@@ThaneGaming that's a really good way of putting it. In a way, earthbound shows children the extremely dark things but does so in a way similar to a parent. I really think earthbound had almost completely unanimous positive influence on people who played it - especially children. It hits in certain way other games don't and in ways other games never could. Because a lot of the topics addressed are things that would be extremely traumatizing in real life, and I think it's extremely important for children to see the world for what it truly is. But the way they are shown the world really matters, I know certain parts of my childhood traumatized tf out of me and I wouldn't want someone else to have to go through those same things.

I think one of the most fucked up things about Mother3, is that Kumatora was almost certainly intended to be the last magypsi until very late in game development. she, like the other magypsi's, has pink hair, and several NPCs mention having a hard time telling if she's a boy or a girl. she hates dressing as 100% feminine, has close ties to the magypsies, unused art, and her magic powers are very similar to the other magypsies. Imagine the devastation of having just survived Claus, and then having to pull her needle.

  • @tomdekler9280

One of the saddest moments of foreshadowing Claus' identity comes from the way we see him wield his lightning sword to attempt to electrocute Lucas' party the first time the Franklin badge hits back. He swings it diagonally and then down in the exact same way Flint swung a piece of lumber around in reckless distegard for his loved ones when learning about Hinawa. We already know Flint left a traumatic violent impression on Lucas through his abusive specter on Tane Tane Island, but here we see Claus attacking his own brother using the exact same violence he learned from that terrifying moment in his life.

@@ThaneGaming Giygas background is even darker then you said. George escaped after Maria died, when small Giegue fall in despair distracting aliens. Because they didn't understand emotions only thing they could do was to wipe his memory and call experiment a failure. Many years later during preparations to invasion, Giegue learned from analytic device known as Apple of Enlightenment that boy hold key to his defeat. Learning about his PSI powers, he launch attack prematurely assuming that is the threat. But it set him on self-fulfilling prophecy because fact that he did try kill descendant of Maria, was the key. When kids start singing lullaby, he regain memory and fall in despair again. There is a interesting theory regard Earthbound events not being as most people think. There is obvious plothole, what could be intentional. Regard the fact that Giygas was supposedly attacking form the past. But how if he was defeated? Furthermore in Mother 3 we learn that great war did happen. Some people imply that traumatized Giygas was actually locking the system. But Dr. Andonuts (who is absolutely sus) working with Poki manipulate party to remove him from power, exactly so Poki could takeover the system leading to the war. And finally. Even if series would not be continued (for many reasons, most notably it being Itoi way to deal with his own personal problems). This franchise quite possibly has continuation. Ape known now as Creatures is in fact one of core members of the Pokémon company, responsible for the lore. In fact Pokémon has tons of references to Mother with most obvious ones being Ultra Space from Sun and Moon. Also fun fact: "é" is read as "i". It is a French letter, with Pokey (Poki/Poké) Minch also being French in origin. In fact Mother 3 would explain character of Lieutenant Surge from Pokémon Red/Blue, who is canonically American (yes!) soldier fighting in long forgotten war in the past. I really hope they would reveal in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it being actually continuation of Mother 3. It would be amazing!

I always thought Porky was the realest victim of MOTHER. He, maybe influenced by Giygas, kickstarted everything because he was jealous of Ness having everything he didn't. Including a loving _mother_ . The entire series is clearly about love and the absence of it - not necessarily hate, but the feeling of love and loss, or never having been loved at all, and how tragic and horrific that could be or turn people into. It sort of hit me watching this that the incomprehensible form of Giygas could be interpreted as what the anguish of _knowing_ love, from Mary, and living without it for a Very long time might look like, especially considering the last thing we know he did was being defeated by the sound and memory of her lullaby. He's the actual picture of confusion and grief. Plus, he's an alien, we have no idea how he works I like that Mother 3 brings it back from cosmic horror to a more grounded, human-centric story after that especially, because Pokey was _there_ when Giygas was destroyed, which literally _had_ to be extremely traumatizing, then he ruined himself using a time machine, and still, after countless years, he remembers Ness, and remembers wanting to be his friend most of all. But he keeps those memories locked behind high security. He's ancient, but he never grew up. It's a very scary idea to me. He's just a kid with no family and an annoying knock that wanted a friend. Everything he did is reprehensible, but if you trace everything back to the origin, those were the catalysts for Earthbound/MOTHER 2 and later 3. Arguably the real reason is George stealing PSI but w/e, it still led to that. Anyway, there's my spur-of-the-moment Ted Talk, I'm gonna go subscribe now. Excited to see more of your content.💙

