Daniel Hannan's last Brexit speech in the European Parliament

Our Vice-Chair Daniel Hannan making his last speech for our Group on Brexit shortly before the European Parliament voted to approve the UK Withdrawal Agreement from the EU. He puts it well on why the UK ended up voting to leave and also highlights many of the reasons why others share those concerns as well.
As sad as we are to see him and all our Conservative MEPs go, we are looking forward to friendship and the future.

    Speaking the truth with such conviction. What a marvellous spokesperson for the UK this gentleman is. I never tire of listening to him, his ability to speak so eloquently in any setting is astonishing. Nobody can wrong foot him because he is so well educated in so many areas. Bravo.

    @@ScandinavianHeretic For one thing, he conveniently overlooked that David Cameron in February 2016 negotiations, gained the concession that the UK would be excused further involvement in 'ever closer union'. Also he omits that there have been Eurosceptics on the right of the Conservative Party (his natural political home in the UK) since the 1970s. Indeed Bill Cash, one of the OG still sits in the HoC and has been a prominent campaigner for a hard Brexit. He is part of the European Research Group which exists to campaign for Brexit. He and colleagues were a very large thorn in John Major's side as he tried to promote the Maastricht Treaty to the HoC. Major infamously referred to them as 'The Bastards'.

    @@desmondroberts6034 I don't see how any of that makes him a bullshitter. He made it very clear in this speech that he is and was opposed to the Maastricht Treaty. That's his stance that he is allowed to take, just as he is allowed to be a part of the ERG and be a thorn in the side of John Major. He argued against the Maastricht Treaty than and maintains that stance. None of that makes him a bullshitter. You can't call someone a liar just because you don't agree with them.

    Interesting argument. If it wasn't for the fact that the Maastricht Treaty carries the signatures of UK - that makes UK a founding member of the EU - that UK was granted a number of opt-outs (anyone mentioned currency?), that UK was not part of the Schengen area so it could have imposed stricter border checks, that only 2% of the EU laws were voted against by the UK, etc.

  • @davidalanroden

    @davidalanroden

    It carried the signature of the then Prime Minister John Major, who did so without bothering to consult the people of the UK. He did not bother to consult the people because he knew what they would say - and it wasn't the answer he wanted, as he's an eu fanatic. In fact he lost the argument in the parliament, and forced his will by threatening a vote of no confidence, which could have ended in an election - which many conservative MPs would have lost their seats. A signature is worthless, if it carries no mandate.

    @@lacommission.-sitcom696 That is the EU playing silly beggars. 20% of all European Red tape is focused on NI because the EU WANTS to make it difficult. They are playing games with peace in NI and expecting the UK to accept being divided, which goes against the protocol which states that UKs sovereignty and integrity as a nation should NOT be compromised and which is why A16 was included. The EU knows this but they know they have the Remainstream media and most of our own establishment on side so they can pump out whatever crap they like about ‘breaking the law’ knowing it will be believed. As Henry Kissinger said recently the EU is treating the UK like ‘an escaped prisoner’ it thinks it can bring to heel. This is exactly why leaving was necessary.
