I think 5e is just sorely in need of a "hardcore" setting, where the difficulty is more set like it tended to be in the old days. Dark Suns would be good for that. And no, the newer generally more heroic/less dangerous campaigns are not bad, I just tend not to prefer them.

Athas was a closed plane of existence, but Dregoth re-opened its access with a Planar Gate he discovered in New Guistenal. That was told in the boxed set adventure called, "City by the Silt Sea".

I loved Dark Sun. I played in a 2e Ad&d campaign as a Minotaur barbarian. The setting was myself and the others were a random group of gladiators fighting in an arena to attain our freedom. It was alot of fun.

Dark Sun is a fantastic setting. It's the most different from traditional fantasy of all of the campaign settings. It's also the only one that needs a bunch of new rules to be released for races, classes, magic, etc. before people could play in that setting.

I know I keep commenting on your old videos, but if it helps you at all I'm happy to do it. I'm actually using a ton of Dark Sun stuff in a more lively world. The overall theme is that civilizations spent so much time fighting each other, that the wilderness is starting to take over again. Mulls come from dwarves and humans merging nations, defiling is present but may attract attention of wilderness factions. Etc. Etc.

The last time I played Dark Sun was 2nd edition and it was brilliant. I always thought that it would be perfect to mesh with a Dune role-playing game- the Zensunni cult establishes a colony on Athas like they did on Arrakis or maybe the Sardaukar turn up to claim the planet for the Landsraad. It would be interesting to pit the Bene-Gesserit and Ixian technology against psionics and the Sorcerer Kings.

I will probably never play in Dark Sun but I want it back so that it will force WotC to release proper psionic rules, and I also want it for the desert character archetypes, the bony, horny and psionic monsters, the dragon kings stats and the defiling mechanics to make evil wizardly enemies who fuck up the land.

Yo dawg, I heard you like psionics, so we put psionics on top of your psionics, so you can psionic while you psion. Sadly, Dark Sun came and went while I was busy playing other things, or playing nothing at all. I'm a huge fan of gritty fantasy (I'm sort of an amateur Conan scholar), so this would have been perfect for me.

We just started a "homebrew" dark sun campaign, trying to change as little as possible from 5e. So basically just taking out a lot of monster and putting in some classic dark sun ones converted. Leaving out some races and reskinning a lot of stuff. Like Muls get the half orc stats so forth and renaming everything divine into elemental magicwise. Working out really well so far and you get to test out a lot of UA stuff. Furthermore we play an evil campaign for which is setting is perfect for, as everyone is more or less evil and that leaves you much more room for acting out evil without too many repercussions everytime. For everyone who likes the old sword, sandals and sorcery stuff and hokuto no shinken with a very heavy metal 80's flavour to it this campaign setting is really awesome. Like playing in a world drawn by Frazetta. For further inspiration I suggest reading all the Troy Denning Dark Sun books. Nevertheless an official version really needs to happen.

I think is very consistent, i like the vancian atmosphere, i like its apart from Forgotten Realms in its very own way. Magic works very different. Its skewed. Whilst divine magic, with the exception from possibliy elemental magic doesn't work any more arcane magic is moved from its, in Forgotten Realms, more or less neutral into the deep harmful (actually its what made the world what it is). To fill the blanks we have a lot of psionics on basically everything. The environment being what it is with the notable exception of a few spots where ecology still thrives. Why? Well because its fiercly defended. Everything nature left is pretty much able to defend itself - because it has to, i guess. Dragons... mmmh... thats also special. There is only one, which is basically the most powerful sorcerer king undergoing some sort of transformation. So if you think its pretty crappy to loose dragons as a creature... well... that place is taken over by the drakes which are pretty, pretty powerful in this setting, along with halflings, elves and eladrin and so on. Metal is scare, meaning lots of weapons are bone and such. Its pretty much Forgotten Realms gone Mad Max. From all the expansion settings it makes the most sense to me. The divine-magic-psionic thing is a bit strange, as is bone gear (and that makes traditional Forgotten Realms still the top choice for me), but when looking for something different this seems like a top choice. Sadly there was no Darksun in 3-3.5 (starting with 2nd, if i remember correctly), making a comeback with 4th but we all know how that turned out. I'd definetly like to see it for 5th and i think i'd probably go with an eladrin/elf in this setting, although... you won't be welcome within the sorcerer kings cities. Definetly not. Its very interesting as a gameworld but it wouldn't be exactly the spot i'd pick to settle with in real life, which is why i like it, i guess.

