The time signatures of the measures: 9/8, 8/8, 7/8 don't feel clunky because they add up to 24/8, which is divisible by 4. So underneath it all, it can be broken down to a 4/8 feel. 👍🏽🌀

Hahaha I love how "Overthinking overanalyzing seperates the body from the mind" cought you in moment when you were doing that exactly. Once you "brake the code" of numbers, sintax and semantics of this song you will be sucked in spiral and enjoy the sway. Every time you listen to it gets better, trust me.

the Fibonacci sequence is represented in nature by the golden ratio. (Nautilus shells, the spiral of our galaxy, the proportions of your face, etc) it’s a spiral. At the last section of the song did you hear the bass mimicking a spiral when it was making that warbling sound, AS Maynard was literally saying SPIRAL OUT? It’s why your head started bobbing in a spiral pattern. I love it! Spiral Out! 🌀

Maynard has said that was the whole intention behind the lyrics: don't overthink it or you lose yourself in the minutiae. The Tool army tends to be very pretentious in this regard, and he has been quoted as saying that they often get on his nerves because of that fact. I say this as a 25 year long Tool fan who also plays in progressive metal bands myself.

Lots of cool stuff here. Yes you read right about moving in the versions of 8 with instruments, and maynards voice instrument also ascends and descends fib with his syllable counts. And the outro and overall message of riding the spirals out farther and farther pull from the finonacci when drawn out into the golden spiral (sea shells to galaxies). Cool on so many levels!

Hearing you learning about the song ahead of time before you go into it. I think you're gonna love it, but as far as Tool messing around with Time signatures, THIS is the song that is purposefully genius. Most of their other songs that switch up the time signatures is less manipulated, but still just as amazing.

Not only do the lyrics follow the sequence. Also the time changes , The drums and the style changes in the song all follow the sequence in some way.The title track, "Lateralus", incorporates the Fibonacci sequence.[29] The theme of the song describes the desire of humans to explore and to expand for more knowledge and a deeper understanding of everything. The lyrics "spiral out" refer to this desire and also to the Fibonacci spiral, which is formed by creating and arranging squares for each number in the sequence's 1,1,2,3,5,8,... pattern, and drawing a curve that connects to two corners of each square. This would, allowed to continue onwards, theoretically create a never-ending and infinitely expanding spiral. Related to this, the song's main theme features successive time signatures 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8.[30] The number 987 is the sixteenth integer of the Fibonacci sequence.

Where is one that will blow your mind... The colours named are deliberate. It was first noted by a guy called William Gladstone, who noted while reading Homer's Odyssey that the colour Blue is never named once. He tallied up all the colours named and the number of times they are used and the top 4 colours were black, white, red and yellow in that order. Then some bright spark took that idea and expanded it to pretty much every culture of that time period and the same thing, with those 4 colours being the top 4 colours named. So it's a multi layered message with this song with it being said that those 4 colours are from the infancy of humanity, and it's believed to be the order of colour we see after birth.
