Wow. I knew it was about the Kentucky Derby but i didn't know it was a tribute to the very greatest horse ever in my book, Secretariat. It was a long drought between him and the other 2 in the 70s to American Phaoroh in 2015. To put it in perspective I was in my 20s in the 70s and and was 67 when the drought was broken. I cried when he won. It was very monumental to me to live to see it. Trust me, I was beginning to wonder. LoL

@@ANNEAVES I actually made a mistake, Secretariat was the damsire to Summer Squall, not the sire! My 60+ brain goofs up a lot..lol! When my uncle died, they had a write-up about him in "Bloodhorse." He was like a dad to me, after my dad died in '94. Uncle Cary left Baltimore to look at a horse up for auction in Kentucky, and died in a car crash on the way back home. 😞😩🙏

As an animal lover, this song always GETS me (emotionally). It also reminds me of my oldest boy, who was killed 20 years ago now ... The "with your mama beside you ..." and the fact that my oldest boy LOVED horses. We had horses when my two boys were young. My oldest boy's favorite was a horse we named "Zeke". Zeke was meant to be a family horse, but ended up being my oldest boy's horse. He took great care of him.

"The Run For The Roses" aka "The Kentucky Derby " Secretariat freaked out when they placed the big banner of roses over his whithers at the winners circle celebration, after setting the (world) track record. I believe the next race was "Run for the Black Eyed Susans", where a banner of black eyed susans were placed over his whithers, but this time it didn't bug him. I remember 2 days after my 11th birthday, my dad turned on the tv and said, "Lets see if Secretariat can win the triple crown", and he did, setting track records at all three events.

Triple crown of horse racing. Kentucky is the 1st leg 'Kentucky Derby' (roses), Maryland, 2nd leg 'Preakness' (black eyed Susans), New York is 3rd leg 'Belmont Stakes (white carnations). "Secretariat" is a good movie on the race for those three races called the Triple Crown. All three are very hard to win for that coveted title on a horse.

Secretariat raced with such heart. He won all three races in the Triple Crown and set records in all three. Those records still stand today. In the Belmont Stakes, which is a long and brutal race, he ran faster in each successive quarter mile. Other horses slow down over distance; Secretariat sped up. When he died, his funeral was broadcast on the radio; nine eulogies were delivered. He was a genuine celebrity. He is included on the list of the 100 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century, the only non-human on the list.

Back around 1981 or 82 when I was in first grade elementary school, I would hear this song early in the morning when going to school when my mother would have the stereo on WACR. Since then I haven't heard this song since till just a few weeks ago. I was trying to find out the name of the song and who actually sung it using Google audio on my phone by humming the song and realize it was the late great Dan Folgerberg and song titled Run for the Roses. It's a beautiful heart warming song with nostalgia. I'm forty-seven now so it's been many moons ago. At that time I thought it was a songg about being in love on a stormy night or something related and not much about the Kentucky derby. I was very young so.

Back in the 80's when my kids were little I often had one of his cassette tapes playing in the car, and all three of my children were knew his songs and we all sang along. One day my 4 yr.old daughter asked me what "withers" are and did she have any. I explained that the song was about horses, and that "withers" and "manes" we're parts of horses. My daughter sighed and replied, "Well! That song makes a lot more sense knowing THAT! So, yes, Harri people have been wondering about and debating the meaning of this song for a LONG time! The great horse, Secetariat, a metaphor for underdogs. His stable wasn't supposed to win. They found that his heart was larger than a typical horse which gave him more oxygen. But he was small and had the will/heart to win. His owner was a woman who gambled everything on this horse at a time when women weren't in the horseracing business. There is a great movie about this horse. And all that you said is true.