I love literally everything about dark sun. it hits all my favorite parts of playing games. I don't even like psionics, but I still LOVE dark sun in every way! this is the one kind of setting where I can like psionics XD You've also given me an idea of a campaign. Nibenay feels his first twinge of fear. the news is hidden to all but him, the village it was discovered in slaughtered along with the messenger. but rumors still abound, spread from the elves. Rumors that the King failed his task. A gnome has been spotted. and it wants blood. and if it makes it to the capital, its appearance may be all which is needed, as an open declaration of revolt. or a cause for war, Hamanu has had far lesser reasons in the past. even the Shadow King might fall, and the adventurers must find the gnome, either to execute it for bounty or protect it for rebellion. The kings hate to admit it, be even they are still mortal...for now.

Ability score rolls were 5D4 rather than 3d6 in Dark Sun. If we were to go point buy how would you adjust for this? 5D4 is an average ability score of 12.5 compared to 10 with 3D6. If we were to change the point buy from 27 points to 42 points and allow for the purchase of the ability score of 16 for 11 points and 17 for 13 points that would min-max out at 3 ability scores of 17 to start and 3 ability scores of 9. A Human could start with a 20 in something at the start of the game which in the case of Dark Sun isn't necessarily excessive. In fact I would probably increase the ability score caps to 22. On the other hand it does create an average ability score of 14 rather than the 12.5 it should be. There's a big difference between an average score of 13 and 14 though, and increasing the point buy to only 30 would create this. Of course, the average of 10 via the 3d6 method iosn't really what we need to be using for a basis for comparison anyway since you can have straight 12's with one 14 via point buy anyway. Perhaps the best way to proceed is to give all players a +1 to each of their ability scores just like vanilla human, and they can add their normal racial modifiers on top of that. Again in the worst case min maxed scenario that human would be able to achieve a strength of 19, which I'm a bit more comfortable with at 1st level. Hell it's not like his shitty bone sword is going to do him any favors. He'll be +4 to hit/dmg from his strength and -3 hit/dmg from the penalties of his weapon anyway until he manages to find a dagger made of real steel. Gear that doesn't inflict penalties in their use is basically Dark Sun's equivalent of a magical weapon. Also, am I recalling correctly that everyone in Dark Sun, including all the PCs, had some degree of psionic ability? If so, I suppose giving all the PC's Mage Initiate as a free feat at characters creation would be the best way to handle this, swapping out mage spells/cantrips with psionic abilities. Err,...does 5E have official psionic rules anywhere yet?

I hope I remember this right. If you wanted to play a character from another plane, he should be at least level 3 to survive amongst level 1 Dark Sun characters. That's how deadly Athas (the Dark Sun world) was.

I think they're not going to release Dark Sun, or Eberron for that matter, until they get psionics polished, seeing as how it contributes to either setting (Dark Sun moreso). Psionic Restoration, the mystic discipline from the UA, is like having divine healing when no deity is present, which fits Athas perfectly.

Dark Sun and Planescape were the best campaign settings in AD&D. Dark Sun requires in my opinion the piecemeal armor rules and currently the 5E lacks the extended rules. So in best estimates we are at least 2 years away from Dark Sun campaign setting in 5E. And WotC should release first the Forgotten Realms and Eberron campaign guide books, before they revive Dark Sun. Dark Sun's take on the enviroment / Athas is the best in any campaign setting and it teaches many DMs and Players to look different at the world in that they are playing, like Ravenloft teaches us a lot about what real monsters are. And that makes Dark Sun quite unique and awesome.

Given the abortion that was Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, as well as the current politics of critical race theory loving Hasbro and conservative hating Wizards of the Coast, I would just as soon they leave beloved settings like Dark Sun well enough alone. Go back to destroying settings nobody cared about anyway, like that place 4th edition was set in, or one of the "Magic the Gathering" settings.
