They behave like real shotguns unlike most other games. Most shotguns are lethal out to 100+ ft/ 30+ m.

One thing ive always liked about warhammer rpgs and video games is the shotguns behave like real shotguns, honestly kinda rare

I agree that bleed on the lawbringer shell would help a lot with the utility and make its gimmick more fun. plus some synergy with zealot builds.

Clearly a victim of FS taking off core weapon functionalities of weapons and loading them onto blessings instead. Deflector, Flechette, I'm sure at one point in development you could equip a shell that did something neat

Considering that the shot pattern changes when you scope in, I don't understand why the spread shot can't just be a fire mode.
A fellow shotgun connoisseur. Nice video, lots of good information here. Agree that they'd be top tier if it wasn't for their ammo and reload animation restrictions, the Agripinaa VII especially feels insane on the Veteran in terms of killing power. Maybe we will get a blessing to address this one day.
Basically what the three shotguns are in lore: (all three are said to be wielded by the Arbites in the description text, but in truth the other two actually have other origins) - The Lawbringer is basically a standard Arbites Shotgun and very common, on table top these things are rubbish but cost no points to equip. - The Agripinaa is the current Shotgun issued by the Imperial Guard (not described as such but is so on the miniatures kits). - The Kantrael is actually based on the Space Marine Assault Shotgun. From what I can tell, it appears to be a less powerful miniature version of that Shotgun but maintains a similar level of armour piecing power, it also fires Inferno Shot. The Kantrael is exclusive to Darktide, it doesn't exist anywhere else. It does resemble to some degree two of the older Preacher Shotgun miniature's shotguns, so it may be based on those models. Very certain it was originally intended to be the ranged weapon of choice for the Zealot and seems geared towards that too as the Zealot passive tree works better with it than the Veteran, I'd argue the same is the case with the Lawbringer too. BTW The Shotgun in the game Boltgun is *not* a Space Marine Assault Shotgun, it is in fact a Deathwatch Shotgun, very different. The Deathwatch Shotgun is a nasty piece of work because it fires big nasty custom cartages such as acid darts etc, however the standard one it uses (which is the one you use in the game) launches a spread of mini-bolt darts that are armour piecing and explode, so it is kind of like to a Boltgun as an LBX is to an Autocannon. The recent changes to the passive trees and the subsequent patches have resulted in Shotguns being relatively balanced now. The Kantrael is no longer OP with an unlimited range collision ignoring inferno shot; But still is a great ranged alternative to a flamer and the Zealot tree really ramps up it's Inferno Shot burn damage. Also the changes to the passives means that Lawbringer no longer sucks on Veteran, you can use passives for stagger to really make use of it's staggering ability as a form of crowd control now, which is the intended purpose of the weapon. As for Agripinaa, you can build a Veteran to use it as a ranged version of the Power Maul to blast the shield away from the corrupted Ogryns, which was it's original purpose too, an absolute must bring weapon for higher difficulties if your team comp is all ranged and you don't have an Ogryn melee tank.

Full Bore has been fixed, and you can no longer shoot through walls with the Kantrael. I forgot a couple of things. Shotguns can push back leaping bursters (not recommended) You regain stamina while getting shot/taking damage, so duck and dive is made doubly useless by that fact, since Unwavering Focus effectively lets you do the same thing but without the need to dodge, while making you nearly immortal.

The base shotguns special shell is a CC , its excellent at stunning specials. i always load the special shell when i hear a special coming, its perfect for nailing them and staggering, then unloading a couple regular rounds into their head.

by the time you've loaded and fired the special shell you could have shot twice, dealing more stagger and likely killing the target
That's really useful to know, I never knew there was so much hidden info across these weapons. Since using it I've found it really hard to change out from the Agripinaa Shotgun now, it's so fun and versatile and the Slug shot is just so useful.

The Agripinaa helped me get the no-hit penance and the 100% penance as well. A nifty little multi-tool good for taking out priority targets and stunning damage sponges for your allies.

On top of the Kantrael burn shooting through stuff, the burn tiks proc headtaker. shoot 2 fire shells at a mixed horde, swap to a head taker 4 Hvy swd for +75% more damage ticks and 90% of it will be dead before they get to you.

Oh yeah, another of those funny interactions is chucking a stun nade and swapping to your autopistol, you'll get max pinning fire stacks permanently up

I like the Kantrael cause it's such a good way to build up crit chance. Yes, I'm _absolutely_ proc'ing scattershot this time.

