My dad was working in China in 2009 - one day, while on the subway, a Russian walked up to my dad and while pointing at his Hawkeye cap he said “Dan Gable”...I think that was 37 years after Gable had beaten “Russia’s best” - running through the Olympics without a point scored on him - even years after Gable became the greatest coach EVER. For those who know, LEGEND. Around the world.

I was in Gable's wrestling camp with the Olympic team in the mid 90s. That camp allowed me to immerse myself in the teachings of some of the best wrestlers to come out of Hawkeye country. I was volunteering every day for everything they wanted to show us. That time was when a switch happened in my mentality towards wrestling. Hearing Olympic gold medal winners telling me that I was good and strong for my size, it totally changed me for the better coming out of that camp. I can never thank my parents and coaches enough for taking me there. One day during camp, the Olympic guys were having a morning practice and one showed up late. I watched Gable tear this kid's ass apart for what seemed like forever. He was not getting away from him, and Gable had just had another surgery prior to camp. That just showed us how much of a badass that man was even then. Fast forward to the end of the camp and our coach tells us that we're going to Dan Gable's house in the evening. We all go there, get a tour and see a whole basement full of trophies, medals, news articles, and more along with wrestling mats in the basement (which I wanted so bad at my house.) Then in the livingroom above the mantle is Dan Gable's Olympic Gold Medal. One of our teammates who will remain nameless, goes to touch it. All of a sudden, it starts to fall. We all had fast hands from being Varsity wrestlers, but I have never seen so many hands grab that box within an inch from the nail that held it. Now at 42, I can say that was the most memorable wrestling trip that I got to experience. Remember: Whenever you start to feel tired training, think of your opponent still practicing and keep going.

@@paleo704 Totally far from it. You gotta take into consideration that person who showed up late, he deserved it. Wrestling is not a nice sport. It's grueling to the point where you do become 2 different people on and off the mat. He's a nice man off the mats, but on the mats, he's a genius general. Same goes for many people in wrestling, boxing, or MMA. It's an individual sport, and it commands respect. When you think of the story in itself, you need to take into consideration that in a grueling atmosphere, in the end, you are invited to that man's home. That's the nicest thing that you can do. It's highly respectful and it's a gentlemen move. How many people can say that they went to some sports camp with Tom Brady, Alex Rodriguez, or David Beckham and went to their home for dinner and a tour of their home? That's pretty damn nice to me.

Also the Field House was a sweat box and the dorms we stayed in had no AC.

Did you get A RED T-SHIRT were they still doing that, like 1982? I didn't have the money to go, but my best friend and sparing partner went and got the red shirt. He got so much better and taught me so much when he got back from there. He was mediocre when he went... when he got back, his intensity made me excel, he stayed in my weight class that year and got to the point in one wrestle off where I only won 8-0, but it felt so much closer... I used to pin him in wrestle offs before that, and he didn't make JV some times before camp. When he went up a weight class his senior year, he went form JC to placing in the Masters of southern California. I was not a four time state champ, or a legacy wrestler, but I did place in state in Folkstyle and freestyle for junior and senior year, and I had one very physical match in the semi finals at state my senior year, that got Jay Robinson's attention, so I got a one year (tackling dummy offer) to Iowa, with an option if I did well for more years. As it was all our dreams to wrestle in Iowa, for the great Coach Gable, in the 80s, I was tempted to take that over the other 4 year deals from various schools...but, I got my high school sweetheart pregnant, and was working by the end of the summer... I took 2nd in the regional qualifiers in the northeast at 26 years old and coach all-Americans and even wrestled in junior college at (53 years old) just before the pandemic. Wrestling taught me how to succeed anything... greatest sport in the world to learn about yourself and how to exceed all of our limited beliefs in ourselves.

