This is by far the best Vocalise I've ever heard. The dynamics, control and expressivenes are just stunning. Bravo!

It's Anna Moffo for me.
Some things are so beautiful they break your heart. This is one of them.
Such vocal control, such beautiful tone & expression...all embodied in this beautiful lady!
Her trills are just jaw dropping, how she does them as effortlessly as Oistrakh played the violin. It's nice to hear her singing something that is not Mozart, of which she is the master.
How can a lady stand there and give me goosebumps like this. That is a true artist.
I am crying. So beautiful. Crystal clear voice..hitting every note..feeling the music. Thank you Kiri.
A soaring beautiful, seemingly effortless work, typical of Dame Kiri. Thank you.
One of the most amazing qualities about Kiri, other than her vocal abilities, is how incredibly GRACIOUS she is! I wish every performer had her gracious attitude!
That was perfection. I can't get over how amazing this is. I don't even understand how a person could sing so flawlessly, and those trills are unbelievable... I only wish more than 26,000 could see this

Her dynamics, her beautiful legato line and incredible breath control, just the right amount of portamenti linking phrases, ALL lead to a sublime performance that few will ever match! BRAVISSIMA Dame Kiri!
La Te Kanawa in great voice doing one of my favorite pieces of all time. She's such a classic and I could never tire of hearing or seeing her. Bravissima!
The human voice as a musical instrument....amazing.
Yes, the voice is so very beautiful, but in this wordless, and seemingly endless melody, Kiri finds so many expressive nuances, and each of them is phrased with such specific musical and emotional meaning and so beautifully that the voice speaks to us as meaningfully and as directly as if there were works. She tells a story moment to moment that is so wonderful to hear.

To me, she is THE example of effortless singing…how it should be. She hardly even opens her mouth. I watch and watch, and try to learn. Just love her. … in everything she does.
Some people like a heavy vibrato, some don't. It's just a preference of taste. But for me, it adds a whole different level to this performance. Her voice is amazing, and the world is going to miss her. If I had been there, I might have cried.
What an incredible performance. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely superb. I am amazed by her ease and technique in performing this piece.

Perfection! Adorable gift from heaven.
So beautiful! Like sung by an angel. Love to watch and hear this video.
A majestic performance in every aspect: beautifully sustained lines, perfect intonation, a pure and lovely sound fitting Rachmaninov very well. And it is very hard to sing for five minutes without a text, when all that counts is the quality of the voice and the musical presentation.
It doesn't get more perfect than this.

I disagree actually, this is far from perfect especially when there seems to be a wobble in her voice. If a violinist like Izthak Perlman tried this on stage, he'd be blasted by the critics immediately. She's almost a half step off pitch with her vibrato, I would argue even Rachmaninoff wouldn't be happy with this performance when he heard Arthur Rubinstein play he even criticized the piano being out of tune on one of his recordings. I recommend checking out Anna Moffo, I'm sure Kiri Te could have sung better if she wasn't 50 years old and past her prime in this video.

***** Wow, your ear must be really...er...keen. I was going to say sharp, but that might have been misunderstood. Where specifically does she go off? I had a re-listen and, being a composer (click my name and check out my Piano Concerto No 2 in C Minor) pride myself on having a pretty good ear. But maybe I wasn't listening critically enough. And Moffo's is wonderful too, but I think she transposes it to a different key. And you're right. I'm listening to it now and it's much clearer. Moffo's may have better sonics since it's a studio recording, while Kanawa's was live. That sometimes makes a difference.

There's a live version with Ilona Domnich-Soprano, a much younger singer (in general younger singers with good technique don't have a wobble) If you wanted specific sections, like 4:41-4:45 is off. 2:00 on the release is off, 3:15 is another section. Pretty much it's a wobble when the vibrato becomes so wide that the note that's in between the bends loses it's intonation. There's a video from Franco Tenelli that explains the different kinds of vibrato and what a wobble is. I guarantee you the Ilona Domnich version is closer to how a violin or cello sounds in terms of vibrato speeds. Just listen to Jascha Heifetz or other covers of the Vocalise, the piece didn't need such a wide vibrato really. Natalie Dessay is another version to check out where the pitch isn't lost from the pitch bends. The thing is the wide vibrato and wobble eventually happens to all singers as they age.

***** Well, you've got a terrific ear and you must be a musician. 99% of the people out there and quite a few musicians would never have picked up on that. My piano is playing c#-minor and I think that is the original key but if my piano is flat then the original key is d minor. Going with C#-minor I CAN hear something happening on the (I thought) trills. But I did notice that Moffo's are a lot cleaner and I can't decide if it's the better studio equipment or Moffo is just the better singer and younger.

***** Not only off pitch, her vibrato is WAY too fast. I love Jackie's version because her vibrato resonates with my brain's idea of perfection. That's why I said she blows Dame Kiri's version away.
Absolutely wonderful... I so love 4:40 ... when her vibrato blended with that orchestral trill... This is best recording of vocalise I found through these years.
Breathtaking!! I could listen to Kiri singing Vocalise the whole day! Thanks for posting this gem! Giusi
Incredible performance! Best Vocalise on KZread without a doubt.
She had such a superb, natural, head voice -- everything was focused there -- even the low tones, which made for such beautiful sound. In my estimation, this woman was not appreciated anywhere near enough. All head voice. Sublime. It's like the best kind of singing on earth. How I wish she were around.
This is just too beautiful!
Surely this is one of the most challenging pieces ever written for a singer: nothing to "hide behind;" no "character" that takes the focus off the music. Just one person singing one syllable for 5 + minutes. Gotta be harder than singing an entire opera.
Just listened to many other videos of this and have put THIS one on my list of favs. She not only has gorgeous phrasing, but every note seems to have meaning as well. Think of the control and intellect this must take.
I am completely mesmerized by her touching performance.
I had heard Dame Kiri singing several times at the Met, including as the Countessa in "...Figaro", but I don't ever recall her singing as beautifully as she does here in this magnificently sung performance of this famous Rachmaninoff "Vocalise"
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa I choose as the best operasinger of Vocalise of Rachmaninov!

