Jake Alter he did learn much from melkor, a section of the silmarillion i just read talked about it when he took over the isle of werewolves. Sauron never comes close to the deeds of melkor though.

I think it might be a malformed question to ask who's more powerful out of morgoth and satan. it seems they practically are the same character just in a different context. much like eru is the Christian god. it would be like asking who's more powerful out of aslan and jesus

Not even close, Melkor was made by rolemodel of Lucifer aka Satan aka Mephistopheles aka Baal...Lucifer wanted to kill his brother Izual by demonology and than first sin was born, envy...This is still in2020 bigest problem in society, it came from illiteracy bc most ppl are still very limited in brain, education have nothing with it... Morgoth is essentially the ego of Illuvatar. The largest portion of his mind and his biggest competing force of thought amongst all the offspring of his thoughts. Our egos seek to prioritise the individual over the whole, to remake things in their own image through envy and insecurity. Morgoth is the ultimate god of fear because he IS fear, is ruled and made manifest by his own fear - of insignificance, impotence, and the inability to love.

Illuvatar is far above ego. Melkor is enslavement to the ego and desire rather than respect for the hierarchy of creation. The Catholic philosophy of enslavement to one’s own vices versus the true freedom to be above one’s own base wants. Morgoth is base want and vice manifested in one elemental of domination. Morgoth is analogous to mortal sin. He knows what he is doing is wicked and chooses to do it anyway.

*Here is an interesting "What If": what if there was never a Durin's Bane in Moria?* -Cory Morgan I am quoting this comment from the Dagor Dagorath video because it really caught my interest, and there were some really cool and important things that people pointed out in the replies. It's incredible as a minimal change in one historical fact can change everything, I think this is the beauty of the "What If". I organized everything that seemed to be important here, so Yoystan can take inspiration and make another awesome video: >The Dwarven influence could have extended throughout the Misty Mountains >Dale would likely not exist, or be very poor, since there would be no Erebor to create the commercial routes >The Wars of Dwarves and Orcs would not have happened, so the Orc population would be greater by the time of the War of the Ring. Or, maybe, their population wouldn't be so great at all, since there would be no Moria for then to hide in and procreate, and the powerful dwarven kingdom would likely hunt them down >The Dwarves maybe would have helped more in the War of the Ring >If the Dwarves continue digging and hoarding treasure, would Smaug attack then that far south? So, since posting the initial question on the Dagor Dagorath video, I spent some time pondering, and I came up with what I would refer to as the "Absolute Worst Case Scenario" here. It goes something like this: Assuming no Balrog and the dwarves continue to dig, eventually they make contact with dark, Nameless Things in the roots of the world. These beings, so terrifying were they that even Gandalf dared not speak work of, and so old that they existed before Sauron himself, kill all of the dwarves in Moria, and eventually break out into the greater, upper realm of Arda. However, something pulls at them, and the sense a power not unlike their own coming from two different directions: One from the region of Erebor, and the other from the forest of Mirkwood. They pursue the strongest force first, and quickly find the creature Gollum who they dispatch all the while he screams of his "precious." They then find the Ring, which the had sensed contained a great power within. Being older and closer in power to Melkor than Sauron, the great leader of these Nameless Things takes the Ring and becomes it's absolute master, dominating the Ring fully and taking it's power for its own. With the Ring, they are now able to sense to other force, and even bid it come to them. Once it (the still weak Sauron) does, they enslave him and command him to teach them of the upper world. With the knowledge of all other races and every other secret Sauron has ever had, the free peoples of Middle Earth are either killed or enslaved quickly, and the last we see is Sauron building boats preparing to travel to the Undying Lands and seige even the Gods themselves.

Cory Morgan The Nameless Things are, in fact, a very interesting subject. There is one more thing I want to mention regarding then: when Gandalf reports his battle with the Balrog, he says that they fought *beneath the living earth, where time is not counted*. We are told that time only exists in Arda, so could they be fighting *outside* Arda? It was originally flat, and if the Nameless Things came from the Void, they probably entered in the unknown region below. When the world was made round, maybe they were bounded inside of it, but some passages to the Void remained, much like the Eldar Route to Valinor, but much more terrifying

I believe the Nameless Things may br echoes of the Discord of Melkor, unintended corruptions of the Void. Alternatively, they may be older than the Ainur, and have their origin in a time known only to Ilúvatar. Why would he create them? I have no idea, but there is potential por interesting theories here

@@JoaoPedro-qp9cw Well the only known thing that Eru didn’t create was the darkness itself.We know only one phyisical and that is Ungoliat.There Are maybe more phyisical forms or the Pure form(I mean that It could Be that at the depths of Arda could have source of the darkness.Maybe Melkor saw the Darkness in his journeys through the Void which gave him a big impact so it could have been one of the reasons why he became the Dark Lord.

