People use the term underrated very loosely Damon Waynans is well-known and well respected by everyone but I will say this part Damon Wayans Stand Up is very underrated he is funny as hell on the mic.

True. I always thought that Damon was way funnier than Martin but Martin was a lot more famous in the 90s. Damon had a decent movie career though.

And this was his first appearance after being fired in 1986. Edit: I'm wrong actually. He was back for the season finale to do standup.

NAH THAT WAS COMEDY GENIUS. The awkwardness is just a testament to how on point it is. Dave Chapelle has PLENTY moments like this before the punchline haha

The best joke in his monologue he was fired from SNL then he did his own comedy. Years later they were kissing his ass to host.

oh man...a number of close calls there, Damon... close calls to awkwardness, i mean. gotta remember back then SNL was still pretty much more conservative and "white" comedy territory. THAT's why i enjoyed Wayans' own In Living Color waaaayyyy more.

  • @kawaiiafangirl

idk about conservative back in the day. They are a lot more PC today than they were even in the 90s. Remember that Carlin and Pryor hosted SNL in its first season and that Kinison would be a guest host in a couple of episodes in the mid-80s. I just think w/ this particular set that Damon killed with the first portion about Black on-field reporters but his next bit or 2 wasn't as good.

Eddy Murphy was very similar in the aspect of talking about things that a predominately white audience would usually be uncomfortable and awkward but because he was more “conventionally handsome” he got away with so much more than Wayans ever could. Production wasn’t confident enough that he could bring in the black viewers that would actually relate and find his skits funny and continue watching the show. Which is exactly why he thrived on In Living Color because it was predominately black cast so he knew that audience would appreciate the skits and realness he brought.

Not just black people were used as test subjects. Also women, Jews, Indians, Irish, & the list goes on. Loved the jokes, but come on now, stop acting like only black people were treated badly. Black people owned & sold slaves too. Lots of people of many different races have been slaves. Enough with the race baiting. You don't need the WHOLE thing to be about race. Because we are ALL human, so get over it.

You can't seriously compare indentured servitude to the mass torture and mistreatment of Black Anerican slaves! This is why history needs to be told truthfully and not erased because you are uninformed. Even slaves in other countries didn't go through what Black people did in America. It WAS NOT the same. And I'm sick of the children of oppressors hollering race baiting when there are whole towns that were buried under lakes and even Central Park. Go find out how the medical field of gynecology was based on the mass torture and slaughter of female slaves. Stop complaining about people telling you about their mistreatment. The information is out there. Go find the truth, not what's comfortable for you to take in.

You say “enough with..” to a 25 year old set?! FOH you goofy gabby. Completely ignorant of you to think he’s uneducated about the plight of others, as well as to think he should speak to experiences that aren’t his own. He’s a BLACK man with, what might be unheard of in todays age but, BLACK parents. If he were any of the other races, religions, or cultures that led you to make this ignorant remark - you can be sure he would have been just as funny speaking from that perspective.
