Man, I knew why I like you. I hate it when people call someone "talented" when they are clearly "skilled". Being talented takes nothing, being skilled takes work. Talent just makes it easier to BECOME skilled.

Definition of talent is having a natural skill for something so you're talking about the same thing. Becoming skilled is what you were talking about

Morgan rose, the drummer for 7dust, said he didn’t care for Danny’s drumming until they did some festival spots together. The consistency of the nightly performances made him a believer.

and danny c makes it look so effortless.
The talent, is being able to write these drum patterns. The skill, is being able to play them perfectly live.

even Live they are so in sync together it's beautiful to watch. Tool has got to be one of if not the only band who is completley in sync with each other on such technical rhythms
I just saw TOOL live in Corpus Christi and seeing Danny just absolutely go into a sort of flow state and watching his craft come out is ethereal. Truly one of the best experiences of my life
I’ve seen him play this live twice. Unreal. The whole audience was just in a trance the whole song.
I've had the honor to see them live! No words can describe the experience.

@ingobordewick6480 Yes! I saw them in Salt Lake and was immediately ready to drive to Denver to see the next one, but I would have had to skip a mortgage payment to do it. Damn kids🙄They argued that they needed a place to live, so I was out-voted😒

I've seen them three times ,I never thought after seeing them on the laturalis tour they could top that but they did
Seeing this band live was the penultimate scratch off the bucket list.

Agreed. I’ve seen hundreds of bands live and seeing them was probably the greatest live musical experience I’ve ever had. The music at face value is heavy, but when you dove in to the nuts and bolts it’s absolutely magic. The time signatures, the synchronization, and the sheer nature of their music is nuts. Amazing.
I don’t think I’ve watched a video like this so many times. And still, every time I watch it I am amazed at the talent AND skill. I think you have to have some amazing drive to work to get THIS good. I don’t think we should forget that this talented af musician is in his 60’s and bro is stacked!
Danny is arguably the best drummer in the world and they have him center stage live. The last time I saw them Maynard, the lead singer, was on platforms at the back of the stage, letting the instrumentalists have the main focus and Danny was in the center with the lights on him, the bassist and guitarist on either side him. I've seen them 3 times now and cannot recommend the live show enough. This song in particular is fabulous live. The reason you can pinpoint the rhythm is because there are multiple rhythms. They are masters at polyrhythms. No one can do what they do.

All Tool members are gods on their Instruments.
Actual mad lad for checking this out! Danny is a legend!
I wanna say, another reason DC is the goat...fist, most drummers don't even explore their minds deep enough to even create something of this caliber, and secondly, if you put any other drummer in his shoes during the breakdown- they would have hit all the pads/toms max volume and try to spam double bass to appear like they have control or power or even skill to pull it off, but DC has that velocity control, we know and he knows he has power, but he controls it better than most if not all. He doesn't just hit shit, he puts emphasis behind that control and tasteful at that. the Ghost notes, the softer hits in between the power shots. all of it is high caliber. An example of what I'm talking about is when Chad Smith was on drumeo and he stopped the host from playing his groove. The host was shook and said it's exactly what Chad had played.. while he was correct, he was also incorrect. Sure he hit the same notes, but he didn't have velocity control on those notes to put emphasis on the groove's feel. In the same sense as a boxer setting up his big hit with a small jab.. you can't just throw that jab like a haymaker.. People sleep on this skill too much, way too much.
Yessssssss… can listen/watch a thousand times and never ever get bored. Reliving my first time through Tool/Danny virgins… love it!!!! Groetjes uit Noordwijk aan Zee
What’s also crazy is Danny is 57 years old in this performance oh and he’s a beast at 6’4” tall

He's 62 now....just saw them Live last week...awsome can't describe it....other worldly!!!
this man is playing 4 genres of drum lines all in one
The reason you can't pinpoint the rhythm in the verses is that it's an additive pattern leading up to a sequence of 33/8 (3+3+3+3+2+3+3+3+3+2+3+2), if I'm not completely mistaken. Like you said, polyrhythm is e.g. around 9:30 when he plays 3/8 with the sticks while keeping a 4/4 on the hihat. It's almost a relief when he goes to a straight 4/4 on the chorus…
The goat, currently best alive IMO. In regard to them playing in unison it goes with the theme of the song that we are all one. Polyphia - Ego death ;)
Love TOOL and Danny. He went to the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Also, when you watch videos of him talking with folks, he’s incredibly humble and kind.
Danny Carey's drumming is the best example of Neil Peart's legacy. His drumming is pure composition and becomes an integral part of the musicality of the song not just time keeping and banging the drums (which can work when needed).
Absolutely! He's a UFO of music! Protect him at all costs while he's alive.
A virtuoso at his craft. People like this can do what ever they apply themselves to. And just be better at it than everyone else. The balls it takes not only to write this, but then to put it on an album knowing full well you are about to have to play it every night for the next two years. Balls.
4 limbs & 4 different rhythms = 🐙🤘🏻🌀
love watching drummers watch Danny play and see them try and count...
Saw him do it live in Charlotte last night and got to see the grudge live for the first time as well 🎶🔥🤘
A lot of them do that, but none of them are even near his level. That's what sets him apart.
In this song as in a lot of tool, Maynard is often opens the phrases on the 1. like around the 6:00 "spirit" is on the 1
Tool live is sound therapy and I always feel like I just attended soul church. Words cannot describe… it’s something one has to experience for themself.
Swiss triplets sound so good, man. The fact that he can do it for so long is crazy.
I'm always here for TOOL
I catch the 1 2 3 4 but they layer on top of which I find awesome really love Tools music
I'm seeing them tomorrow night so damn excited!!!
Danny mesmerises. What a brain! What a body! What a heart!
He is such an awesome musician. Legend !
In my opinion Danny is the best drummer alive currently. So much skill. Human octopus #TOOLArmy
During the "four-rythms" part of Daney, notice how he ALSO increases the volume throughout the whole thing. That's insanity. Starting out slow and increasing your power over.. what? 2 Minutes? That's already incredibly hard to control well. But doing actual insane drumming as well?
So glad you did this one. Danny Carey is fire! I'm going to see Tool again next month, and their shows are always amazing.

