Dan Carlin's Hardcore History 69 - Twilight of the Æsir
Фильм және анимация
This show picks up where Dan’s Thor’s Angels show left off. In the early Middle Ages Pagan Germanic-language speakers like the Vikings are a dying breed. Many of their contemporaries wish they’d die faster.

Ah, I still remember fondly when the last episode of Hardcore History came out. I listened to it with my father when I was just a boy, and he listened to the episode before that with his father before him. Someday my son will listen to the next episode with his own son.

Rewind eight years ago. I was completely blind, had lost the use of my legs, and was in incredible pain all the time. I was in the hospital ALL the time. My husband decided he didn’t want a sick wife. I was alone, with a new baby and a 6 year old and a body that wouldn’t work. Dan and his episodes were the only “outlet” I had. The only thing that brought me peace. I have always been an avid reader, and without the ability to read, Dan became my narrator…and then my only “friend”. I can not tell you the times these episodes have dragged me out of depression, soothed me to sleep (come on people…he has the BEST VOICE EVER ) entertained me, and kept me sane when the world was too much to bear. This may sound exuberant…but I do not exaggerate. Fast forward three years and after months of treatment I got half my eyesight (one eye) back , and some of my leg usage …but because I had been placed on the strongest painkillers, I was facing an addiction that was killing me. I got help, but during the nights of writhing and wanting to die, Dan yet again saved me from myself. Fast forward til today …I am walking (still one eye’d LOL) and slowly becoming a normal person again (though I’m still fighting MS) ….and through my days, Dan has been the constant that I turn to. I can probably quote all of the Celtic Holocaust (and half of most the others ) word for word 😂 I don’t know if he will ever see this, but I hope someone tells him and his team that they have saved a life. In no way an exaggeration ….I know I’m not the only one, I’m sure…..but I want Dan and his team to hear….their shows are SO MUCH MORE than entertainment. They have been my saving grace. So THANK YOU….for all you do…from the bottom of my heart. ❤

Where do I find the Thors Angels episode? I can't find it
Hi Dan. As a Norwegian who has read up on my people's history for a bit, I have the same impression as what you are theorising around the 2:38:00 mark - that the Vikings were more raiders in the west, and more traders in the East. I would even go further, as to say they were *70-75%* more raider-like in the west (and that's balancing between your estimation and my more conservative estimation) and *80-90%* more trader-friendly in the East (if violent at all). Another related point: Archeological findings prove that there were cases of friendly trade between the Vikings and the Native Americans, but there have been no findings that demonstrate any violence between the two. Also, here in Scandinavia it is a popular, commonly accepted theory, that the Vikings were especially violent towards Britain because of what Vikings interpreted as failed religious order. The same way Jesus flipped over the token-buying stalls in anger outside the temple of Jerusalem (where the temple was almost treated like Las Vegas casino for a while), the Vikings shook their heads at the hypocrisy of finance being tied in with Britain's "so-called" religious faith, which in their eyes was only used to accumulate wealth and power. So, in the Viking's eyes, this hypocritical ruling class, and the religious institutions thereof, didn't deserve such luxury, because such luxury is hypocritical in alignment with the biblical faith to begin with. The Vikings would most definitely consider this "dishonorable". Or, in other words, you might say "they took advantage of how they viewed Britain in this way". But it is also well known that the Vikings envied/needed the type of fertile land that they found on the British isles (in contrast to the difficult mountain-slope, fjord-limited strips of land in western Norway (where I'm from, and where I see this aspect as being quite evident)). It is most likely a complex mix of all these factors.
Every time one of these episodes drop it’s like running into an old friend you only see once or twice a year but every time you hang out it’s like no time has passed
This episode was not up to Dans usual standards. More of an average history lecture rather than a beautifully crafted story he usually provides. Disappointed but he’s still the GOAT

scientia carius est auro…. Dan you are a treasure, and you made my day! It’s like having a gift waiting to be unwrapped on Christmas morning as a kid…. Dan, please don’t change anything about your creation process. With you, less is SO much more 🫡🧐
Was just starting to check back in to see new content and have this beautiful new video less than a week later. Awesome.
Woohoo very happy for another episode of the best podcast ever!! Thank you for all the hard work! Its 1.45am here not sure if I should just bit sleep tonight or wait 😀
Always a highlight when a video from Dan arrives, thanks!
Extremely excited to listen to this, thank you for your amazing work Dan!
Playing non-stop for the last three days ..I guess some kind of addiction.
Always right on time with these incredible pieces
The legend Dan Carlin returns!
NO WAY! Wasn't ready for this! So exited!
DCHH is the best history podcast on the interwebs! So grateful for the amount of work that is put into these! The detail is awe inspiring. Things like this are what the interwebs was meant for- sharing knowledge. JJ South Alabama Hail the Aesir, Vanir, and Tuatha dé Danann
Wish we had more of this content, but for now I won't be greedy but I'll kick back and enjoy. Thank you for the hard work that goes into these beautiful pieces of historical exploration.

After having heard the whole Hardcore History feed again, and almost finishing Mike Duncan's french revolution again, this will keep my brain joyfully fed for another day. Thank you Dan.