Thank you for your video:) so pur and beautiful.....
i can`t stop to say: Her voice is GORGEOUS!!!!!...
Just beautiful! I was fortunate to see Dame Kiri perform live in La Traviata at the beginning of her career. She was wonderful then and she is wonderful now. A lovely performance.
Im nothing short of OBSESSED with Dame Kiri. I think I have more of her Cds than should be allowed. She is by far my all time fav Soprano. What class she has. And that voice....its straight from the heavens!
Absolutely lovely!
Perfect ! Amazing voice and so nice person !! I love.
I might have had some doubts about whether some of the other songs you posted are really the best interpretations there are, but this song TOTALLY hooked me. Another great thing about this video is that Dame Kiri frankly looks like a model or better. Thanks!
Melancholy my old friend...
I love it. I saw her in her farewell tour in Toronto. Amazing. She even did an encore of Io son l'umile ... she's amazing.
What a great presentation of the Harvester of Sorrow's masterpiece! "What does man gain from all his labour at which he toils under the sun? " SR has always been known as a great pianist, great conductor, great composer... but never a happy person. Masterly! Lovely interpreter. Thank you.

This would not be my first choice. Do you know how to read music and play piano? I was singing long before i took voice, and music class to learn how the composer intended an also to help me learn new pieces when a pianist was unavailable to have a recording because as you well know, countless hours are spent on perfecting each song and even more spent on vocal exercises. I hope that before you are given songs for long standing vocal icons, you are taught the vital foundations for vocal strength projection resonance range falsetto your stamina and the most important part how to breathe how to stand where you focus your breath control how you start your i call it my ready note no sound but my diaphragm has already begun to contract control the airy to powerful ..hard to explain but watch masterclasses yoy cant ever be expected to perform a song such as this without preparation. I would never instruct my student to learn a song by sending them to learn via youtube videos. If you are paying or attending and have an instructor like this you could ruin your vocal chords also, your teacher might not be professional in which case has neither your best interest at heart, nor has any idea about the subject and is an imposter. Either way, look for an instructor that wants you to be the best you can and help you highlight all of your wonderful qualities. This is the beauty of singing the art is how much you convey the song by your voice. Best of luck and dont lose your passion for opera it was put in your soul for a reason. Namaste.

This piece is not for the faint of heart! And not for beginners. My biggest issues with it were "Where do I breathe?!" I found I didn't want to ruin the flow of any of the lines, so taking a breath became a real challenge. Listen where Kiri takes her breaths and try it. It takes a lot of breath control! Gorgeous piece, though, if you can do it well. (Took me two years of work!)
no words could match this beautiful..whole..
she is remarkable w/ breath control and vocal production. no cheating w/ voice mechanics. i like her strength in middle and upper register. dessy does a very nice performance, but notice her range bottoms out in several lower passages. te kanwana does well w/ "let the bright seraphim", too.
Rachmainov's music is so beautiful, but it makes me cry. Then I have to listen to Beethoven or Tchaikovsky. Classical music turns us all into manic depressives

VOCALISE Opus 34, No.14 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, song lyrics by Joel Sattler [aka Sergei Rachmaninov] New title: “Lullaby Over the Graves of the Children” Close your eyes I will sing lullaby Go to sleep Till the end of the night I will sing my heart to you So many futures died A billion tears have been cried Through the years My love will safeguard your fears I would give up my soul If I could give it for you So rest in peace Go to sleep All your dreams will come true I know that all that is good waits for you No need to be afraid Of the dark night, dear I’m here My heart will stay with you -------- Close your eyes For one last lullaby Go to sleep Through the eternal night I would give my life for you And so with God abide this ground sanctified Far away Children are hurt everyday full of hunger they pray although no one seems to hear But rest in peace Go to sleep All your sorrows have ceased tomorrow you will play In the fields of a heaven afar Among the stars, dear I’m here And I will pray for you --------------- Was there once a time When the world was kind And when the innocent were safe from our hate and crimes? So many wars Fought for who knows what for We tried but could not stop them all Although we tried, so We tried we failed and we cried And you had to pay the price We would, would have rather died than you ---------------- All that’s left of you is only this final lullaby Good night Fly away We’ll meet again come what may Till that happier day Good bye
So haunting. So beautiful. So sublime.
This must be like a warm-up for any decent soprano. I like Kiri's version the most of those I've heard.
I never missed an opportunity over the years to see Dame Kiri when she returned to Sydney. You can see here why the Kiwis worship her as a great cultural icon.
Stunningly beautiful.
I return once again... and again... and again... No words.
Beautuful...thank you..
Que preciosa cansion y maravillosa voz...
I consider myself blessed for having heard Dame Kiri live singing the Strauss Four Last Songs. She has such a gorgeous voice and such resonance. As far as the critics on this, I just want to say, can you do half as much or sound anywhere near as good as she does? Putting your two cents in doesn't cut it for me when you criticize and don't appreciate the vocal beauty that is ever present in this marvelous voice. I am so glad to have experienced her live and continue to appreciate how beautifully she sings. Some mention breathing -- I remember Nilsson once commenting to a singer who said she was having difficulty breathing, Nilsson said: "Just breathe." Besides, I'm not listening for breathing or mistakes. I'm listening to the voice.
I'm working on this one at the moment...it's SO hard. Beautiful though!