Morgoth is honestly one of my most favorite villains in Fantasy, both because he has such a deep history and played such a huge role in the History of Arda. And Tolkien obviously took much inspiration from Satan from Christianity, because he was a devout Catholic (I am a Catholic too coincidentally). He is overall a villain I very much aspire to create when I become a writer someday and hopefully build a great world that can stand among Tolkiens Masterpiece of a world! :)

Listen to the man himself state that is to return a culture back to england to call its own, to revive an ancient world that was nearly burned completely by christians and many other groups. He haaaaaates allegory okay? He made a souly different world for the goal of restoring ancient knowledge. Study his scholarly work, specially in regards to the pleidies/seven sisters star system and how it resembles alot of things within his works. This man even outside his work was always studying anything to do with that realm/cluster/world. He was a very wonderful man. Trust me, if a total christian took hold of the movie, it would be basically an advert to join the faith, lol. Not bashing you nor Catholics, just saying they got allllot if stuff from thousands of years back to this day to answer to, so yeah. Haha. Tolkien is awesome and i adore him!

@witch blade Melkor was as powerful as he was because he was pretty good at everything, but he wasn't as good at any one thing as the other Valar. So Melkor was better at combat than the other Valar, but not as good at it as Tulkas, just as he could command water better than any but Ulmo, etc.

I hope you go into Morgoth motivation. If I remember correctly, in one of Tolkien's letters he noted Morgoth fell to a nihilistic hatred of Eru and creation itself. Therefore, he dominates not maintain perfect order (like Sauron) but to turn all things to the inverse of how Eru made them just to spite him (though this is a bit of speculation).

A concept that his enemies simply couldn't understand initially, they were pure, innocent children and he was the old cynic. He was part of Eru's plan I believe, he was impatient before he went into the void, meaning he was created that way by Eru directly right?

I think even his supporters did not fully understand his purpose, or Sauron certainly seeing his goals and motivations were wildly different to his master's. Furthermore, I'm with you on Morgoth being part of Eru's plan, though we should not underestimate the possibility of him being able to oppose Eru's designs (however feeble) willfully through the use of free will. However, I don't think Eru's to blame. Consider he would've known a world where his children walk free requires evil or else they can not choose the good/noble. So perhaps he set the pieces in place and when Morgoth choose the fall, allowed him to (again a lot of speculation, using a bit of religious argumentation for the problem of Evil, which I'm sure Tolkien would've known).

"the secret fire" etc. all concepts from texts like the Chaldean Oracles and other PRE-CHRISTIAN documents. none of which are present in any christian traditions aside from christian gnosticism. you dont have to like it, and you can stand on the ground of tolkien virtue signalling about his judaic cult beliefs, but the characters and concepts dont in any way line up with christian doctrine or belief until you back up so far you at a level of vagueness where you can say "good verse a corrupting evil" .. thats the only level that it can be said to "match" christian cult beliefs.

Great video Yoystan. I love the part where the Elves already seem to understand the treacherous ways of Melkor. Wished they would have understood sooner, including the Valar. That's one thing that sets this universe as complex, you have to be on the characters position to fully grasp their actions. Awesome.

Nothing better than a cup of tea and LoTR lore vids during coronavirus crisis.

Love this condensed summary of their actions during the beginning, it's a good refresher and also makes it easier to understand the whole story as I'm still reading the early stories.

I was disappointed that Morgoth won the vote instead of Feanor, but you did much to keep his story compelling despite its resemblance to the archetypal fallen Angel and the fact I've read his wiki page a few times lol

Tolkien was a genius. This is awesome! Thanks for this. These are the entertainment I like. Something that actually makes sense and has a morale to the story. You can also see the awesome biblical influences on Tolkien’s work. Lovely!

It is quite easy to understand that Tolkien had Lucifer in his mind when he wrote the character of Melkor and Manwe none other than Gabriel, the archangel. He certainly adopted a lot from the text of Abrahamic Religions. Great piece of work by the Old Man. Btw, hats off to your video dude.