I mean at the same time his interaction with the party before his boss fight blatantly haves him note - "Oh it's okay I've been abused so I get to do whatever I want to everyone else in retribution, because you'll forgive me right?" I feel too many people fall into that trap in real life where they forgive harmful actions that are understandable but not justifiable. Regardless of what happened to turn him into a monster he still hurt people sorely for entertainment since he's still mentally a child unwilling to grow up

  • @FrogmaskMusic

@@icefiredragon94 I think people who instantly jump to "Yeah but Porky sucks" are missing the point of the comment-- And he does! Porky is an insufferable prick throughout Earthbound and just a straight up monster in Mother 3. But I think what's really highlighted here is that Porky demonstrates a cycle of abuse and *especially* what happens when someone chooses to just follow it-- Porky didn't get love, so he wants to deprive everyone else of it. And that's disgusting, obviously, as explainable as it is. But showing compassion-- disrupting this cycle, giving love to someone who doesn't have it-- is all the more important to make sure it never spirals to Porky's levels of true, unhinged, childish cruelty. A lot of people read Ness (possibly?) rejecting Porky's friendship as the turning point for Porky's unmatched destructiveness later on. And that's understandable too-- Ness is a middle schooler tasked with saving the world, who pretty rationally doesn't want to deal with his annoying, bratty neighbor who just collaborated with a child-kidnapping *cult*. But Ness, thus, never steps in at a point where Porky *could* really benefit from it. Never at any point can Porky's actions be called forgivable. He's awful. Genuinely awful. But I think it's more important to instead interpret them as *preventable.*

@@icefiredragon94 I agree, too many people forgive too easily. You're only a victim until you make someone else a victim, too. If someone lashes out and yells, that's forgivable. If they tread into a pattern of abuse, they've crossed a line. Same with depression leading to becoming negligence, and many other things. While people should ve understanding, and even allow one to work to atone for what they've done, but there's a line one crosses where "your problems" are no longer just "your problems" once you've inflicted them strongly enough on others with no remorse or will to change.

I think the end of Mother 3 is the only time I ever saw my older brother tear up to any kind of media. I remember afterwards he expressed to me, who was experiencing the game with him, how much he loved me, which isn't something he often does. That it would kill him to see me like that and that he would die for me. Him as well as one of my younger brothers have experienced a lot of health complications through their lives. It's not easy to watch your siblings suffer immensely with no way to really help. Perhaps it's best we played it down in the basement instead of up in the living room, as my mom lost her sister when they were just barely adults. I can't imagine what it would be like to loose any one of my siblings at my age or younger.

2:58:09 - There's a theory that the ASC is the actual Devil's Machine. If you consider that Earthbound is more of a REMAKE than a sequel to the first game, then it would explain just about every hole in the story of both games. It explains why he is effectively using the same kinds of attacks that Giygas uses in Earthbound (he didn't have those moves in Earthbound). Porky, who was alive for countless millions of years, completely loses all sanity and literally becomes Giygas. The ASC is indeed impervious to damage, which is why you basically can't defeat Giygas with any kind of attack. But praying enables you to use a kind of attack that has a form that can't be perceived. So there is no possible way to defend against it, and he is ultimately destroyed while the younger Porky taunts Ness at the end, completing the time loop.

