Securing Peace, Ensuring Power - with NATO’s Chair of the Military Committee Admiral Rob Bauer

Statement:
Today Room for Discussion was set to hold an hour-long interview with Admiral Rob Bauer, Chief of NATO's Military Committee. The interview was meant to cover the state of the war in Ukraine, NATO's challenges with coordination with members and the ideals and values that the allied defence organisation protects. About five minutes into the interview, protests started disrupting the interview by chanting statements at the Admiral and our interview platform, leading to the interview becoming inaudible. We then made a public statement emphasising the importance of discussion and dialogue, pleading with the protesters to discuss a potential compromise, so that the audience of more than 150 people would be able to continue listening to the interview. The protesters continued to assert that they would not let the interview go through.
The organisers considered options for continuing the interview in a lecture hall or via a livestream but due to security considerations these options were not a possibility. The interview was instead recorded in a private room. The interview will be available by tomorrow on our KZread channel.
The whole Room for Discussion team deeply regrets how the events played out today and we express profound sadness over the loss of our opportunity to hold important, critical public discus-sions. After the interview, we approached the protesters to inquire how we could find a compromise for their presence and hold interviews with guests they disagreed with, they said there would be no way for them to not disrupt interviews with guests they disagreed with. This is a detrimental loss for our platform, where we interview a diverse range of guests with different political views, roles, and backgrounds. We did our very best in preparing this interview, and it is our sincere belief that it would have contributed to the current public discussion.
Finally, we would like to thank Admiral Bauer and his team for their flexibility and support.
Sincerely,
The Room for Discussion Committee

War is back on the European Continent. Our safety and security are no longer a certainty. According to the United Nations, a new era of conflict has begun. For NATO that means: a new era of collective defence.
On March 26th, we will have Chair of the NATO Military Committee (CMC) Admiral Rob Bauer joining us for a frank conversation on stage. Recently, Admiral Bauer has called for a more “war-ready society”. What will that mean for our daily lives? How will NATO continue to deter aggression from Russia? What actions do governments and companies need to take to ensure our war readiness?

Shame on the protestors for disrupting an interview in so narrow-mindedly a fashion

Shows how desperate they are for an audience when they have to capture another's.

The last two years have proven yet again that a strong military with allies is the best deterrent, when diplomatic efforts make it clear, aggressive actions will result in immediate firm response. Listen to his last statement! Rules based international order must be maintained through diplomacy backed up by strength.

This is a military strategist and tactician who goes to great lengths to explain these concepts to others within our democracies. Protestors need to listen louder, especially when politely offered the opportunity to participate positively in the discussion😢, they lessen their potential influence by refusing to do so and forcing this public interview/discussion private😢. They forget the difference of attempting to protest in Russia, China, and other autocratic regimes would have quite a different reaction. This makes All the Difference!

Interesting interview, thank you for organizing it. Very unfortunate of the protesters. Their behavior was very disrespectful to not only the speaker, but also to the hardworking team, the other students who wanted to learn, and the university. They may have held legitimate points, but this kind of behavior is very childish and will probably not get them far in their goals. They should have been kindly escorted away within due time. I am suprised there were no guards around (seemingly) for such an important figure from a controversial organization.

Takk fyrir mjög fagleg vinnubrögð (Icelandic) Thank you for one of the most provocative sessions I have witness. The meeting managers get 10 out of 10 and Admiral Bauer, you have been one of the best representative of NATO with Mr.Stoltenberg NATO Secretary General (Noth star - quoted from Mr. Baurer). Nato should maintain the recruitment relationship with them until the Ukranu war is over. In war you need sometime to bend the tradichion. Stay all safe, from Iceland

Such an interesting interview, with such a knowledgeable person. Thank you! The protestors just proved how uneducated they are by not even respecting the pluralism of opinions, or the provided opportunity for a constructive dialogue.

So they did the same as the organizers of the event. There was no room for critical questions or a discussion. Just pure NATO-propaganda like we hear and see on mainstream media on a daily basis.

Here is my idea of how to end the Russia-Ukraine in 1-2 years. First, Ukraine ought to mobilize one additional million soldiers, 500 thousand of which are dedicated to infantry soldiers for fighting in trenches, the rest is used for rotation of the frontline combat soldiers, and when the Ukrainian armed forces can retake all of the territory back including Crimea, then NATO can officially declare accepting Ukraine's expedited application for joining NATO Alliance. The Ratification should start right away shortly after so that NATO can move its troops into Ukraine to guard all of Ukraine's borders.

Maybe a good idea to edit the snouting admiral out at 33:00 minutes and 35:20 minutes?

First, I agree that dialogue is important and that these interviews should take place and not be disrupted. However, I am a bit surprised by how this interview unfolded. I clicked on this interview because social media and the dutch news posted about how these "protestors" (although your official statement do not name what they stood for), disrupted a constructive dialogue. For how much room this protest took in your statements, linkedin, description of the video etc, no critical questions were asked to Admiral Bauer. This would have been a great opportunity to engage with the critiques of NATO and in this sense actually prove to the audience that important questions are being asked. Aside from not engaging with the critiques from protestors and scholars (and instead labelling everything as being either for or against NATO) there were multiple opportunities in the interview to ask more fundamental questions. For example, Admiral Bauer mentioned the history and mistakes of NATO, or the fact that the economy needs to prioritise warfare, but no follow up question were asked regarding these points. Instead, we hear Admiral Bauer nearly only talk about what we need to enhance NATOs operational capabilities, rather than how NATO positions themselves in a complex and changing world where there increasing natural disasters and conflicts due to climate change, their emissions, ethical weapons and broader consequences of militarisation.
