Everything is surreal, like in a dream, or a fairy-tale. Pina Bausch's "Orpheus and Eurydice" is a total enjoyment and a living example of aesthetics. Brilliant dancers from the Ballet de L'Opéra National de Paris toss around in graceful, fluid movements, in a dreamlike setting to a beautiful piece of music, which altogether underpin her breathtaking choreography.

When I was watching a production by the Portland Opera and listening to this exquisite music, it occurred to me that Orfeo was incredibly selfish to want Eurydice back on Earth given where she was in the Afterlife. Wouldn't anyone want to be among the Blessed Spirits if given the opportunity?

This piece, The Dance of the Blessed Spirits, is always, whenever I come back to view it once again, so satisfying yet moving -- within a deep spiritual dimension. If I recall correctly, Pina Bausch studied in New York City at the Martha Graham school on East 63 St. It was in the late '50's. At that time, I was working in the Registrar's Office, helping out Geordie Graham, Martha's younger sister. I remember Ms. Bausch's name among the list of students from that time: Pina being an unusual name, even in old New York City. As I view this piece I think it is ironic, that a choreographer as gifted as Ms. Bausch who has choreographically put her finger on the truth of the mythic Orfeo, whereas the great Graham, in what ought to have been her most insightful in her old age was, instead, fooling around with the likes of Maple Leaf Rag. It was not for nothing that the Greeks formed an entire mystery school around the Orphic Mysteries, the men's religion. Martha ought to have been working on exploring the mysteries of Orfeo. But she went in the wrong direction. Don't get me wrong, Scott Joplin's ragtime is heavenly. And Maple Leaf Rag is one his great achievements. But Gluck is better. And Pina Bausch is better.

Very beautiful moves which match the music's drive to evoke a mood of some deeply emotional yet blissful spiritual state. A state beyond words. I do wish however, that Ms. Bausch had been moved to use the men more. Here they are employed as mere porter's to transport the women from place to place. But come on! Men also have their own deeply felt expressions of purity of soul; Men also are blessed and are capable of bestowing blessing. Ms. Bausch seems to say "I don't know about that. I only know about how women feel." But that's a cop out. After all, Gluck was a man -- and his music evokes a mystical sense of angelic prayer -- for lack of a better word -- though it does stay down in the underworld. As an artist, Bausch needs to dig deeper. And find the sense of male/female relationship which speaks of the transcendent wholeness that is missing here..

I this a joke! You need to take a course in Dance history if you're questioning Pina Bausch's genious. Please say you don't understand the work, NOT say she was not a genius. She is the MOTHER of Tanztheater..... Looking at her work from a "classical" eye will do you a GREAT disservice.. Not all dance is BALLET and BALLET based......LOL and even THAT is foolish to say about her!!!! her work is deeply rooted in Martha/Cunningham/Ballet/Laban/Wigman/Joss.....!!!
