That was seriously the most basic, and arguably worst, ending. You did your duty, the world stays on life support for a few more years-- maybe a generation or two. And when the next Unkindled comes by, you'll perhaps be like Lord Ludleth: a legless corpse on a throne, waiting to be returned to ash. Or maybe there won't be anything left of you but the echo of yourself added to the Soul of Cinder for the next round. But the world still exists, choked with ash, infested with crawling Dark, and struggling to draw breath. Woo-hoo. (One downside of playing this without the benefit of the context from the first two games: you can't tell how far the world has fallen, or how meaningless your sacrifice is relative to the original Linking of the Fire. That was a maelstrom; this? This is barely more than embers even with the job done. DS3's is a world on its death bed.) You got within like two or three further actions of unlocking a literally darker but much more interesting ending, reputedly the "true ending" of the game-- taking the world off life support, pulling the plug, death and rebirth. You were within maybe twenty or thirty steps of the key item in the darkened shrine. Mind, none of the DS3 endings are particularly happy in a conventional sense. You can stoke the meagre, struggling fire; you can smother it and let the world sink into Dark and silence; or you can be manipulated into becoming ... basically Sauron, which is maybe a happy ending for the Hollows? By whatever road, the kinda-sorta existential life raft the DLCs focus on is pretty badly needed.

@@NotPolarEX That's pretty much what Prince Lothric had to say, yeah. "The fire-linking curse, the legacy of Lords-- let it all fade into nothing." It's also the basic reason you had to go track everybody down. The Lords of Cinder were all, "You want me to sacrifice myself for what? For *this* world? Nah, I'm done. Catch me if you can." The only one who stuck around was Ludleth, who really seems to want to keep it all going. Only ... he's also the only one who couldn't run if he tried. Accepting his fate could be principle, or it could be coping. To my eye the least-depressing ending is actually to side with Lothric, accept the natural cycle, bow to the inevitable and let Dark finally win-- with the promise that eventually it will all begin again. (The DS games have some strong Buddhist themes, like in Sekiro, but better-hidden. DS3 shows them more clearly than most.)
