build an AI based on you, your alternate/digital you. another "you" that could challenge your identity as a person. another you that was known online differently than who you actually are as a person. we shrug it off now because yeah why care if you're not doing anything wrong but if this goes out of hand then humans can fuck itself off and AIs will become the humans of the future.