As a Zelo I found that clip rlly helpful. I use Kantrael with on respite and hit& run but I will tests other conbo perks
It should be noted that the fire dot of the kantrael is affected by no respite.
I love the kantrael on my zealot with terrifying barrage I can take out elites and specials with ease, and can quickly eliminate a target forcing the others to take coverm opening up the options of retreating or closing the gap to go ham with melee, It came with deathespitter I'm not too fussed as I'm not killing droves of shooters but it is exceptional at giving my zealot breathing room in tense situations without the need of using a grenade, terrifying barrage is a potentially overlooked perk that gives your team and zealot support and should be considered as a zealot over damage feats

Fulling loading a shotgun is probably my least favorite thing about it. It's got to be one of the longest reloads for a gun.

They're terribly underpowered atm, I hope they do Big ammo buff and reload speed increase and we should be good, as well as damage rampup up close and generally higher damage so they shine outside of counterfire
I appreciate the effort it takes digging through the games code to figure out how the weapon systems work but frustrating beyond belief that you need to. Come on dev's.

Especially when you have a weapon inspect function, but it still doesn't tell you anything about hidden mechanics like minimum pellet count or body/limb/head priority for melee
The base shotguns special shell is actually really useful against crowds, the wide spread can mow down a few rows of chaff and the increased stagger ensures that those that do survive will be stopped in their track or even knocked down.

indeed, whole point of the shotgun is you can top-up on the move and always have it loaded. also NEEDS to put down enemies with a single shot, that is part of it's original (real-world) military purpose--to quickly neutralize multiple defenders of an enemy trench with some element of surprise. Applied to the vidya gaem here, it should probably reliably put down the various gunners/guys with rifles shooting at you with a single round.

Kantrael burn damage nerf against flak came just in time for this video. JK, it will be fine. Just annoying how all sources of burn were given a nerf because FS didn't know how else to nerf the flamer. Also, once Kantrael infinite pierce is actually fixed, I wonder how useful the alt fire will really be.

Assuming it retains some pierce, probably just fine. Fire nerfs are a little strange, and ironically probably don't affect the flamer that much. Gotta update the gun psyker guide lol

@@telopots Yeah, I've been joking about how in a patch meant to nerf both Vet and Preacher. Psyker got the biggest nerf. I don't think the thought even entered anyone at Fatshark's mind about how the burn nerf would affect anything else. Infernus and soulblaze blessings were obviously too OP.

Running this in 4k, dlss performance, no ray tracing. High textures, mid AO, high light quality, mid volumetric fog, no DoF, high global illumination, bloom, sub surface scattering and motion blur off, mid screen space reflections, lens quality all off
Agripina is so damm fun. Special ammo makes it feel like a bolt action.

I feel like the kantrel fire pellet isnt infin pen like before. Yesterday i wasnt seeing the whole horde catch fire like usual

Very close, about 5m, it was just meant to demonstrate the different patterns vs how good they stay at range. Lawbringer and Pinaa retain their tight spread very well over longer ranges though
Happy we discovered the same build and got the same blast out of the same barrel.

I still don't understand how to use the dragon's breath attack at all. Its NOT a flamer, you can't lay down sustained coverage but a quick slap of flame, so you hit the 3 or 4 clumped together and they usually don't die before they're upon you anyway. The times you're faced with a long hallway full of enemies is rarer then I'd like when I'm using this gun.

@@Acesahn weapons you hold give the damage bonus to dots, yes, but you gotta keep the shotgun in your hands
Try deathspitter paired with fire frenzy. One-shotting mutants, maulers, reapers and everything that is not pure carapace is pretty lit.
What mod are you using that make teammates glow like that

I still don't see any reason to use a shotgun as vet, when I can use a autoshred pistol, MG XII or Boltgun. With the zealot on the other side it's very interesting because it synergies with his hyper mobility.

There isn't a reason to use it on anyone right now, it's too underpowered. It needs both a damage buff and an ammo buff, as well as some close range damage rampup. It doesn't actually synergize with zealot at all since shotguns don't benefit (ironically) that much from being up close, and benefit much more from volley fire. As you said, you can just whip out a shredder and do 10x the work with an instant pullout time and better mobility.

@@telopots "doesn't actually synergize with zealot" Sry, I don't see what you mean. With the zealot and an Agripinaa shotgun you have really fast special clear and cc at close range. If you need to boost dmg you can use your ult to do so. The shred pistol is OP atm, of course, but it's weakness is range. With the Agripinaa slug shot you have that range. The Kantrael has the incredible fire piercing which can ignite a whole corridor but lacks in range. So I still think shotgun is a nice pick for the zealot.

