DANTE: Inferno | Chronicle phase preview playthrough and impressions

Mike plays through the chronicle story section of the tutorial scenario for this cooperative narrative boss battler.

Note - The team has confirmed they are bringing in a writer to help make the narrative even better, and that they are continuing to work on the ordeals. Also, apparently the ordeal mechanics change in different circles of hell, which should be good for variety

Thank you, Mike, for taking the time to explore DANTE. Giving us the opportunity to showcase our game to your audience is truly appreciated! As with any prototype, many aspects have evolved, especially since we're conducting playtests on TTS and enhancing the gameplay. However, I believe it provides viewers with a good understanding of what the Exploration Phase entails! Once again, thank you. We hope our community thoroughly enjoys the experience!

Mike, thank you very much for your very thoughtful review of the game! I really enjoyed your analysis of the Chronicle Phase and boy, I really wish we had taken the time to send out the most up-to-date versions of the prototype. If you have interest, time, or curiosity, later, we will have the most current stage of this confrontation available in TTS during the Campaign (more or less 3 months of development later) and we had some significant changes in the Chronicle Phase, but I still wanted to know what you would think of them. We cut an average of 1/3 of the texts, we redid some passages to emphasize what the Order did and why it did it, right from the start, and yes, we are working on the characters' backgrounds so that each one of them comes with their own "agenda" in the moment when the Caravan phase begins, in a kind of Codex (just like the Bloodstained Letter). From the second Circle onwards, the characters' Background begins to be explored. In fact, we took this first experience to function as a tutorial and increased the complexity step by step as the Chapters progressed. Still, I think the new version of Limbo is worth checking out. Mechanically nothing has changed, but this change in the narrative pace and the update of the Artifact cards and the fight against the Malefactor already transforms the Game feel completely.

I hope this game has a good itemization system. The one in oathsworn felt pretty tacked on. There was 0 reason to have that many item cards in the game when you are force fed upgrades regardless of outcome. There was no sense of discovery or choice in build like KDM. Ur just given the next set for power creep reasons. Townsfolk tussle did it best.

Thanks for showcasing this game! Excited to see new ideas in this boss battler/story-based genre like Oathsworn. Pretty much agree with all your critiques - I was disappointed by the story part due to how abstracted the characters felt. Maybe I'm a bit spoiled after the excellent world-building of Oathsworn and how well they incorporated your characters into that world. That being said, that idea of Confrontation Objectives allowing story choices to substantially change the battle looks awesome! Would love to see that idea explored more in games.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. If the choices you make can really lead to different fights and endings then that's big plus. But the ordeals aren't that immersive to me. If you have to combine a red with a blue number each time, it's really mostly about luck. I don't like regular skill checks, but at least they're done quickly. I appreciate that they try to divert from normal skill checks, but there's too little agency for me to make it work. I also would like to see specific traits or abilities for each character in this phase. Do characters gain skills for this phase? If so, I would like the skills to be different for each character. It would make me a lot more invested in the character I play which would add to the immersiveness.

I can’t help but feel disappointed with this. I feel like so much is disconnected from the theme. “You see a panther in the woods.” (Now draw 3 blue and 3 red cards and try to combine their numbers to match various target cards) I feel like this just takes you out of the game and is different just for the sake of being different. I would almost prefer dice rolling. Sure, dice rolling is just as swingy but at least it’s quick and keeps the story moving. I love the box art, and the location card art but everything else just doesn’t seem to match the theme. Nothing comes across as a hellish atmosphere. (I saw the map tiles on another channel) I’m keeping an eye on this but can’t help but feel disappointed. Really looking forward to the boss battle so you can change my mind. 😂

I would like to start with a positive. I like the art. I think it fits well to the theme. But oh my gosh… a wall of text followed by another wall of text… in between math puzzles… 🙄 If I would like to read several pages, I would grab a book and not a board game. The decisions are semi interesting, if I back it (the game was on my list, it still is but my interest has been lowered), I will use the quick combat mechanic. Still 2 (?) pages to read but…

I do not like how they try to integrate the story to the game. As far as I remember, Primal will not have such a “story” part, neither does KDM or Townsfolk Tussle. Back to Dante, I have to draw random cards to solve little math puzzles by drawing random cards? Really?
