Dare to Be Independent | Camila Coutinho | TEDxPaloAltoCollege

Males are expected to achieve career success while female counterparts are often expected to stay home and take care of children. Camila challenges widely-held assumptions about "traditional" roles in relationships. Camila Coutinho is one of the most influential bloggers in the world due to her simple, fun and creative writing style. Coutinho created “Garotas Estúpidas” (“Stupid Girls”) in July 2006, the first fashion blog in Brazil, which covers the main highlights of national and international fashion, beauty and lifestyle. Coutinho originally created “Garotas Estúpidas” (“Me, Stupid?”) as a way of sharing her passion for fashion with her friends, but her project collected national and international recognition in 13 years of existence. Over the years, Coutinho has collaborated with a variety of international fashion brands such as Jimmy Choo, Dior, Burberry, Diane Von Furstenberg and Dolce and Gabbana. She was the first Brazilian digital influencers to join The Society Management. With over 2.4 million Instagram followers, Coutinho is one of the most recognized bloggers worldwide, and appeared in the prestigious list on Forbes Brazil’s 30 under 30 in 2015 under the fashion and lifestyle blogger category. In 2017, she reached the Business of Fashion 500 list as one of the most influential people on fashion in the world. Coutinho launched her first book, “Estúpida, Eu?” in 2018, which tells the story of her career; transforming her hobby into a business. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

@@tatianarc25 if beauty is where her passion and interest lies, then that's her choice. Why condemn someone's passion and interest just because she said that beauty is not everything that a woman should have? It's like saying someone who loves cars should not take the bus at all, and if you take a bus, you are not who you say you are? And the rich family part, why, should they cause themselves to be bankrupt and poor, begging on the streets? If they are rich, they are rich. That cannot be changed, unless somehow their business fail or something. Think and comment logically. Don't let any old fashion mindset and prejudices cloud yourself. Be better.

I never had a father and my mother never cared for me going to collage. All of my dreams and goals were nothing to her and they bother her I felt as if my goals were insulting her as a person.... I regret not leaving her long ago and follow my own way with new people maybe that could give me support and encouragement. I am a smart and creative person and I don't want to waste it.

Being independent is important in our lifes as women. I think indepence's comes to us when we decide to ignore what people can think about us and their opinions. Once I heard some episode on a podcast that I like a lot about this, actually we are humans and is very normal to think sometimes about what someone else could think about us, if we don't think about someone else opinion probably we could be psychopaths, it is normal to think about that, but is our daily decision choose our opinion first, a psychologist once told me "your opinion is as valuable as another person opinion", and since that, I think I give more importance to my thoughts. As we all know, life isn't easy always as we would like, people, even people we love, could let us down, and that's why we have to forge our self-esteem, and forge our independence and our self-confidence, my message is for women, I think all, men and women, have a lot of weight upon our shoulders, but in that order why not support us as women we already are?, independece is the faculty to waking up and say everyday "I'm alive, I'll live as I wish, I'll built the life that I want for me", sometimes when I feel bad with myself and I realize that nobody is around me to taking some advises, I repeat myself all of those things that surely I would tell someone else, and that helps me a lot. Independence is a daily decision.

I'm a mother of 2, a boy and a girl and one of the values that my husband and I want to pass along to them is to be independent. I always worked my entire life and now taking this time to be a full time mum has been essential to race my children yet challenging for sure. I do want to go back to work...but One thing at the time...I miss my job a lot but I know that someone will do my job as good as mine or even better but no one can substitute my value as a mum, specially in the first 1000 days of a child's life. To help my children to feel safe, connected, loved and confident in their childhood and feel confident to explore the world and to be free and independent in the future I am taking a break now in my career for them. I'm 15 this year, and This is the age I start to actually figure out what I like, you know. Relationships and all aside. But the thing is, for example, i love reading and i'm starting to write my own books, a passion I really never knew I had, and many more but my family, father, sister mother, they really couldnt be bothered with me unless I get good grades and clean the house. I do get so discouraged but I realized that just because they dont really care about my interests or hobbies, doesnt mean I should give up. I find my own sources of encouragement and support where I cant get at home and this ted talk actually cleared up some things for me.