  • @GarryDumblowski

God, I absolutely love this theory. I think I've heard it a couple times, that Mother 3 is the middle game in the series and that the first two games are retellings of the same story, one of which took place before Mother 3 and the other taking place after the Dark Dragon awoke and reset everything. Which is which, I'm not sure, but it sorta feeds into this theory, I think? Though, something still confuses me, which is that clearly Giygas is still depicted as the leader of the aliens in Mother 2. Are Giygas and Porky just... different incarnations of the same person? This series breaks my brain sometimes.

  • @SBaby

@@GarryDumblowski Giygas is Porky. The aliens in Earthbound are likely either a separate race of beings that he met at some point in the millions/billions of years he lived, or they're artificially intelligent robots or cyborgs that were created by technology so advanced that humanity can't even fathom it. Bear in mind that Porky in Mother 3 was already augmenting people and creatures with cybernetic implants. So this would just be the evolution of that concept.

Those buildings, with their own musical theme and sheer out of place placement has always intrigued the heck out of me. Were they an old version of New Pork City that was later built over? Were they the remnants of a predating Nowhere Island civilisation, like Osohe Castle? The distinct lack of acknowledgement or explanation always gripped me.

  • @ThaneGaming

Hey good point! I honestly didn't think of the sewers as much more than a way to explore the grimiest depths of the polluted city, to see where all that runoff waste & toxicity pools. New Pork City is not built to last, and this vile underground system is a good way to show that (along with Porky's lack of care for his citizens, and the environment of course). The apartments are definitely harder to explain, and the fact that they are abandoned is a bit unnerving so I'm glad you brought them up! As a wild guess, maybe they were newly constructed as living quarters for the Pigmasks in charge of building the city? Forcing his workers to live in such an unsightly, unsanitary place sounds like a very Porky thing to do. And since it's all underground, maybe the sewers/apartments were the first spot they looked for the needle? That makes even more sense for the apartments to have been left behind--once work started on the Empire Porky Building everyone moved to dig over there instead 🤔 thanks for the comment, this is really interesting to think about! I almost want to make another video on the topic...if I do I'll be sure to cite you as the inspiration!

This is the first time I'm quantifying this, and putting it into words. Please bear with me. The final fight has always resonated with me very, very deeply. I've never really understood why. It's more than it simply being tragic, it really sent shocks through me the first time I saw it, and every time after. It hasn't lost its' effect even slightly. I got properly diagnosed with PTSD, and it's been something I've lived with a long time, in hindsight. I can't help but feel that the reason it feels so impactful to me is.. well, I know what it's like to live a life that feels like it was a thousand miles away, or happened to someone else. Trying to remember a lot of things is like listening to an old VHS, its a struggle to really attach those memories to real events that really occurred. Now, with getting treatment and getting away to somewhere I can begin to heal, I get those shocks sometimes. It's like waking up and suddenly realizing that my actions are all my own, that all of these things happened. It's like living through all of them at the same time, all over again. It's still really, really overwhelming. I'm rambling, but.. I wonder if that's what it feels like. TL;DR internet person is sad

I personally think there was some minor narrative factor in Earthbound 64, where the Zombie(s) appeared as well, and might have very well left out in the GBA final game. IMO that would've been the link to the Zombies and their potentially raised relevance to the story.

