the flamberge is cool because it's like a normal greatsword mixed with a curved greatsword. It has the greatsword r1s as usual, but then its r2s are just the curved greatsword r1s, which makes sense with how curvy it is. It also requires less strength than any curved greatsword, which is a little weird The real-world flamberge is nothing like the dark souls 1 version, the other games are all more historically-accurate (even though it's serrated in ds2 for some reason). The squiggly blade has had a lot of explanations given by historians, and some types of flamberged blades do kinda make sense (rapier-style shorter swords), using the squiggles to make an opponent lose a bit of stability when the blades clash, or increasing the blade's stability by redirecting force better. On flamberge zweihanders though, the only solid explanation (since zweihanders weren't really used for 1v1 duelling) is that they looked cool, and some people were really into them (the landsknecht soldiers who used them definitely look like they'd choose the coolest looking weapon). This is backed by the fact that, despite the variety of different types of flamberge, none of them were ever that popular. The whole idea that they caused deeper wounds with the funky blades was just one of those things the victorians threw out there that butchered medieval history for a while, and that's the idea that fromsoft probably used to give all the flamberges bleed