Tool's left hand, right hand, and feet all have their own rhythm that come together every six beats or wherever the hell they want to

Oh, I know. I just like to pontificate. Thanks, though. I've only recently started watching reactions of any sort. Ren roped me in. Now I'm watching people find my favorite shit. Kinda cathartic. You da man👍 ( remember I'm old) Keep up the good work
So glad you did this one.
If you feel that you need more, Danny Carey drumming in your life, look up the live version of Triad. With the drum cam.
Seriously always thought a rim shot was something completely different until I seen Danny Carey drum cams.
you need to try " Bottom" from undertow, Henry Rollins does the spoken word, it's a must !............ tool army est.1993..............
Was really funny seeing you try to find the 1 in the non chorus parts :). Chorus only part where they do the human 4x4 .
Danny studied polyrhythms and tabla playing in India. He also studied African beats in Africa. A most versatile and learned percussionist. ❤You can hear both influencing this piece.
i would love to be a fly on the wall of danny's entire drumming career , from day one till now lol
The thing about Tool is that they not only jump around time signatures, they also all individually hit a various times that are unconventional. So, sometimes the guitar will hit on an "and" count when the rest of the band is hitting on a 2 or a 4 count. They all know exactly where they are in the song and all play their own time regardless of what everyone else is doing. Edit: Also, in this song, Danny Carey plays no less than 4 different rhythms at the same time. One rhythm for each limb.
I play drums for almost 11 years now and I'm not able to play a lot of that without hard practice on that song in particular. Some of what Danny does is preeeetty damn hard. It takes years to be able to play an instrument like he does and especially the drums are freakin difficult.
Wait till you hear "Beat", the King Crimson revision with Danny Carey, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Steve Vai that will begin touring in the next few months. It will be the greatest show of prog rock so far this century. Don't sleep on it!
Love the band and this video. There is a similar video of Tomas Haake of Meshugga playing Bleed. It takes polyrhythmic drumming to a new level!
His techniqueis about as flawless as it can gen get for a man who's 6'5+ft tall. His elbow and shoulder level basically never changes. Technical precision with Zero wasted energy
What's even more impressive about Tool is they don't play to the click live. This timing and synchronicity is all them. And Danny is technically a senior citizen now...
He wore a Kings uniform last fall when they performed at Aftershock in Sacramento. From my understanding, he made a choice between pursuing a pro basketball career or music. I'm glad he chose the latter.
There is definitely a reason they call him the octopus!
13:23 this is why his nickname is "the octopus" because it's as if each of his limbs have their own brain controlling them
I'm ok with having seen tool and not waking up ever again!!!!!! It's how good they were
They call Danny Carey “The Octopus” because he can sound like he actually has 8 limbs instead of just 4. Yes, he is very talented and also extremely skilled. He studies his craft and honestly his skill and that makes home one of the best of all time. As for the polyrhythm stuff, they also do multiple time signatures and flip between them all the time so you can’t just tap your foot and expect to follow it all.
Was at this show and man was it amazing. Danny likes to wear the current cities basketball teams uniform but during the encore he came out in laker gear and everyone booed 😂 so fun
That’s why he is “The Octopus”
On the rythm portion I've heard a musician mention somewhat the same of Alice in Chains on having a certain rythm he's not seen in other bands ..can't quiet recall if it was one certain song or their music and how it written ir sounds in general
Danny Cary is the goat! Watching him play, should show his incredible talent. I can’t even imagine how difficult this is to play. You have to have the ability to work all four limbs in completely different time …flawlessly. I never get tired of watching this video.
He's closer with the Bass, usually that's the way it goes, Base and percussion
I respect your reaction to the time signature changes that tool is known for. And yes, Danny Carey is arguably the best drummer alive right now.
This shit goes so hard. Never gets old. The more you listen the more you catch all the rhythms.
The rhythm is difficult to catch at first, for sure. I hope FOR YOU that you turn off the lights and cameras, lay in the dark with your best headphones and listen again after a reaction. Once you do, you’ll realize just how much it DOES fit. Not only that but you’ll discover that it’s almost like it CANNOT be any other way. I don’t know how else to describe it. I actually meditate to this song. It’s the perfect song to put my brain where I need to be. A family member found out that I meditate to this, thought I was crazy… like, literally thought I wasn’t “doing it right” or some shit. They kept sending me these links to meditation videos and I was like: I HAVE THE PERFECT THING FOR ME. Leave it alone. Lol. Anyway… great reaction. Danny is the master. Unequaled. It’s a joy to watch him.
