Spring is not for everyone. For some, the flamboyant blue spires emerging among the roadside crabgrass promise nothing but itchy eyes and runny noses. But this one feels a little different, even for those who scowl at every shock of pink verbena and other preludes for allergenic misery. Perhaps two brutal winters and extended social dormancy can make anyone appreciate this time of year.
With the first flowers also arrived our first live broadcast from Studio 1A in over two years with Daniel Rossen. The Department of Eagles and Grizzly Bear member ended his live performance hibernation (sorry, I couldn’t resist the obvious metaphor) as well, confessing to our Concert Club members they were the first people he had performed in front of in over three years! Although we would not have been able to tell if he hadn’t said anything after he enraptured us with beautifully played songs from his debut solo record, You Belong There out this Friday, April 8th via Warp records. The melodies felt anxious, haunted, but above all else, honest and moving as Rossen punctuated the performance with brief anecdotes about his young family, leaving them for the first time to go on tour, and navigating a new and uncertain phase of adulthood. Even the worst seasonal malcontent among us can recognize it as the perfect early spring performance, and the best performance we could have asked for to begin broadcasts from Studio 1A again.
Supposedly, allergies improve by spending time among the plants that cause them. So go touch some grass and enjoy the video below.

I love all of you who came to listen to this song
I'm not sure exactly who THIS Daniel Rossen is, but if this is the guy that was lurking in Grizzly Bear all this time, he is an earthshattering talent. This music exists on a plane outside conventional pop or rock music...This is music as ART. It should be regarded as such. I am not sure how he plays and performs all of this stuff as it is technically quite difficult (The shaking hands are quite endearing as even he seems to be a bit nervous about perfection), and how he manages to put himself through playing it WHILE singing at the same time is astonishing. For those looking for their Scott Walker replacement...In time he may even surpass him...

Yes, it took me awhile to figure out who he was. He kept popping up in bands I was liking, starting with Grizzly Bear. Then, I heard Department of Eagles and liked them, too. Check out a KZread video of Department of Eagles “In Ear Park” (Dumbo sessions). He performs with another guitarist and the guitar playing is masterful with beautiful and unusual chords. He’s definitely a talented guy.

This is ground breaking music. I feel inspired to be a better musician myself after listening to this
“Clean start, for another day..” I’ve been starting my mornings with this song for a few weeks, it’s insanely therapeutic lol. Thank you for the gift. Hearing that final “start again” really helps ground my thoughts and helps me appreciate those that are still here with us for another day. Love you all. 😊

Complex and divine, crisp voice.
His voice is beautiful. The Album is great, too. So many wow what was that moments, it will take time to process how good it is.

Didn't realize this was his first live performance in more than 3 years! Guess that would've been touring w/h Grizzly Bear's last record, i suppose. Ridiculously talented guy.
