I'm a violinist and have played in a number of orchestras. I would've died if I got to perform there. I totally get that trombone player, he must've been stocked beyond belief.

I've worked backstage on over a dozen of these metal band + orchestra shows and trust me, you are not alone in feeling like that. No matter the age or instrument, most of these musicians loved the experience, be it because they could play in front of THAT many people, or because they could play something not moviescore or classical or for the vast majority because they just fucking love Metal and especially this kind of metal marries with orchestra so goddamn well. It's epic for everyone involved. Even for the massive amount of tech people working behind the scenes trying to keep everything going. Don't know the exact onstage headcount at the Wacken show, but for the shows they used for the DVD, there were 90+ people on stage and at least as much working backstage doing tech. In terms of tech alone, this is a hell of an undertaking.

I've always wondered if the orchestras/choirs in metal/classic crossover stuff are bored and there just for the salary (the orchestral stuff sounds quite basic stuff and not much of a challenge), or are they getting a kick of the show? Some column A some B I guess.

I am really glad you decided to react to Dimmu Borgir. I have never been a fan of black metal but I really gave a try to many bands long time ago (20 years ago...lol) and only DB cought my attention. Actually I really liked some of their songs. I don't recall the name of the songs... I remember only one - Reptile. Somehow they sounded much more melodic than other black metal bands. So I would really like to see more reactions of them and I am glad you enjoyed it!

Dimmu Borgir has skyrocketed to one of my top bands of all time. They fit exactly what I look for in metal. the orchestra is absolutely fantastic and the musicianship is godlike. Other tracks you have to check out which will leave you just as speechless as this are definitely In Death’s Embrace, which is in my opinion and many other’s opinion an even better track than Mourning Palace. It has an insane orchestra and a godly guitar solo to match. another song with musicianship just as superb is The Insight and The Catharsis. Totally jaw dropping tracks.

Me, at that time being an innocent goth girl with no love for heavy guitars or screams... And Mourning Palace still gets me every time. I cannot summarize the feelings I have for all the atmosphere, composition, just the whole piece. I just take it all in every I am fortunate enough to hear it. Last Dimmu Borgir concert I've been at was in january 2020. I went with a friend and former classmate... she got a bit concerned about me doing the windmill thingy all the time. Thomas, you just heard the song that made me a Dimmu Borgir fan for life about 15 years ago. I heard a few of their songs before hand, mainly from Sampler discs, but once I heard Mourning Palace, and all of its time changes and whatnot, I was like, this band is the Shit! I was never into Black Metal, persay, but Dimmu's compositions (despite the criticism they get from other Black Metal fans) are what allow me to tolerate the black metal vocal style and driving guitars.

I suggest you check out "Winter Thrice" by Borknagar. The song has an amazing lineup of 4 magnificent vocalists (one of which is the former Dimmu Borgir bassist and clean vocalist ICS Vortex). It has a nice mix of painting beautiful melodic landscapes and sheer brutality. A real masterpiece.

Hello there my good Sir! I've been checking you out for quite some time, great reaction as always... But when I see someone react and like Dimmu, I subscribe! Check out Progenies of the Great Apocalypse, Gateways, both from the Live Forces of the Northern light tour.

"PROGENIES OF THE GREAT APOCALYPSE" (the official non-live video) is an awesome experience you won't ever forget. It seems it was something directed by a mix of Tim Burton, Zack Snyder, Quentin Tarantino and a pissed-off Batman. Trust me.

Their first two albums, For all Tid and Stormblast, are the best melodic black metal albums of all time. It was before they changed their style to more mainstream black metal. Of course their later albums are still great but none catch the magic of those first two. They'll always have a special place in my heart

I'd love to see your reaction to Henker - Mental Corruption. The song is 125bpm and the outro the drummer plays quad bass for 1/64th notes for 2000bpm quad bass - The fastest bass recorded.

If you enjoyed this, maybe you could try out some of the newer Shade Empire if you get a chance and haven't done so already? Songs like "Ruins" and "Anti-Life Saviour" fall well into this epic, symphonic black metal sound.
