Greatest QB to ever play the game, bar none.

I will never forget watching this guy in 1979 as an 18 year old freshman. He had an NFL caliber arm then! During his 4 years on campus Pitt went 42-6! Glory days of Pitt football....1975 thru 1982.

Just watching this now, that QB class of 1983, ( of which Marino was part of) will probably never be duplicated. John Elway and Jim Kelly were also #1 picks, they also turned out pretty good( actually, outstanding) feel bad that Jim Kelly never got a SB ring after 4 tries. John Elway 5 trips and two rings, Marino, only once( hard to believe) with that arm he had and the accuracy.

That release is insane.

The feet, the legs, the arm. The Fire and passion.

I loved College Football growing up in the 70’s and 80’s…..Marino was Magnificent ‼️

Even at 18 he was wowing people with his release. Also check out how athletic he was before all the knee surgeries and torn Achilles.

That’s what really irritates me when people criticize the leg dive rule nowadays or compare some unathletic tall qb to Marino. He was an insanely good athlete, so quick on his feet, able to reset his feet while on the run and deliver with ease. Ten years of cheap shot hits that are now illegal robbed him of that athleticism.

Man, did Marino ever had a rocket for an even as a college freshman. He whipped that ball to his receivers with pinpoint accuracy back then.

My first two years at Central Catholic Danny was the quarterback, and you just could tell then this kid had a fantastic future ahead of him.... the question was, was he going to be in the NFL or pitch for the Kansas City Royals... I'm so glad he chose the NFL, and I am still pissed off that the Steelers did not draft him when they picked their first-round in 1984.

My dad and uncle were at that FSU game ..went to FSU .that game marinoput a clinic on display...they said the whole FSU crowd had to give him props...and agreed he is going to be great...tall most accurate fast gun ever ..release .. foot motion dropping back...throws running with or especially against the rush like it's nothing...just able to make average receivers be great ..cause he places that damn ball right in your hands...he had best present of mind...rifle it...lob it... up and outs...down and ins,.... bombs... WHATEVER

He came up through college in an era where the quarterback worked almost exclusively under center. I'm sure his poise and passing ability had the attention of pro scouts even before his freshman year was over. Just starting as a D-I freshman would spark pro interest.

Bradshaw retired in late '83 after his injury - I wonder if he expected to stay on longer - and this may have steered the Steelers from wanting Marino. He told my late father in' 88 (while signing autographs at our local Giant Auto parts) that he would've played longer if not for his injury. He was 35 when he retired.

I saw him play in college on TV. I think he threw 7 completions in a row. I thought he was awesome.

Wow these first sets of highlights are awesome. Made even better by Al Michaels, Charlie Jones, and Len Dawson announcing. Oh and now I hear Jim Simpson lol....These throws are amazing.

Yeah Marino with the Steelers could have been magical he would have won multiple superbowl rings then there wouldn't be no debate about Marino being the greatest quarterback ever. I mean in the afc championship game he lit the Steelers up. Just bad luck to have to play a loaded niners team in basically a home game for them in the superbowl. I mean the niners were so loaded steve young comes in replaced Montana he wins superbowl mvp when he was with Tampa bay young was a horrible quarterback joins a loaded niners team looks like a all American that just shows you teams win superbowls. Proving at his skill position dan Marino is the greatest quarterback ever.

Yeah I think ur right that Cliff Stout mark Malone Bubby Brister and Niel O'DONNELL and Kordell thing was way better add in some Mike Tomzak and Kent Graham......the only thing missing was a really good quarterback in that time that was....Chuck Noll taking Mark Malone and company to the afc championship game against Marino and the Dolphins that was Chuck Noll Taking Bubby Brister to that afc championship against John Elway.....had Dan Marino been with the Steelers at least 2 maybe 3ore rings were possible

@Jesse LeBlanc food for thought, from 1980 until.1991, the Steelers regular season record was 93-91, they won 10 games in a season...ONCE, they were a mediocre team at best, if you honesty.think that Dan Marino would have led them to multiple Titles you're just a tad naive

Those teams between 1980 and 1991 won more playoffs games than the Steelers of the last 10 Years and were in more afc championship games .....without a quarterback.....and no team in NFL history has averaged given up45 points a game like we have the last 3 playoff appearances in those appearances we went into those games leading the league in sacks ....within those three losses we made a couple quarterbacks look like hall of famers that are just average at best......with Mark Malone and Bubby Brister we were stil More complete of a team because we had Leaders smart enough to know it don't matter who you have at the skill positions if the offensive and defensive lines are not dominant......look back at how those teams played in the playoffs only one game I would say was not an all out performance....and that's in the afc championship game against Marino as he destroyed our defense....

Marino finished his four college seasons with 8,597 passing yards and 79 touchdowns, with 69 interceptions. this was before my time - can someone explain the td to int ratio? anyone know if that's correct?

Not sure, but back then in the NFL a very good, low throwing INT QB would barely have a 2:1 ratio. Gunslinger types often threw more INTS than TDs. Like Namath...

Yep. Incredibly at this time the administration was getting uncomfortable with winning and being known for football over academics. Sherrill knew what was coming when Bozik became AD and bolted. Now with NIL, it will be even harder for Pitt to win and the school will still be OK with it because it has ACC checks rolling in to subsidize the Olympic sports.

I am still wondering why the Steelers did not pick him up.

It's one of the nfl greatest tragedies I mean you have quarterbacks like trent differ and Brad Johnson who win a superbowl but you have the greatest quarterback ever in Dan Marino who has a cannon for a right arm put the ball in places other quarterbacks can only dream of and Brady is included in that list. But Marino gets marginalized as a quarterback that never won the super bowl. Instead of the greatest quarterback the NFL had an still hasn't seen since he retired. What quarterback could have put up the numbers Marino did when the defense knew you were gonna throw the ball because you had no running game I mean people forget teams win super bowls you take Steve young he played with the Tampa bay Buccaneers they were awful and he sucked he goes to a all pro niners team and wins super bowl mvp go figure. Marino was a super star on a bad team I mean you're telling me that a quarterback that sucked on a bad team like Steve young did and goes to a all pro team like the niners and wins the super bowl you don't think Marino could have did that to.

What you guys are leaving out is that the Pitt Panthers had a team wide cocaine problem and so a lot of those guys were looked at as huge risks. Pittsburgh was running a very dirty program at that time. Truth be told Dan Marino probably indulged in a lot of the things that the other players were doing.
