Dame Kiri has been one of my favourite sopranos since I first heard her singing. Her affinity with the German fach and Maestro Strauss' music is something innately a part of who she is and her interpretation of Maestro Strauss' music is just sublime, as is this excerpt. Listen to her Vier Letzte Lieder under the baton of Sir Georg Solti and be transported as I was.

I heard her live a few times. It was probably the most beautiful instrument I've ever heard, especially in the St. Matthew Passion in Chicago. Freni is my favorite.. so it's real when I say her instrument was the most beautiful I've heard : )

I was there and saw this back in 95. It was Dessays house debut (Fiakermili) you could barely hear her the voice was minuscule. Kiri was a curious mix of powerful high notes when she let go and delicate bits like here that you could hear just enough. She moved beautifully on stage and the overall effect of the Baritone abs her was genuine. Helga Dernesch also played her mother!

This is her greatest role. Her studio recording with Tate is her best full opera recording, the best comercially released Arabella - sublime. I find this video a bit undersung at times (no way you would have heard those whispered phrases in house), but there's no question it's beautiful and that she's absolutely in tune with the character.

It's really a duet about 'Can I be buried among the bones of your ancestors'? A token of affection in olden times, long forgotten and that shall never come again.... The sentiments of the devotees were poured out in solemn Straussian strains by dignified divas like Della Casa, Janowitz, and Kiri te Kanawa... When I hear it the music is still elevating but the sentiments are more than a tad crotchety....

I agree about the beauty of music and the lyrics. All the mentioned singers captured this masterpiece of Strauß extremely well. There is version with Anneliese Rothenberger and Hermann Prey performed for the German Television. Rothenberger was a acclaimmed opera singer but never sang Arabella but instead Zdenka. In that part you can find her with della Casa (Arabella) under Sister Act. Finally, I find that Rothenberger is 100 % in appearence and matches Arabella like no one else. Her voice radiates the warmth and compassion this aria is all about.

Perhaps the most glorious moment in Arabella--late Strauss at his most inspired. Te Kanawa was possessed with a truly beautiful voice, made for Mozart and Straiss and the more lyrical Verdi ( she made an unscheduled Met debut subbing for Stratas in a broadcast of Otello). Why she recorded Tosca, Manon Lescaut and Violetta can only have been a managerial decision of Decca. She could have been sight reading for all the drama she brought. She was clearly a "stimme" diva yet three operas that she performed were Arabella, Rosenkavalier and Capriccio revealed her lack of intimate knowledge of the language. OK Arabella can be excused but the other two require a lieder singer's ability to wed both vocal line and text.
