I used to play this at home with my parents. Even just moving the pieces around was super satisfying - I loved the sensation of holding them, cool and smooth, and the sounds they made as they clattered into the little bins.

Mine wasn't even "indoor recess." The playground was still a work in progress so we had recess in the neighboring church's yard for months. Choices were kick a ball around (but not hard so it wouldn't go into the street) or easy to transport board games on picnic tables.

literally every move arin made in the first game was the wrong move. That's beyond impressive.

Fair criticism but I do find the serendipity of finding out about capture, very fun

I distinctly remember Arin saying in a monopoly episode that he is amazing at board games when played in real life. I therefore suggest they submit to playing all of these games in real life to see just how valid this claim to be is. And if it's not... _if it's not..._ the title of Mr. Business can never, ever, _ever_ be recanted, and the title of the Video Game Boy is hanging by a thread.

@@RatQueen03 same thing for me in chess in 2 special moves (i don't know he names) 1. You can swap the position of your king and rook if nothing is in the way and your king has not mived in that game yet. 2. If an opponents pawn walks its' beginning 2 steps past your pawn (and is standing right beside yours now) you can move your pawn diagonally behind his and kill his (as though stabbing it in the back?) But nobody knew, and I only knew because I played chess against a computer at home.

I thought i was the only one like “this is not at all how i ever played it” We did it where you pick up all the marbles in one hole then drop one in each of the next holes until you have no more, but the one you end on, you take those and do the same thing. You drop one in your goal whenever you pass by it. And repeat.

Because mancala is a family of games, not one game, similar to cards or dominoes.

My favorite part of the Clubhouse 51 episodes is the contemplative lulls, broken only by gentle scatting.

Where I'm from, we call Mancala "Sungka" (soong-kah) with a longer board (7 slots) with I think seven pieces in every slot. It is quite the flex when your store literally overflows with pieces

I love mancala! I played it with my sister when I was young, but the rules we played with were different I guess. There was no "capture" or whatever and your turn kept going even after you dropped your last marble. If there are marbles in the spot where you drop your last marbles, you pick them all up and keep going until you land in a spot with no marbles. So if you start with one marble and drop it into the next spot that had two marbles, you pick them up and move three more spots. This makes planning ahead and counting the marbles very important. I prefer my way haha, but still cool to see the Grumps play it!

When that "Capture" rolled up on the screen, that opened up my mind to this game. Super awesome game!

Oh my god I loved this game as a kid, seeing the grumps play a game that you dearly love and have fun doing is kind of like watching your future kids doing the same thing, and the cursing makes it 50 times better

The sheer contrast between Dan's soft voice and Arin's banshee scream 🤣 2:07 "Lay down, good girl~" 24:25 *GASP* "NNNNOO00O0O00OoOOooo!!"

I seriously also want to own a lavish house and have a "game table", a circular wooden table with different drawers for storing different games inside it. I've never seen Mancala before but my magpie senses are tingling.

In some places I've seen a table EXCLUSIVELY built for mancala. Like it's a low table with holes Imagine living so good that you have a table with holes that can play only one game.

wow. its really interesting seeing this game played outside of my family. the rules about capturing and only being able to pick from your own side were never a thing. the middle pockets were fair game, you just had to start your turn on your side, and as long as there were seeds where your hand ended you could pick them up and keep going. so during the beginning of the game turns would last forever. especially if you had the good maths and ended your hand in your store pocket.

I played with a mix of both--anything that landed on your side you could keep going, capturing was a thing, but landing in your own pocket was just safe and didn't give any extra moves.

The lack of times in adult life you get to scoop up a handful of mancala gems was not something I was prepared for

MancalaGuru68 here. I couldn't help but notice that Arin (during the first round) used the ancient Zimbabwe strategy of "90 mikova nyundo dong" where the person plays the game correctly and gets absolutely destroyed by the opponent. However, little did Dan know that that was his true intentions.

Every time dan goes “boop, boop, boop” in that silly voice, for some reason i keep thinking of the song Mr. sandman, the one sung by the quartet girls and now i have it stuck in my head. Thankfully i reall love that song.

Awe, I used to play this all the time with ny sister when we went to our grandma's. I always loved the feel and sound of the marbles.

0:50 dan has it right!, these games may seem simplistic, but that is part of the charm. most of these are quite relaxing to watch, in addition to you boy commentary sets it in stone!

It's also the wrong intro. I assume they have a custom template project in their video editor and they forgot to swap and mix the intro.

@Roger Dodger I actually disagree, but I felt the same way about every episode Ninja Brian was in, so I get it. Maybe it's just because Arin and Suzy together remind me of my wife and I, but she gets a lot of hate for just. . . existing. I would like to at least see Date Grumps come back on Valentine's Day.

1/12/2022 and this is still one of my favorite club 51 games they played. Just occupies a special place in my heart cause of stuff going on in life around the time this aired.

I swear, everyone I meet plays mancala differently. I remember downloading an app with one of my friends and when the game started we couldn't figure out what was going on and deleted it. I assume everyone just has their own rules.

In school we played a version where the goal was to clear your side off first, with your turn ending if you landed in an empty spot and getting a free turn if you landed in the big trough thingy. It was a solved game though at 4 pieces; there was a chain of moves that would allow you to beat the game in one turn.

Dan is way too relaxed. He's starting to forget grammar😄 "...playing these games are..."

Mancala is a game that I used to play all the time as a kid with my sister. I'm super stoked that they put it in Clubhouse 51 and I'm extremely happy how quickly the Grumps learned how to play one of my favorite tabletop games.

The desire to see patterns completed is not necessarily an OCD thing, it's just a normal human thought process. Obsessively thinking about an incomplete pattern and/or compulsively trying to "fix" a pattern is OCD. Something that very few people legit have and I'm willing to bet 99.5% of people claiming to have it on social media don't actually have it.

this is my fave game youve played so far on clubhouse 51, something about the pretty beads and the sounds they make are satisfying to watch. very relaxing!

I don't have any idea what's going on, but I like watching the pretty stones go round the board.

This honestly looks like such a fun game

The intro was subtler than normal... I needed that today, like a nice little reminder that we all need to quiet down a bit... (I take that as we all need to take our time to relax and take a break)

I used to always play this game with my mom all the time and this brought me back to those good memories. Thank you guys for that. Hope you guys enjoy the rest of gaming.