something a lot of people don't realize about the mother series is that it's also the tragedy of Gygas. Undoubtedly Gygas native species is cold and uncaring, leaving their young to fend for themselves, and in a rare case, leave one to a surrogate mother. Maybe... Just maybe these humans possessed the power to control their emotions to enhance their own PSI abilities. Of course Maria and Gygas have a mother-child bond immediately. However George escaped, abandoning his wife, and only god knows what he's taught every other human about their abilities. They are dangerous, they need to be careful, send their absolute strongest. The only one amongst them that can use their PSI in harmony with their emotions. Gygas leaves to earth, ready to absolutely annihilate the planet, but he had this feeling in his stomach. Something that was new to him, something other people of his species couldn't possibly understand. A gut wrenching feeling, yet warm, hesitation and compassion. I can only imagine he was told by his higher ups that given his newfound and weird feelings, he could save a handful, but ONLY a handful of the natives to this planet. He didn't want to do this, he wanted to save them all, nobody had to die. His choices however were to choose a few, and destroy the rest, or destroy them all, and Doom the species to extinction. Self doubt and unwillingness flooded his mind as he fought Ninten, he knew he was fighting family, he didn't want to, but these were his only obstacles. He was fought back. And eventually driven to insanity due to his all encompassing love of Maria. PSI and Emotion and darkness becoming one. Omnipotent, uncontrollable, and mindless. Gygas never wanted this.

Going to mention Undertale, so be warned. I am so interested in the Mother Series considering Toby Fox said that it highly influenced the creation of Undertale. I wonder how much the darker aspects of Mother inspired the darker aspects of Undertale and Deltarune. The presence of darkness, the themes of love and death, and the use of time machines...it keeps me thinking and trying to dig deeper. There's also Toby Fox's Earthbound Halloween Hack, which directly led to the creation of the titular character Flowey, who reminds me a lot of Porky. The idea of being unloved, or unable to feel love, and therefore becoming evil and hurting others...it's quite haunting.

The way that I interpreted the... final action, in Mother 3's final encounter, was... So... man, it's hard to think about how to articulate it but... I couldn't help but imagine what it must be like, to ostensibly have your consciousness go quiet and dark, then be roused again, and be forced to confront the realization that you've been gone, presumed dead by your family and loved ones for several years--those years completely lost to you, existing at most as cruel memories of being made to do terrible things without any power to have stopped them, and now you're waking up to yourself having just heavily wounded your father and still in the middle of trying to kill your brother, who had to live thinking you were dead all that time, and who you've hardly seen in all that time, outside of the previous times you tried to kill him, now being woken up by your dead mother's voice begging you to stop, and rest... And all at the age of 13, with the past 3 being stolen from you, no time to live and develop as a person in all that time, having spent it numb and silent inside your own head... ...There's a reason I cried, in the middle of the encounter, at the end of the encounter, and like, three or four more times the night that I finished the game, and several more times since... like right now... There's, even more, going on, in my head, that's difficult to unravel and put into words, regarding my interpretation of Claus' choice but it... even as someone who's very luckily never had to struggle with suicidal thoughts... I feel like I get it...

"Onett" would be pronounced like "Won-ett", which I always found to be quite a synchronicity as my Mother's name was Lynette, and she always remembered the game because of this. She just passed away this last Halloween. 😓 Anyways, you might notice that though it is the #1 town and therefor is called "Onett" it can also be pronounced like "Own-ett" which would suggest it is meaning to express that it is a dream land, and that these two pronunciations ultimately say the same thing about it. I am alone.

Something to add that might me missing in translation for Mother 2. 4 choice was intentional but only understood in the japanese version. First of all. 4. The number 4 is often omitted in japanese, because its associated with death. Not only death and 4 sound similar depending the pronounciation. But also it is related to ghosts folklore. many buildings straight up don't have a 4th floor, skipping right to the 5th. And in Moonside case i will make the wild guess it's a reference to Pink Floyd Dark side of the moon.

If Picky didn't die due to the apocalypse, then he probably did or at least suffered greatly the rest of his life due to the abuse he probably had to endure with Pokey's absence.

