Daniel Markovits: The Meritocracy Trap

Society tells us that we live in a meritocratic system. If you work hard you will make it, those at the top deserve their positions because they worked for it. The best person for the best job. But what if this system is fundamentally flawed? That’s what Professor Daniel Markovits believes. In this interview we will talk about the idea of the "Meritocracy Trap". According to him meritocracy is not the solution but the problem. It has resulted in an increasing gap between elites who do everything to keep their positions, while social mobility for the majority is non-existent. Meritocracy is not just failing, but its even hurting the elites themselves. That and more in this edition of Room for Discussion.

Greetings from India. I am greatly impressed with Daniel Markovits and now I have become of fan of this forum. A great discussion. Hats off to the two young students for conducting this session in a structured and animating manner - logical flow of questions. Obviously, a lot of prepration and background study of the subject went into in making this a great interview. Daniel Markovits, as usual, is very clear cut with tremendous data to support his thesis. He comes across as a very honest person and the best thing about him is that there are no ifs and buts in his replies. Incidentally, I find the issues of Meritocracy, as explained by Daniel Markovits as well as Michael Sandels, have a strong resonance in India. The anger against the privileged, which also consists of generations of top crust of dynasts, has roots in vicious hold of meritocracy elite in our country.

43 minuts in, Prof. Markovits talks about how noob retail investors are going to lose a lot of money by participating in the Gamestonk counter-attack. I just checked the stock price. It's up 3X since February 12th, 2021, the day this video interview was posted. Apes together, strong.

Daniel M: "The market doesn't value things the right way." Adam Smith (after rolling in his grave) responds by asking, "Oh Danny boy, do you suppose we select a coterie of central planners to help the market better understand how to value things?"

I just want to say School Choice is the answer for Americas Education System... Charter schools in poor communities turn out well educated young people. The big problem here are Teachers Unions...

Are you serious dude? Do you actually think UNIONS are a problem somehow? how could you possibly come to that conclusion? Unions are absolutely what we need in every field in the country. Teachers are underpaid and undervalued to a criminal degree, and unions are the ONLY way teachers are ever going to improve their situation. I would really enjoy it if you gave a concise, solid argument for why unions are bad in any way, From the perspective of regular people. Criticizing certain aspects of unions is one thing, but calling them the problem shows where your allegiance is. You, sir, are on the wrong side of history on this one. But I'm dying to hear your explanation for your backward ass ideas.

@@skahg4771 the unions do not represent their members any longer, they are corrupt politicsl machines that seek to secure their power at the expense of their members. I grew up in a union family. My mother was a union pipefitter and her father was the oldest member of the 145 pipefitters in colorodo where I still live. My aunt retired from the IBEW my Uncle, my mothers youngest brother is a union rep for the 145. I have lots of experience with what the unions have become!!!

@@thesaltyspacecowboy8531 Ok, so you didn't actually answer my question. You are right there are flaws within unions. Your personal experiences are an anecdote, while still valuable information, it's not indicative of unions as a whole. Saying teachers in your area make more than the median does not make me wrong, nor does it make what I said a lie. Teachers are underpaid everywhere, except perhaps at the tippy top of the pay scale. The median is far too low. I'm not a teacher myself but if you want quality teachers in a capitalist society, they have to be paid well for people to justify the crippling college debt and huge time investment required to become a teacher. Then coupled with how critically important teaching is, there is no reason teachers should be making as little as they do. Regardless of how much they make in your area. All of them are underpaid, everywhere. Unions are the ONLY real tool people have for effecting change in the workplace. We have pathetically few unionized fields and only a small percentage of workers are in unions. The fields that need unions the most cant get them together because of people like you poisoning the well by saying "unions are bad" without any real argument for why. Its fair for you to criticize your local unions however you want, but those criticisms should not be extended to the entire institution. Not all unions are perfect, this is true. Nothing is perfect. but in a world where almost every industry is dominated by huge corporations with huge reserves of money, the only way to fight them is by banding together. Unions are unequivocally the best way of fighting the corporate oligarchy that is slowly taking over america. Do you oppose all unions or just the ones you've had to deal with? I'm curious where your opinion is coming from. Even tho I think you are incredibly wrong about unions, I can understand how people could get to that point. But unions really are one of our best hopes for getting out from under the corporate boot.

@@skahg4771 so how about we end Government intervention in education? Like seriously the department of education is a direct usurpation of States Power. Education is not the duty of the federal government. Guaranteeing college loans is why college graduates are left with substantial debt. And no government employee should earn more than the median income in their community. The government should not ever be the largest employer in the nation. They, the government, PRODUCE NOTHING OF VALUE... And should only employ the absolute minumum to do their constitutioal duty and THATS IT. My LIBERTY IS NOT FOR SALE AT ANY PRICE OR COMFORT LEVEL!!!!
