His father lived to hear this tribute and have it become a big hit, and then soon died. Perfect timing. Poor Dan himself died much too young. He was a very kind, sweet and gentle man.

“Same Old Lang Syne” is a personal fave. I never fully understood it's weight and depth until I'd gotten a bit older and better understood the lyrics. Such an amazing tale of how it feels to suddenly be confronted with your past and how cherished and yet melancholy those memories can be. I highly recommend it.

Dan wrote this song as a tribute to his father…and like several of his songs it’s based on his own life/experiences. “Same Auld Lang Syne” another of his great hits was based upon actually bumping into his old girlfriend at a convenience store on Christmas Eve while back visit his family in Illinois for the holidays 🤍🤍🤍

One of my favorite artists. Dan Fogelberg was such a great folk rock singer songwriter & storyteller. He also played multiple instruments such as guitar, bass, piano & mandolin. I had his double album "The Innocent Age" from 1981. "Leader Of The Band" is my favorite song by him, a loving tribute to his dad. He wrote so many great songs such as "Longer", "Hard To Say", "Missing You", "Make Love Stay", "Run For The Roses", "The Language Of Love", "Believe In Me", "Same Auld Lang Syne" etc. We lost him much too soon in 2007.

Dan Fogelberg was born in Peoria, Illinois. He was the youngest of three sons born to Margaret (née Irvine), (1920-2015), a classically trained pianist, and Lawrence Peter Fogelberg, (1911-1982), a band director at Woodruff High School in Peoria, at Pekin Community High School in Pekin, and at Bradley University in Peoria. Fogelberg’s mother was a Scottish immigrant and his father was of Swedish descent. Fogelberg often related his memory of his father allowing him to "conduct" the Bradley University school band when he was only four years old. In 1981, Fogelberg released the song "Leader of the Band", which was written for and inspired by his father.

Fogelberg is SO underrated as a singer/songwriter. His lyrics tend towards poetic with wonderful imagery. He has done bluegrass; orchestral / existential angst of Netherlands; he could do rock "Power of Gold" and he could do all the seasons of love: young love "Dancing Shoes"; enduring love "longer"; Rocky relationships: "lonely in love" and Broken love of divorce "Seeing you again" and "heart hotels" then there the nostalgic love of"same old lang syne". To name just a few. Edit: He ran with some great musicians. On "souvenirs" Joe Walsh - (EAGLES) who played and produced the album Gerry Beckley -(AMERICA) Don Henley - (EAGLES) Graham Nash - (Crosby Stills and Nash) Glenn Frey - (EAGLES) The Front Line Gardenia Choir (Don Henley, Randy Meisner, Jody Boyer and Marie Ouhrabka) - choir (11)

I was fortunate enough to have seen Dan Fogelberg in concert back in the 80's. What a great show. He did so many encores, near the end, he said something like "I think I've sang enough tonight. How about y'all sing for me?" That was amazing hearing thousands of people all singing their best.

The O in his name is pronounced like the O in "photo" or like in the name Vogel. This song resonated so much with people that his dad received multiple interview requests from the media. He was a former marching band and concert band leader at multiple schools. Dan Fogelberg said that one day when he was very young, his father let him go up on stage with him and handed him a baton and let him direct the orchestra with him. He said that experience was so powerful to him that he immediately knew he wanted to be a musician. He also said that if he had only been able to write one song in his lifetime, it would be Leader of the Band without question.

Same here. ❤ I've loved this song since it came out; it hit deeper every time I'd hear it through the years. It's especially poignant and heartwrenching now, since my Daddy died in May 2021. He was a professional musician and bandleader. The year before he died, at age 88, he was awarded the Edwin Franko Goldman Bandmaster Citation. It meant the world to him, although he'd be the first to tell you, he didn't do it for the awards or money or acclaim...he did it because he loved passing on his love of music to future generations! He worked with professional and military bands, college bands, and even many high school and junior high school bands; and treated them all the same. He loved everybody and everybody loved him. He was the leader of the band if there ever was one. 🎶❤🎶 I miss you Daddy!

Dan Fogelberg is amazing. Thank you so much for taking the time to react to him. I think one of his best songs is seeing you again. I hope you listen to that❤

Dan Fogelberg grew up in a neighboring county. Beautiful voice with well-written harmonies. This was written for his dad, who was a high school Band teacher, if I remember correctly. Could we have some more, please.

Just a little nitpick. The O in Fogelberg is a long O, like the o in so. He was a large part of the soundtrack to my college years. Was lucky enough to see him twice...once with a full electric band and once acoustic...just him with an acoustic guitar and a grand piano. Definitely one of my favorite artists.

I agree Dan Fogelberg is much underrated. Well worth digging deeper.

I used the words from Dan’s song in a tribute to my husband after he passed way because it said everything that needed to be said about him and his life.

I love Dan. My favourite song of him is perhaps the incredible "River of souls", with its deep lirycs, and spanish flavour as it regards the music.

He wrote this as a tribute to his father who was a brass band leader, who died a couple of years later. But he did hear it before he died. A terribly emotive and beautiful song from a superb artist.

Amazing singer and song writer. Left us too soon. His song Run For The Roses is amazing. It's about the greatest race horse that ever lived, Secretariat. I was blessed enough to see him in concert.

Thank you for a Dan reaction! He was my high school sweetheart (metaphorically). Got Home Free (first album) as soon as it came out! Part of the Plan, There's a Place in the World for Gambler", Hard to Say and so many hidden gems on all his albums ("To the Morning" is one of my favorites.) Don't let the ballads fool you, his concerts rocked!

I've been playing in a guitar/vocal duet with a good friend for 33 years. We have been covering Dan Fogelberg's song, "The Reach" which is about the lives of New England's fishermen. It is a beautiful song, but my favorite DF song is "Part Of The Plan". It's not played that often anymore but all the people who lived through the 70s will remember it well. I highly recommend giving it a listen!

Everyone mentions Longer or Another Old Lang Syne. But my favorite is Run for the Roses, believe it or not a song about a horse chasing the dream of the Kentucky Derby. An amazing story as all of his are. Another more uptempo song from his duet album with Jazz Flautist Tim Weinberg is The Power of Gold from their album Twin Sons of Different Mothers.

He has a truly magical collaboration with an insanely talented flautist named Tim Weisberg called TWIN SONS FROM DIFFERENT MOTHERS. I first wore out my copy on cassette tape, then bought it again when it came out on CD, then loaded it to my MP3 player...and I still can't get enough of it. Especially the song "Since You've Asked" and "The Power of Gold"...but of course my absolute favorite song of his is "Longer"....hands down.

Since You've Asked isn't on either of the Weisberg collabs though. It isn't originally by Dan, either. It's a Judy Collins song, one of very few covers Dan ever recorded, and it is really beautiful...