I have started listening to this video again like a podcast myself so I can reflect on the flow and which parts of the script sounded better; I agree with you on the episode transitions as they do end a little abruptly, so I'll play around with other methods next time to keep everything smooth. I'm really happy you enjoyed & found value in this, it means a lot that the longform narration kept you engaged. I've always thought that the script is the most critical element in a video like this, so I spent the most time researching and fine-tuning the writing! Carefully covering the games' themes in depth was daunting at first, so it's reassuring to finally have it altogether here, in a way that ultimately addressed the questions that came to you as a MOTHER fan 😁

Man, this was the best analysis of this trilogy I've seen or heard and I've watched over a dozen videos on them. I didn't play Earthbound until the early 2000s as I had a Sega as a kid and not a Snes, but man, that game was so trippy I stopped part way to look up info on the internet to learn how a game this good and unique didn't sell well but its snes carts sold for over 700 dollars at the time (2005 time frame). Square and Enix Rpgs certainly looked better and had fantastic soundtracks so I know this game had to be off putting initially. But they are still influencing games today, and I'm sad that even when we eventually get a mother 3 translation (really Nintendo...), I doubt I'll ever see a new entry in this series

Reggie has said that if they ever did localize Mother 3 they would have to cut a lot of stuff out that would be considered offensive in the modern day, like everything involving the magispsies, but then it wouldn't be mother 3 anymore. So Nintendo keeps the fan translation up despite knowing about it and treats it as official and endorses it internally but can't publicly release the translation themselves or talk about it because they'd get backlash.

It's been a very long time since I've played the MOTHER games and seeing this video made me remember all those precious memories that I had with the games. The MOTHER games were my special interests from age 12 to age 17. Now I'm 19, turning 20 this year and recognizing how much these games have influenced my way of living. I've always felt a huge connection between myself and these games; after watching this video, I understand a lot clearly why this was the case. All of the major themes with the games are one's I relate with, one's I feel empathy towards. It blows my mind how even to this day, I can look at the MOTHER series and go "thank you for changing my life. Thank you for saving me from the darkest points of my life into one with light." Ness is my favorite character of all time to this day and Earthbound in particular changed my life for the better. The themes of MOTHER 1 and 3 only brought my understanding of life further. Even if I'm a huge fan of Jojo, OFF, TBOI, and all these other game franchises, nothing can ever come close to the connection I have with the MOTHER series. To this day, it's always been in my heart and always will be. Thank you for making this video and reminding me why I resonate so well with Ness and the rest of the characters and themes from this series. Great video. One minor point. The critique of capitalism is rarely reducible to "using money is bad" or "trade is bad", but that seems to be the main take-away from your part about why Mother 3 is not about anticapitalism. Anticapitalism has more to do with the accumulation of capital and exploitation of workers by capitalists, eg. the plotline with Salsa and Fassad. Granted, in most situations exploitation by workers more typically takes the form of a "work or starve" or "work or be homeless" kind of deal, where the whole society encourages a certain kind of production. But that's what metaphors are for. The way the Pigmasks change society into one where work is required to exist and where life is regimented around it is also pretty spot-on for a simplified critique of stuff like Chile under Pinochet or just straight up the creation of early capitalism. An introduction of the market logic by force and authoritarianism. Especially the part about some people straight up embracing this change and not seeing what's wrong with it. Also I don't think I even have to mention the claymen and the catfish. As for the game being more antifascist than anticapitalist, I'd definitely agree, but one might wonder why antifascism and anticapitalism is so often associated with each other. For example, why the majority of historical and modern antifascists are also anticapitalists.

He's become nothing. A fate worse than death. It could be possible this "Forgotten man" was a homeless porky minch after traveling so long and ended up in the late 1800s Eagleland hen Maria saw him as a little girl and he probably scared her away being bitter, old and forgotten.

EarthBound is a very special game. When you play it as a kid a lot goes over your head. As you get older you start to appreciate a lot more of the dialog and references that went over your head before. As an adult, you get to experience being a kid again, as well as the experience of being forced to grow up, nostalgia coupled with loss. Also, it's just fun to play and experience the story and wacky moments again, whether or not it evokes deep personal feelings that stick with you long after like it does with me. I'm coming up on 35, and due for a replay myself. Considering that my last playthrough left me with bittersweet memories though, and I managed to get all of the 1/128 ultimate weapons except for the bat from Bionic Kraken, though, I wonder if I should just let it rest.
