La Battle's frock is as divine as her singing! So timeless and elegant.

How can anyone not be lifted off the ground by this melding and surging of voices...the rapture of Strauss's glorious and inspiring music gilded, ennobled and ethereally consummated by these very gifted singers.

I can't believe this my 2 favorite opera singers of all time singing together! Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Kathleen battle, I thought it was to good to be true! how legendary!

There always have been, and are, some stupendous singers out there. But there has only ever been one Kiri..........

What a glorious performance. Kiri - so effortless, understated and yet so moving.

My favorite moment in opera. Strauss's great trio is impossibly beautiful. The music, the voices, the meaningful subtext--it's profoundly moving. Beautiful performance. And no belting--apparently a requirement of today's vocal music.

Kiri looks like the Goddess that she is. All sound wonderful in this - one of the most moving scenes in operatic history. I could listen to this all day.

What a treat to listen to these 3 Great Sopranos.....

I love the way Kiri Te Kanawa sings.. I don't care what era they are dressed in. This is a concert performance and they look lovely.

I have never heard that final trade off of the final high note so perfectly song. That is what the ecstasy of a high note with three beautiful voices can do to one person.

the opening phrases by Kiri are some of the best she probably ever sang! what a glorious video to have she and Kathleen singing this together. I enjoyed Katherine, but she does is out of balance.....not oversinging, just not blending. Thanks for this beautiful gem! Wow....I heard Kiri all over and followed her to Washington to the very end of her career to hear her sing "Vanessa." :-)

25 years, and I still remember watching this performance perfectly clearly. Thanks for posting it!

Dame Kiri and Miss Battle certainly possessed beautiful instruments. Brava! Kathleen was one of the best Sophies ever . Saw her twice and she took it to heaven

I have been an opera lover since my youth and it is difficult to unequivocally say that one is my absolute favorite. Maestro Richard Karp, for 40 years the master of the Pittsburgh Opera was once asked that question. His reply, "possibly Der Rosenkavalier". I will say this..nothing in operatic literature stirs me like the final trio from this opera. The writing is insanely beautiful - the tension and release from 5:00 to 5:38 never fails to bring tears. So, don't quibble - just listen

I love Rosenkavalier despite its longeurs, but whenever I return from a trip the very first thing I put on is the Trio with Kiri. It is my Welcome Home, and I agree that nothing in operatic literature stirs me like this. From that amazing Hab Mir’s gelobt to the sublime climax, there is hardly anything like it in all opera. I only wish there were more other-worldly moments of genius in Strauss's output. When he was on, he was definitely on -- and quite often, But there is also a lot of Grade B filler music in his works.

Katherine is just great also!! she really punches the big moment creating such an emotional climax.

It's a superb addition to the Te Kanawa/Battle Arabella duet (sadly only audio) already posted on here.

And so is the incomparable Beverly Sills such a gracious host of the show! So, we have 4 stunning greats in one video clip!!! Well done and this was just too lovely!!!!!

You're absolutely right, I've been listening to it for the last two hours over and over again. I just don't get enought of it!

Aged 60. A latecomer to Strauss. Scored his songs as an music undergraduate at Liverpool. Last 4 Songs got me in 1997. Then Tod und Verklärung got me in 2008. However Rusalka, Dvořák, end of act 1 and the finale reduce me to tears. Now so does Der Rosenkavalier. Concert perfoemance in May 2014 in Birmingham at Symphony Hall. I can't wait!

I attended 2 fine Kiri te Kanawa Countesses in Le Nozze di Figaro in San Francisco in 1986, and though I have not been a massive fan over the years, this beautiful video has made me a late convert.

I agree the blending of voices here is the best on youtube its like cream and velvet together, also notice at "6:38" mark the nod Kiri gives Battle as she see's how moved battle is by the trio singing, I think they might have still had a little beef, but talent recognizes talent, and both had to admit that the other is one singing mother f*cker! LOL

I disagree: actually, I think Kathleen sounds much fresher here than in the later version with Fleming and Flika. Her voice comes out more naturally here. It's interesting how we hear differently.
