Severin's Description: In this second collection of Italian Gothic shockers, you’re invited to grab your candelabra and enter cobweb-shrouded worlds of violence, madness and sexual deviance that remain unmatched in genre history: Gothic goddess Barbara Steele stars in Antonio Margheriti’s certified masterpiece CASTLE OF BLOOD and its Italian version DANZA MACABRA, both restored and scanned in 4K and presented in UHD for the first time ever. JEKYLL is 1969’s award-winning four-part RAI-TV sceneggiati from writer/director/star Giorgio Albertazzi that contemporizes the classic tale of man’s darkest impulses. Writer/director Corrado Farina reinvents the Dracula legend as a modern-day capitalist conspiracy with his startling and long out-of-print 1971 debut THEY HAVE CHANGED THEIR FACE. And a sizzling Rosalba Neri is seduced by Satan himself in 1972’s THE DEVIL’S LOVER, finally available restored and uncut. All four titles are now presented in their North American Premieres, newly mastered from the best available elements with over 13 collective hours of Special Features.

The aesthetic is a HUGE part of what makes gothic, gothic. The claims she makes feel like the most “I need to say this is amazing even if what I’m saying is abundantly false.” So I totally agree with you. It sort of brandishes gothic horror with an undervalued general brush stroke. Loved the review! I wish I could buy both these sets. Can’t find them anywhere in the UK 😭

I love Italian genre movies and I’m glad deeper cuts are getting released. But I gotta say, the more deep cuts I see, the more I understand why these movies weren’t released previously. I love Rosalba Neri so I’ll try to check out The Devil’s Lover at some point but I don’t think I’ll pick up this set unless the price is right. They’ve released stand alone versions of movies from their House of Psychotic Women set and I would love if they did the same with at least Lady Frankenstein and The Devil’s Lover.

I really hope they do, because some of these movies really deserve to be seen, but the high price of the hit-or-miss boxsets is a major barrier to entry.

Stumbled on to your channel by accident ... totally blown away by your review. I just ordered the box set (prior to watching your review) ... my main draw was Castle of Blood. Never watched the movie but have heard good things about it. I usually like Severin box sets but definitely would go into the set with lowered expectations. Liked and subscribed.

Love your reviews, I really resonate with your opinions and movie preferences. Was wondering if you would do a video of your favorite Italian gothic horror movies, as neither of the box sets seem worth paying for but Im super interested in watching some. Thx

Excellent review of the set. Although I own Danza Macabre on a couple of DVDs -- one a Dollar Tree bootleg of the Severin DVD-- I prefer the Riz Ortolani score, which I own on an import CD (and is available free on KZread).

Thanks for the head's up review. I've been really looking forward to this set's release since it was first announced. Haven't ordered it yet but eventually I'll go into this set with much lower expectations as to avoid harsh dissapointment. Seems really awful what Severin did by including that TV series as part of this set if it's visual quality is really that poor. I'm very dissapointed by them to pull this crap on their often appreciative, paying customers.

Excellent review. The only one I've seen from that pack is " Danse Macabre ", which I found overrated and a bit boring. Will have to look for Rosalba Neri's, something good to watch it has for sure.

Not to be one of those people....but "gothic" is very much a narrative and storytelling device - maybe even more so than an aesthetic. It IS an aesthetic, but the actual narrative content has to reflect the visual aesthetic. Like, something isn't purely "gothic" because it has a spooky castle and fog, y'know? It has to contain a lot of the storytelling tropes of the genre.

Review #1 of 2 from IMDB... "In conclusion, JEKYLL emerges as not only one of the great TV movies but an unsung horror/sci-fi masterpiece. Frankly, it's criminal that this isn't more discussed or readily available"...lol I'll take your word and skip this one!

Just because she has more credentials, don't count yourself short. One thing that I have learned in my experience on the business end of marketing these titles is....well....there are LOTS of pretentious people who are involved in "film criticism" that act as if their name adds to the value of whatever obscure feature a genre specific label puts out. ESPECIALLY now in the horror genre, and because of the growing interest in older films by a younger audience, there are quite a few people that take to these titles the same way major critics talk about Fellini, Kurosawa, Ozu, et all.... So now we essentially have arthouse critics (who about 20 years ago would write these films off as cheap eurotrash) looking for all these political, religious, sexual, and racial subtexts that are mostly not there. I am all for appraising genre films, as well as finding hidden gems that are still out there. I guess I get annoyed by "gatekeeper" and snobs that seem to be prevalent more and more nowadays, for various reasons. You know what you are talking about, and you are passionate enough to get your point across. You also know that she may not agree with your critiques. Bottom line is, however, that you get to watch awesome genre films and talk about them. There is nothing cooler than that.

Post script....I do think that these genre films SHOULD be held in the same regard as the films of Felinni and Ozu and the like, and reviewed as such. I was also making a point that it feels that there is a small amount of critics and analysts that feel because it is a genre film, that it most likely cannot be seen as in the same league.

I don’t entirely agree with the reviewer’s thoughts on the second film in the box set. While l would agree that it’s not really a vampire movie(and thus not a horror movie),l do think a movie that criticizes capitalism and bosses can be compelling and worthwhile. There have been movies (like “Office Space” and “Nine to Five” )that have criticized working conditions that ordinary people have to deal with.

I like Kat Ellinger but I have to disagree with her statement that 99% of horror is Gothic. My formative years where I started to watch horror movies as a young teenager (the 1980s) were mainly dumb slasher movies. However, I did really like and appreciate Fright Night (1985) but I couldn't quite explain why at the time (the scene that had the most impact on me was of the vampire Jerry Dandridge staring at the painting of his long lost love). 1980s horror was largely a cultural wasteland with very few gems. It was only years later when I started to slowly discover the classics of horror film. Then in the mid 2000s when I first saw Nightmare Castle (1965) starring Barbara Steele from a public domain DVD horror collection. It was a revelation to me--mood and gorgeous music that enhanced emotional and psychological impact. Horror is not about gore, lurid images, jump scares, and body counts. Real horror is about getting inside of you. Thanks to DVD I immersed myself in the classics of the 1960s and the 1970s. I'd say that 1974 was the last good year for horror in general. And my favorite genre is definitely Gothic and an aesthetic presentation (Fright Night have been a 1980s teen horror film, but there are elements of Gothic interspersed throughout) are essential for the experience.

I paid $100 for this and basically I got one movie worth seeing out of it. Already have castle of blood. And the Jekyll and Hyde looked like crap and should of been an extra .. the devils lover is all I care about on here. Pretty annoyed at lack of quality and content . Even the commentary was sub par.. hoping danza macabra 3 is better
