Herr Mannelig - Garmarna

Sorry for the absence, work and studying really takes a toll.
This one is a Swedish ballad first written down in the 1850s, and tells the story of a young squire who is tempted by a troll.
It's also implied that the troll is actually a pagan woman, and that the song symbolizes a young Christian man resisting material gain that would come with apostasy.
Note 1: Palfreys are luxury horses used for riding.
Note 2: The "Knuckers" are the closest I could come to the "Neckers" of the original. The Neckers, or Nixies, were Germanic water spirits that would lure passerbys and drown them. A similar spirit existed in Northumbrian folklore by the name of Knucker.

Lyrics:
1. Bittida en morgon innan solen upprann
Innan fåglarna började sjunga
Bergatrollet friade till fager ungersven
Hon hade en falskeliger tunga
Herr Mannelig Herr Mannelig trolofven i mig
För det jag bjuder så gärna
I kunnen väl svara endast ja eller nej
Om i viljen eller ej
2. Eder vill jag gifva de gångare tolf
Som gå uti rosendelunde
Aldrig har det varit någon sadel uppå dem
Ej heller betsel uti munnen
Herr Mannelig Herr Mannelig trolofven i mig
För det jag bjuder så gärna
I kunnen väl svara endast ja eller nej
Om i viljen eller ej
3. Eder vill jag gifva de qvarnarna tolf
Som stå mellan Tillö och Ternö
Stenarna de äro af rödaste gull
Och hjulen silfverbeslagna
Herr Mannelig Herr Mannelig trolofven i mig
För det jag bjuder så gärna
I kunnen väl svara endast ja eller nej
Om i viljen eller ej
4. Eder vill jag gifva ett förgyllande svärd
Som klingar utaf femton guldringar
Och strida huru i strida vill
Stridsplatsen skolen i väl vinna
Herr Mannelig Herr Mannelig trolofven i mig
För det jag bjuder så gärna
I kunnen väl svara endast ja eller nej
Om i viljen eller ej
5. Eder vill jag gifva en skjorta så ny
Den bästa i lysten att slita
Inte är hon sömnad av nål eller trå
Men virkat av silket det hvita
Herr Mannelig Herr Mannelig trolofven i mig
För det jag bjuder så gärna
I kunnen väl svara endast ja eller nej
Om i viljen eller ej
6. Sådana gåfvor jag toge väl emot
Om du vore en kristelig qvinna
Men nu så är du det värsta bergatroll
Af Neckens och djävulens stämma
Herr Mannelig Herr Mannelig trolofven i mig
För det jag bjuder så gärna
I kunnen väl svara endast ja eller nej
Om i viljen eller ej
7. Bergatrollet ut på dörren sprang
Hon rister och jämrar sig svåra
Hade jag fått den fager ungersven
Så hade jag mistat min plåga

As a Swedish speaker, i noticed there are some wrong meaning. 1.För det jag bjuder så gärna doesnt mean (for that I would gladly offer you gifts) it would be more accurate " because i want to offer you very gladly."There are no gifts mentioned in that sentence. She says that she REALLY REALLY wants to offer him to marry her. 2. Som klingar utaf femton guldringar doesnt mean that it" sounds like fifteen gold rings" it is made of fifteen gold rings so "klingar" which is referred to when keys make noise so when sword hits the floor it makes that noise. It doesnt sound like fifteen gold rings, it is MADE out of 15 gold rings. 3. "Her mouth full of lies" this sentence i would say could be correctly translated. But if we translated it exactly like it is written (hon hade en falskeliger tunga) it would be "she had a false tongue". But it could be translated into mouth full of lies.

loved this folk song, especially this rendition. but not sure how to interpret it. the first half of the song paints the troll a deceitful. untrustworthy, figure and reinforces that by how the knight rejects her. but when the troll cries out she said "her plight would be over" as if he had loved her she would not be foul and deceitful. Is she a demonic monster trying to lead the knight to peril or repentant and wishing to be loved?

About the "end her plight" I'm not sure about that but my guess is it is probably a reference of her avoiding misery

Just to add a little nuance, for those of you who can't understand Swedish: When the troll-woman runs away at the end crying, a more literal translation of what she says is that if she had been able to get the young man, she would have been able to avoid her (future) torment; this suggests that she understands that eternal punishment awaits her, but she thought that she could avoid it by seducing and marrying a Christian man---which is not really how it works, but you can't blame her for trying, I guess!

I think the thing is, trolls are believed to have no souls, as they are not human, so they wouldn't have eternal torment but eternal nothingness after death, but by marrying a human they could gain a soul and have eternal life. Unfortunately they try to do this through deception and bribery rather than a genuine desire to love or repent. They don't have eternal souls like humans, after all, only an earthly mind. They are more like very intelligent animals in that regard.

The song is simply amazing. Just the sound or rather the "feeling" of words is a pure pleasure (but maybe it's just an exotic of it for someone who comes from the family of slavic languages). Anyway, I remember that when I heard it for the first time I was really concerned if it's some pagan song that could be dangerous for the soul. But when I read the text I liked it even more. But for me the main melody, will be always an "Old Camp" from Gothic 1...

@@luizumhumano7111 in my opinion it's not a sin per se, but it comes with some danger. Especially if it's not just some neutral music but created by someone with different faith (for example Bach) but music created for religious purposes. The most obvious example is satanist music which was created to worship demons. But I think there is a lot of danger in pagan music too. Also the protestant songs brings a lot of danger but in a different way. They seem to worship the God but they can also mix truth with some minor lies. So, as I said it's not a sin but we should keep in mind that everything we listen to, watch, read etc. has some influence on us and in long term can lead us to false.

Scandinavia an incredible land full of stories that one can only think that they belong to fairy tales or legends of ancient times that only the hyperboria could have ever been told in said lands. Therefore, they became brave men and women who, seeking to escape the decline of their world, Ragnarok, which not even their gods, forces of nature incarnate could. They looked for a new future in the seas mounted on their dragons they explored all the world that they could. But as warriors and pirates they plundered lands which would without thinking give them a new future. There they found yet a new god which was one and three at the same time, a god who defeated death and who was not a tribal god that was worshiped by countless peoples such as the Byzantine heirs of the Hellenic tradition, the Welsh heirs of the mythical adventures of King Arthur, the Gaelics who were the only ones worthy of the land of Eire after facing and seeing the constant invaders who wanted it or their distant cousins who embraced this new god who achieved feats that not even Thor achieved even in his cusp then history would change forever to see the clash of two worlds forever.