Danny's neurons and acsons are working well. Synapses are awesome.
The difference is there are not many drummers who can do what he can. With Tool, they are all a master of their craft which is why they are the greatest band of all time IMO.
It's polyrhythms, syncopation and also think time signatures. I think David Heretic counted the verses in 33/8. They also have a talent for dropping in a 4/4 section or a division of it to cleanse the pallet to bring you back in then go crazy again
This song has shifting Time Signatures. As a whole Danny says the song is in 33/16 as opposed to the most common 4/4 time signature. Some sections are 12/8, 11/8, 10/8 but for the whole song bar by bar the time changes quite a bit.
Danny is 60 years old ,,,the 🐐
The secret; Danny Carey is Octodad.
Time signatures you will never figure out. Unless you understand it will boggle your mind!!
"The rhythm is so unorthodox", welcome to TooL xD
hey you'll be my door into Tool i'm from the late 60's prog rock realm and waited till now to check them out, i expect them to be more metally goth than old prog rock, BUT i also expect them to have covers of old stuff like say King Crimson maybe Yes and less maybe Genesis but you never know, i hope they have a Rick Wakeman on keyboard. What an adventure will the flight be long or short we shall see
The rythm is 3 counts of 5/4 and 1 count of 6/4 Someone on a reaction vid counted it out as a 32/8 timing
Seen it several times. A real master at the drums. You can put him on the top list next to John Bonham and Neil Peart. By the way, that guy is 6.4 feet tall so he's got a large range.
great reaction , instant follow! he's also like 60 years old in this video
We on this yeah👍✌
Love your reactions to this music. Another amazing drummer you need to check out is Neil Peart! His drum solo live in Frankfurt is great
Let’s not forget, Danny is 62 years young
I can't thank you enough for your breakdown and explanation of the insanely obvious.
The GOAT❤
If you’re a fan of quality drumming….. You may have seen the name Neil Peart a few times. And I strongly suggest starting with Xanadu by Rush, from Exit Stage Left (1981), it’s my personal favorite Rush song and builds a gorgeous soundscape, showcasing all three virtuosos fantastically.
lol i could watch tool reaction videos all day
Secondly…this song is a masterpiece in bringing sound through time that should not work…work. In the most beautiful way. I appreciate your repeated points about experience over years. One thing I feel is missed is that these guys…they have the talent and more importantly the chemistry to not only work through the production of making such a complex song work…let alone sound amazing…but they perfect the craft to be able to perform it flawlessly…on a regular basis…and this is why tool is my favorite band…or one reason why. Good stuff man
Danny is 6'5" muscular drumming machine.
You should check out Yogev Gabay's analyses of Meshuggah songs, using classical Indian vocal notations. It's on yt.
Loved the Tool beatbox :D
Thank you, Vanessa, sometimes you have to see Greatness with your own eyes🙌👊 🐙= 🐐🔥🔥
Larry Bird already knew he would hit the game winning 3
Danny Carey is my favorite drummer because he plays for TOOL. My favorite band. But if you wanna see true drum pyrotechnics... Well, there are plenty who blow him outta the water. El Estepario, for instance, does a drum cover of EMINEM's GODZILLA that has to be seen to be believed.
Danny is quadridexterous
Occasionally i forget that Danny Carey is the best drummer alive on the planet...then stumble across this masterclass.
danny c is the goat of drummers
Danny is an odd-time, polyrhythmic master. starting at roughly 1:18 two bars 7/4 one bar 5/8 played 4x then a variation: one bar 4/4 one bar 9/8 one bar 4/4 two bars 7/4 one bar 5/8 accents are often on beat 2 of the 7/4 bars.
17:11 exact comment
he's mesmerizing i had to leave and couldn't stop mid way
Lol must agree it's somewhat like rubbing your bell and patting your head all while doing hopscotch lol
See Maynard in the back with the mohawk
This one goes a bit beyond mere syncopation. It's in 21/8 time in the verses and pre-choruses. Then they give your brain a break and go to 4/4 for the choruses, which have no lyrics. 👍🏽🌀 Also, if you REALLY get to know the song, he does make a couple minor mistakes. But, he's such a professional that 99% of people will never see it.
don´t know whether you had the chance already to listen to their masterpieces "DESCENDING" or "INVINCIBLE" or not .... long tracks and track seems to be the wrong term .... epic constructions....awesome ..... worth to check out..... like your reactions btw, thx!!!
Look up the Fibonacci Sequence and TOOL. I think this is the song that follows it
🐙=🐐
