Damselflies Are Not Dragonflies

About us:
The Center for Biological Diversity is a 501c3 nonprofit headquartered in Tucson, Arizona. At the Center, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature - to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.

I've been seeing damselflies here in central cali that are so small that I can only see them when they move-- like colorful flying needles. And, they can fly directly backwards like a hummingbird. Love these guys!

It doesn't sound like a scientific explanation on their differences. Anyway, I wonder why it was named like "damsel"?

Well, the Odonata are known to date from far before the dinosaurs, in the Carboniferous period, when amphibians were the dominant large animals. Watching the damselflies over summer ponds in high country where the snow persists for over six months, we can reckon their nymphs - the underwater stage, which lasts longer than the adult reproducing stage - are pretty tough compared to tropical chimpanzee immigrants, who need heavy clothes, boots, and artificial sources of warmth. (Who said that humans adapt? No. Humans bring their climate with them, unlike all other species on earth. That's our only claim to fame.) I notice that dragonflies are also larger, and more willing to fly higher. When looking for damselflies, they pretty much fly below our knee level. Both wind and fast birds like swallows and martins.

Awesome video! I absolutely love insects, but I don't know too much about them. I see damselflies at Wekiwa Springs State Park here in Florida all the time when I'm canoeing. They often land on my toe or knee and will float down the river with me. I always thought they were dragonflies! I will share this information with others as well. Thank you!

Are you aware that the shot of damselflies mating doesn't show them mating? When they mate, they form a heart shape, called a wheel, just like the dragonflies.

...It's not incorrect to call all odonates dragonflies. Certainly damselflies and true dragonflies belong to different suborders, but I wouldn't say it's wrong to call a damselfly a dragonfly.

Dragonflies actually have several eye positions. For example, Clubtails have eyes that are widely separate like Damselflies, but the difference is that Damselflies only have one eye position which is widely separate. Dragonflies have three different eye positions, widely separate, meeting at one point, and meeting broadly along a seam. Most dragonflies have the eye position shown in this video, but there truth is there are many different eye positions, not just this one.

Short version, it's a very simple extra eye. A lot of insects have them, often in groups of 3 in a triangle. Take a look at yellowjacket wasps, they have them too!
