Dare not to stare at Seattle's 'Crash Corner'

Life is rarely dull at the corner of crash and crunch.
"The corner is fast and dangerous," said resident Joy Hollingsworth.
23rd Avenue East and East John Street is one of Seattle’s most-watched intersections, thanks to Hollingsworth.
"I just care about the community," she said.
Hollingsworth is a third-generation resident of this family home.
"My grandmother moved here in 1946," she said.
She's seen the streets of her beloved neighborhood grow more and more dangerous, year after road-rage-filled year.
"People are trying to avoid the freeway, and so 23rd is just their outlet," Hollingsworth said.
A few years ago, Hollingsworth began filming the street using security cameras mounted outside her home.
"You know what," she recalls thinking. "I'm gonna point a camera and see if we can catch some red light runners."
Since then, she’s documented nearly every car crash, night and day.
"Ten to 15 accidents year-round," she estimated.
Though there have been no known fatalities since she started filming collisions in 2018, there have been some very scary close calls.
"Probably the worst one that I've seen is a little kid from one of the middle schools in the area get hit on a scooter," Hollingsworth said. "Thankfully he's okay, but that was really scary."
While visiting during an afternoon rush hour, we witnessed one car locking up its brakes in the intersection, and another traveling in the wrong direction.
Most wrecks are the result of drivers running red lights.
"There's a lot of T-bones."
Speed is also a factor in most of the crashes. And no two collisions are the same.
"One was this truck that was carrying a ton of wood, and it got clipped, T-boned," she said.
Just a few seconds earlier, a pedestrian had been walking in the very spot where the huge load of wood landed.
Hollingsworth’s videos have helped police solve a few cases.
"Any time of the day they know I have a camera pointing here," she said.
The footage has gotten the public's attention with thousands of online views.
"Hopefully, maybe the cameras bring an awareness to folks that this is a dangerous corner."
Her videos have also helped convince local officials to take steps that should make the intersection safer.
"They were able to see how bad it was," Hollingsworth said. "They're making the lights for the signal be a lot bigger."
They're also placing easier-to-see crosswalk signals, and improving the sidewalks to make them safer and more visible at crossings. With any luck, those changes will help make life at the corner of 23rd and John blissfully boring.
"I just want to make sure that the corner's safe."

The only logical conclusion is that there's an angular problem with the traffic light projection somehow, or there's another traffic light that's in very close proximity that's leading to confusion. As far as the vehicle at 1:48 crossing double yellow, they were likely encountering a group of follow the leader with one lane of traffic in which the leader pulls right up to double parked truck/ride share/etc and everyone is too afraid to cross the impossible double yellow except the hero in the SUV; obviously it's unsafe to cross if there's cars occupying that lane, but if not then use some ingenuity/common sense and keep traffic flowing PLEASE!

I'm sure the solution to this will probably be to take lanes away from drivers and give them to cyclists. It wouldn't surprise me if they "solve" the problem by putting a short boulevard in that conveniently eats up a few parking spaces and forces the people coming down the hill to only turn right and those from below to only turn left. It would solve the problem of crashes and be a massive inconvenience. Both of those outcomes seem to be highly desirable to the idiots that are designing the streets.

The real solution is one European countries adopted about a century ago. Traffic circles. Traffic circles reduce accidents by 93%. Light controlled, four-way intersections such as this one are the most dangerous form of traffic control. North America generally, has been reluctant to move away from stoplights and over to traffic circles. I'm not sure why, because the impact circles have on traffic accidents is enormous. For example, Seattle's collision rate is 11 per 100,000 vehicles. Vancouver BC is 17 per 100,000. But mountainous Switzerland, with mostly traffic circles, is 5 per 100,000. Congested Germany is also 5 per 100,000. England's rate is 2.8 per 100,000. Perhaps the autobody companies are the ones insisting we keep traffic light intersections?

One rarely sees an existing intersection in an established urban environment replaced by a roundabout retrofit. It's a high-cost project because land on all sides must usually be acquired by the government in order to have enough public right-of-way to fit said traffic circle. And then, those lots probably already have structures on them that must be demolished. It's been done twice in my city -- both in locations adjacent to where a huge tract of land was being redeveloped into a private, corporate campus anyway. So the city was able to do the retrofit as a piggy-back on the private project that was happening regardless (in other words, the roundabout projects were cooperative and financially structured as "public-private partnerships"). Even then, the construction still required some slight realignment of the streets entering/exiting the roundabouts in order to keep real estate acquisition costs down.

@@es-qf2gw Roundabouts don't eliminate accidents, they make the accidents less severe. You have to slow down and yield to enter the roundabout and any accidents are almost always side impact or rear end at slower speed. With traffic lights it's at speed limit, or higher speed when trying to beat the light, T- bone, head on or corner to corner impacts that result in greater damage and more severe driver/passenger injuries. When they say "most dangerous" is that number of accidents or injuries/deaths? I would bet if it's a roundabout it's number, the whole point of roundabouts is the slower speed impacts which along with side to side impacts means lesser severe injuries. People are stupid/distracted, you can't design a road or intersection where they aren't going to hit each other.