I think there is something to Morgoth that is far more deep and phylosophical. As in you NEED conflict and strife for things to grow and evolve to gain strenght and to overcome adversity. As such it would be logical to assum that Eru created Melkor to be just such an adversary weather willing or not to help his childeren grow and evolve. Just think what a world t would be without him? It would be stagnant and unchanging, even the world would be flat and boring, nothing ever chainging or improving just stagnant serenity.

well illuvatar's ultimately responsible for all the bad things including morgoth, he created him with the ability to rebel and did nothing to stop him. but I can kinda see it from his point of view, if I was an all powerful god and created stuff, i'd probably want to put a bad guy into it to make things more exciting and for me to grab some popcorn to watch. admittedly it would make me as much of a dick as illuvatar, but ah well, even the omnipotent need their entertainment XD

On the contrary, Eru/God will do just that at his rightful appointed time. After all Melkor/Satan's time on Arda/Earth is numbered - but only God knows the number of his days. Eru's ultimate purpose is to show all beings in the cosmos the folly of going against the good, his will. You, being a limited mortal with finite conceptions of reality, cannot possibly say that God cannot create quite a splendid reality free of evil for all who wish to be a part of it to live within.

The best thing about Melkor is that he actually have reasons for why he wants to rule the world. You get where he is coming from, and in (some way) you CAN feel sorry for him. The greatest villains are those you can understand their actions even if their horrible and gruesome!

Makkaru112 this quote is so obviously a reference to the Christian conception of God that you can’t argue it wasn’t a part of his inspiration. But perhaps Tolkien was more of a medieval Christian, thinking of God as the perfect being who created the world as an offspring of his thought. There is a scientific and philosophical logic behind this idea. So maybe Tolkien was upset that people thought he was ripping it off of Christianity SPECIFICALLY. The Greeks, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and Christians all had a similar notion of the idea of an ultimate reality that was split up into a space/time story or wheel that unfolds over time. Perhaps Tolkien wanted to create his own story, his own “religion”, just like George Lucas with Star Wars.

If we don't get a silmarillion series of movies in the next 10 years I'm gonna be pissed..

Your videos and channel is such an inspiration Yoistan, that I'm reworking mine towards more fantasy stuff; namely doing Fantasy history and theogonies, starting with Suikoden, then Krynn and then Middle-Earth. @@yannaischrire7327 Yes, taunting may have been part of Gandalf's intent. He was certainly holding off the Balrog until the rest of the fellowship was safely off the bridge. And, being the complex character he is, perhaps Gandalf was "invoking" powers as a Maiar and as wielder of the elven ring Narya to prepare himself to attempt to defeat the Balrog.

I thought the dwarves were created by Aule the Smith and awakened first but then they were put back to sleep because it wasn't part of Manwe and the Valar's plan.

I know this video is about Morgoth but you truly explained the links with in the history of the lore beautifully. Great job Men of the West. I am currently reading "The Silmarillion" , it's truly out there and I tend to get lost when learning about the evles in the early ages. Once again you explain it amazingly.

I believe that Ungoliant was one of the 2 primordial beings in the void, prior even to Eru. She symbolises greed, sloth, hate, anger, power, fear and betrayal. As for the other primordial I believe it to be Tom Bombadill since he claims to have been there from the beginning and he embodies the complete opposite of Ungoliant (love, trust, happiness and so on).

Tolkien was a Catholic--in the old meaning of that term--and he would not have made a creature older than the Creator. It is obvious in the Silmarillion that Tolkien gave his version of the creation story. Tolkien leaves the origins of some characters like Ungoliant and Tom Bombadil mysterious, since he wanted his legendarium to seem real--and in the real world we don't always have answers to everything. But also remember Tom was originally a character from a totally different story Tolkien made for his children, and he included in LoTR only for them.

Very interesting (if not correct and an merely entertaining) concept. I love your thoughts on this! Outta the box on this. It would be seemly for this concept because I found Eru to just be a creator entity who was kinda hands off. It could make sense their being 'titans' who were before, ultimately playing a grand chess game on a cosmic level through Eru and Melkor. Tolkien's universe allows us the indulgence to theorise these concepts when it's fleshed out but not necessarily bindingly so.... Jesus that was supposed to be two lines haha

I've always been a fan of Morgoth, he's one of the most engaging Dark Lords in fiction for me. very glad to see that you are doing a 2nd video to do the character justice. side note, was I the only one entertained by Garruk standing in for Tulkas? Keep up the good work Yoysten! You mentioned the Noldor a handful of times. at some point, I would really like to see videos(s) about the three Kindreds of Elves. Tolkien did something cool with them, you don't see that level of detail in other mythologies.

Morgoth and Sauron were both evil beyond belief and the horrors they unleashed upon Arda were unforgiveable...yet I understand what drove them down that path. Grief and the feeling of being not good enough drives to madness and despair, then to foul deeds. Very well written characters, both.

Have to wonder if there was an even more evil that turned Melkor

I just finished watching Lord of the Rings extended edition (took 3 weeks) so it's great to see more about the legendarium.