@@Charlys787 I guess I should have rephrased that, I meant that zealot doesn't really get anything unique to him that vet doesn't. The slug is nice, rest of the weapon not so much, and the kantrael's fire shot is completely broken atm. I still would rather use BAG/Shredder on zealot, especially with the shallow ammo pool of shotguns atm
So as of 2024 have they fixed fullbore yet?

Very nice and informative video, but I cant stop thinking that any shotgun is just a poor version of the boltgun. Less sustained damage, less burst damage, less armor penetrarion...there isnt a single reason to pick them over bolter un T5 high other than their abusive bugs

They're actually very fun to play with, and I think there are way enough ammo if you use them on a zealot. A bolter takes ages to equip while you can quickly equip your shotgun, kill an annoying ennemy out of range then go back to your melee weapon.
what the hek ? One after the other is 30% reload speed and tac reload is 20% but for agripina you reload faster with tac r than OATO.... this game !

This made me think I did something wrong and spend 10 minutes fiddling aorund cause I thought I had the wrong clips But no, Agri shotgun is the only weapon in the entire game that can reload for so long that the One After Another buff becomes less efficient than Tac Reload (which does not have a duration ofc). When you start a reload, it consumes the buff over 5 second.
how you can activate a bot in the bot lobby?! and how u got a monster?! i steel don't have it? there a button or what?! lol

Oh boy, the reason you don't like the special round for the Lawbringer is because you're using it wrong and demonstrating it against completely the wrong targets. The Lawbringer's special is a "duckbill" round, a fan of pellets significantly wider than the normal shot but much flatter, with extra penetration. Because of the "minimum pellets" mechanic you mentioned, it's an absolute MONSTER at horde clear: basic infected and poxwalkers get cut in half by it and it cuts deep enough that you'll push the front edge of the horde back with successive shots despite the load time.

But it's really not good at horde clear either. Actually try and fire it at poxies in the meat grinder, even using deadshot + manstopper it's horribly inefficient. If it chunked a dozen poxies in one shot (without gimping one blessing, which on lawbringer is a big deal) it could potentially enter the realm of usefulness, but it's got horrible damage distribution, even on crit, and fails to kill a single poxie in one shot. It also barely penetrates outside of Manstopper proccing. It fares better against groaners, but you still don't ever want to be wasting precious shotgun ammo on the horde. You have some of the worst ammo economy in the game and will run out just shooting what you should be shooting. Hence why I want it to have a purpose other than shooting groaners, because it's not a valuable thing for a ranged weapon to do, especially one with such limited ammunition.

@@telopots oh, I'm not claiming it's a primary horde clearer. Compared to a flamer, purgatus, brutal momentum axe or heavy stubber it's decidedly second-fiddle. But it's good enough to round out the shotgun's abilities and make it CAPABLE of horde clear as a useful bonus alongside the gun's primary functions.

I love the shotgun but cannot stand the difference in spread between hip and ADS. They need to be the same.

@@telopots Indeed. it is fun using mechanic's against a game that at times kneecaps you with an overwhelming amount of enemies. In a PVE game no less. It hurts no one to leave it in. If you have a problem with it? Then use a different weapon albeit a worse one if you want a challenge.

@@hakuzoable Don't blame me if and when this gets fixed, it's been reported since the day the patch hit. Don't call it a mechanic, it's a clear oversight by FS. It makes the game feel even more unfinished than it already does and trivializes the entire experience, which makes the game less fun for anyone who has to play with this weapon in the lobby. Remember, when you're cheesing you're having fun at the expense of everyone else in your game.

@@telopots If I'm cheesing it and everyone else has already been downed in the game. Yet I'm still surviving that's an automatic win dude. If you want your game to be harder overall go ahead and choose a worse weapon then. Though it is sad that someone reported this already, I still can really understand how a mechanic that contributes to a successful mission could be a detriment to someones ability to have fun during a mission.

@@hakuzoable The very notion of an "automatic win" is revolting lol Yes of course it makes the game less fun, you're automatically killing everything before anybody gets to do anything. The entire horde, everything in it, every patrol aggroed or not, is going to be dead before any other player gets to do anything. It's the most egregiously game breaking thing in the game atm, and I'm glad you admitted it was a win button. You sound like the type of dude who cried when SotT was reworked and actually became interesting