Nope. Infrastructure affects how we drive. If you don't believe me, then why are highways designed the way they are? The problem is that in America (and Canada), we use highway standards to design local streets. This causes drivers to drive way too fast in areas where they should be driving slow. What's needed is to change the design standards for local roads so that this type of behavior is discouraged. Bigger traffic lights and more beg buttons won't stop this from happening.

Studies show this can reduce crashes by nearly 50% at dawn and dusk. -Longer "all red" phase. -Reduced speed limits. -Traffic calming on the approach to the intersection in all directions. I’m not convinced the way you have just a couple of lights way up high a long way from where the cars are required to stop is a good concept. The position of lights in other countries like mine are far better placed to be able to see closer to eye height and are placed where you need to stop. You also need a lot more red light cameras and speed cameras.

Our sense is that this lighthearted news work product is missing a view from inside the cars approaching this intersection. An in-the-car point of view may reveal a little more insight as to why these accidents keep happening here. Although we're not from the area it looks like King5 evening is more focused on pleasure/leisure news rather than investigative news. Can someone advise if this leisure/pleasure assessment as opposed to true investigative news is the theme with King5 evening?

Why is this intersection unique then? Why do other intersections have less accidents if you think this is just drivers being bad? TLDR of silly youtube comment argument: it's tied for 10th for number of crashes reported. I used python to check the public data set I mentioned (Seattle GeoData). That's out of 8175 intersections with crashes reported. the combined crashes of neighboring intersections is not comparable to this intersection. Applying conservation of matter I understand that the combined traffic of surrounding intersections is at least as large as what goes through this intersection. That's how volumetric flow equations work for incompressible materials. Except the neighboring intersections have traffic that passes through without going in to this intersection, so the total traffic is much higher, further proving the point that this one is uniquely bad.

Distracted driving has only made it worse, and that's one statistic that's climbing up there with DUI's. Eventually someone is gonna see that decreasing response time for responders in highly accident prone intersections could reduce fatalities. Accidents suck, but it really helps when the firefighters are 30 seconds away.

The signals appear old and outdated, Some look like they're still incandescent signals from 50 years ago. So for some or many crashes maybe one of the red lights are burnt out. Statistically 50% of red light violations are done by accident, involuntarily. Those are the ones that usually result in crashes. That's because of the red light violations that are voluntary (done on purpose and with intention), it's usually just people stretching out the yellow (as in the light has only been red for a second or two). I know it's frustrating but remember that most accidents result from people who didn't see the red light, or couldn't comprehend it and / or react in time. Persons of more senior age are usually more likely to be unable to comprehend it. As well as people who are fatigued, caught in their minds and their thoughts, not thinking about what's going on around them. It happens to the best of us sometimes, even without phone usage. Accidents rates have stayed the same or have gone down significantly since the implementation of the cellphone, because engineering has gotten better and improved, but clearly not at this intersection. It's still living in the 70's. That's also why red light cameras are so ineffective at preventing fatal accidents. Other things like backplates or bigger / brighter red lights, fluorescent yellow reflective borders and adding more traffic signal heads in more locations in each direction, better warning ahead of the intersection, better pavement markings and markers, etc. In simpler terms proper engineering has a much better effect at preventing accidents. But, that costs money and money is the source of all evil so the government rarely spends it on safety for the working class. Red light cameras are only installed as a revenue collection device and never or very rarely with intention as a traffic safety device. Of course there are still people who just don't want to wait, but usually those people slow down and treat it like a stop sign, looking both ways first. Hopefully this helped a little with some people understanding what most assume is indecent human behavior.

The usual issue is space. This is a built up neighborhood so any roundabout would need to fit in the existing intersection footprint or they'd have to find a way of acquiring the rest of the space. As far as roundabouts in America go, they have been increasingly common over the last 20 years. And they're mostly being put in as a result of this sort of thing where idiots are ignoring intersections and plowing through. At first they were mostly being installed in more rural areas where it was more reliable than adding unnecessary stop lights, but I'm starting to see them popping up in more built up area. Supposedly, there are a couple that are going in next to I-5's exit 175 in Seattle as a way of helping to manage the traffic crossing the freeway and getting on/off the freeway. The exit sits right on the northern most border of the city.

The only way to stop e this is to employ traffic calming measures within the two blocks leading up to the intersections. These methods are well documented. The issue didn’t start at the intersection; it began in the minds of drivers trying to shave off a few minutes and believing this is a quicker route. They will continue to ignore the signal lights. They need to be slowed down before they get there 🤷‍♀️