The entire point of life: Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve. Mathew 20: 28. We are no different. This entire life is a representation of the spiritual warfare going on. Good vs evil. God isn't a flying man in the sky, but the actual representation of Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, Light, etc. Not metaphor, but literally, like an extra demintional wavelength of thought, emotions, and intent. The devil is the opposite wavelength, pain, fear, hate, anger, darkness, etc. Human life is serving one of these two. Not a man in the sky, actual sentient collective universal Love. However, humans are primatives, we make mistakes. It's in our nature, since the fall, to go down the wrong path. This means at some time each one of us has served darkness to some degree. God understands our limited understanding of our own actions, so he gave us forgiveness, though sacrificing himself in human form as Jesus Christ. It is our duty to accept that sacrifice, get the forgiveness, and be better, helping others be better, and spreading this wavelength of Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, Light, etc, thoughout the universe. But God had to make a way for us to get to this place spiritually, this is why evidence is not allowed. Evidence will make you believe, using the fear of absolute punishment to change your behavior, but that won't make you better, just scared. Faith makes you better. It is what redeemes us, not our works. Faith is the hope that things get better, that justice always prevails, that we're at least loved by our creator. But it has to be Faith in Jesus, because of his sacrifice. And there can't be evidence to point us to him, because Love had to be fair. If there were a code in our DNA, what about everyone born before genetic sequencing? If there were a book with the solar system thosands of years ago, what would stop an evil person from hiding/destroying it? If it were something you had to go to, what about the geographically isolated, imprisoned, or enslaved. If it were a train of logic, what about the uneducated, or mentally slow? Not to mention all the people born before schools. Love cannot give to one without giving to the other. So the key to salvation had to be something everyone has access to. The only thing is Faith. This is why God puts it upon your heart to learn about these things, even if it's only to criticize, or hate. God is everywhere, because Love is everywhere, and so is the devil, because hate is everywhere. They're in your head all the time, regardless of weather or not you accept that. They whisper inside your heart, giving you ideas. But more than that, they're inside everyone's heart. This is how they get things done. They corrordanate us like pieces on a chess board. The only difference is, we get to chose who's side we're playing for. At the end of our life, we go to that team's home base, Heaven, or Hell. A place where all that exists is those wavelengths. Hate, pain, anger, fear, darkness; or Love, Hope, Joy, Peace, Pleasure, Light. The choice is yours to make. But you cannot go to Heaven with hate in your heart. You must forgive, repent, and spread joy for those around you. These are sentient eternal controlling forces in our universe. Heaven and Hell are very real places, I've seen them. Those steps prime your soul for a meeting with God. Very literally. Once you've done all four, in that order, you get divine revelation, with all the evidence you'll ever need. They are, forgive your parents, break down before Jesus, ask for forgiveness, and read the Bible. Step four takes three books to get the revelation. I recommend Genesis, Mathew, and then either Luke, Psalms, or proverbs. The order of the steps is important, step 1 has to come before step 3. I can state that for an absolute certainty that these steps always work. Please, take your salvation seriously. See for yourself. Do those steps. Jesus Christ is Lord. It's all True

@@opcode114 "In Ken Burns' documentary Baseball, noted journalist and author Dan Okrent said Ruth was “the best lefthanded pitcher of the 1910s, without question, in the American League.” Indeed, among AL lefties with at least 1,000 IP in the decade, Ruth had the lowest ERA (2.19) and highest winning percentage (.659) while ranking fourth in wins, tied for fourth in shutouts and ninth in strikeouts. In six seasons with Ruth, the Red Sox won three World Series titles. In 107 seasons without him they have won four. Ruth is the only player since the turn of the 20th century to lead his league in Triple Crown categories as both a hitter and a pitcher and he did it in the span of three years." His home run record is even more impressive considering stadiums were much larger back then compared to the puny Stadium sizes of today..a comparison of Ryan Howard's 58 home run season showing it would equal about 30 homeruns in Yankee Stadium, when Babe Ruth was playing: "Here's Ryan Howard and his 58 dingers in 2006 according to hit tracker I have marked in red, the ones that appear would fall short of '28 YS. There are 27 out of 58 non-dingers, with four more right on the fence line. If we assume half would be dingers, that's 29 of 58, exactly 50% that wouldn't have been four sackers. Certainly not all of the 29 would have been outs. Some doubles, and even being Howard, yes, a triple or two. With outfields playing back further, more fly-outs than doubles and triples combined imo."

