People always want to portray themselves as this, that or the other, not Dana. Dana is Dana. No surprise he pays for all his shoes and never asks anyone for anything. Why would he? There is a case for UFC to consider a more commercial model of management as it aims to maximize profits instead of giving priority to athletic performance. As it is the case with all non Olympic sports you can not always rely on ranking as they are often based on disparate considerations. There is no doubt you get the best brawlers on the globe in the octagone only the title isn't always fought for and awarded in the orderly fashion. Which sometimes makes it tricky to identify and support the champion distinguish betwixt challengers and mandatory contenders.

90% of the UFC fighters are UNKNOWN and nobody would pay to see them to fight. The job of the UFC is to promote these unknown fighters and make them into household names. When these fighters get wins and popularity, then they start making big bucks. The $12k is just starting pay, not the end pay. Also, you are not considering the fight bonuses!
