Das Tillylied - Thirty Years' War Song
The Tillylied - or "Tilly Song" was written in the aftermath of the Siege of Magdeburg, and became quite popular with the forces of the Catholic League, led by Johann Tserclaes, the Count of Tilly, the "Iron Monk".
The Thirty Years War was a long-lasting clash of mainly Catholic and Protestant forces that struggled for the status of religion within the Holy Roman Empire. It later involved other forces that tried to exploit the political instability for their own gains, such as France, Sweden, Russia and the Ottoman Empire helping the Protestants.
A popular motto spread in the Protestant side, both in the context of Turkish support and in the conquest of Turkish expansion: "Better Turkish than Papist", coincidentally similar to the Orthodox motto "Rather the Turkish Turban than the Papal Tiara".
The War eventually ended in a stalemate, with both forces not willing to drag it on for longer, and with religious peace being declared in the Holy Roman Empire.

From Spain, I always liked Bavaria. With the Spanish Habsburgs the Bavarians were a strong ally at Europe. Even before the Spanish war of succession, with our king Charles II heirless due to health issues, the heir of the Spanish Empire was gonna be Joseph-Ferdinand of Baviera, a member of the house of Wittelsbach, he was confirmed as prince of Asturias but he passed away at a young age. And also during the bourbon dinasty, Charles III of Spain repoblated the south of Spain with Catholic Bavarians.

Simultaneously the most violent pre-industrial war in history, with innumerable casualties both military and civilian; yet also a time of great cultural vitality and, for lack of a better word, cheerfulness, found in the songs and paintings of the time. Truly fascinating and underrated era.

This conflict was severe and it's political and religious grounds most complicated. It knew only losers in the end. Germany wasted no matter wether catholic, protestant or calvinist. Millions dead on either side, most of them civilians. In the second half of the war it was german forces - catholic and protestant together - against french forces. The war could - and should - have ended several times but someone always went on.