I grew up in Iowa. I was in junior high school when Dan was in his Senior year wrestling for Waterloo. He was a legend to all of us before he got to ISU. He inspired me and so many of us not just for wrestling skills but living life going forward. That's the reward wrestling does for you. He's the greatest athlete but even greater human being! Thanks Dan, it was a great time to be growing-up in Iowa and you never disappointed me. You taught me motivation in every aspect of LIFE.

Larry is a great man, he’s the man that spilled the ink. Met him several times here in Oregon, never met Dan Gable, but always been my all time hero. I wanted to wrestle for him so badly but unfortunately you have tremendous wrestling talent, I had tremendous dreams. I also know that Mr. Gable used to get man handled in practice by Bob Buzzard, and Bob was no joke as a coach here in Oregon. He had some amazing stories about Mr. Gable. Hopefully I will meet him one day.

I had a high school teacher who was also the wrestling coach. He only stayed at my school for one year, and must have gotten a better offer from another school, because he was an excellent coach. The heavyweight division sported the Illinois State 2nd place finisher (from my school) to Nemsky the Champion. That teacher/coach said he knew Mr. Gable, he may have even went to Iowa State around the same time. I've never forgotten him or Dan Gable.

4:01 -- I attended a clinic in NJ featuring Gable in 2003. He was in his early 50's I think at the time, maybe a touch older. The clinic was for kids, young kids through high school. I was only there watching from the bleachers with a couple of friends who were high school coaches. Before the clinic, like 20 minutes or more prior to the start, Gable was in the back of the gym warming up with the kind of intensity that most Senior level athletes don't even attempt. He was taking shots, doing jumps, slapping his arms and legs like a madman... He was really working himself into a lather. And all of it was just so he could be prepared to teach techniques and drills at a clinic for kids.

Dan Gable used to do wind sprints until he literally passed out. That gives you an idea of how hard he trained. Also, there's a story of how when he'd first gone to college he decided he'd earned a break and was drinking a beer in the student union. Somehow, his mother heard about it, when down there, and slapped him across the face.

I saw that match in a barber shop in Washburn, Iowa. My Dad, brother and I were there. The whole barber shop was watching it. No barber was cutting hair. Everyone stopped and watched it on a black and white TV up high in the corner. Everyone one was shocked and it was dead quiet after. Took a while to recover and get back to normal. You couldn't blame the ref, couldn't blame anything or anyone. He lost. Great lesson. Complacency and taking opponents for granted no matter your record can bite you and you won't see it coming

Facts. My old wrestling coach Art Ziegler was about 60 at the time this occurred. We are in the weight room one day, and the biggest football player in school walks in “Zig, I bet I could take you. You’re just too old”. Zig shot single leg, raised kid up, flipped him into trash can. Kicked trash can down and rolled it across the gym floor and said “get out of my gym”. That wresting strength and skill doesn’t go away.

I know exactly what he's talking about. I was a competitive runner. You knew if you could hear the spectators halfway through the race you weren't in it properly and probably wouldn't finish well. You never heard them or noticed them if you were in it body and mind, running your best. You can only hear/notice them if something is wrong with your focus or body preventing you from competing fully.

I know this feeling all to well. Was touted to break the state track meet mile record. It was a guarantee in everyone’s minds because I had done posted the time in multiple meets leading up to it. I didn’t practice or warm up like I usually did. Was talking to parents coaches the news. As soon as the race start it was the first time ever I felt weak tired like I didn’t have it, two minutes later I’m having a panic induced asthma attack and collapsed on the track... HUGE learning experience.
