Dalgona Whipped Coffee vs Greek Frappe: Taste Test

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Dalgona is the whipped coffee that went viral on Tik Tok. It looks like a pillow of mousse over milk. Beautiful and fairly simple to make. I had to try it and so, naturally I wanted to compare it to the classic Greek frappe. Here’s what happened…
Print this recipe here: www.dimitrasdishes.com/dalgon...
For the Dalgona Coffee:
1-2 servings:
2 tablespoons of instant coffee
2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
2 tablespoons of cold water
optional: splash of vanilla extract
ice and milk or steamed milk
optional toppings: cinnamon and/or cocoa powder
For the Frappe (1 serving):
Sweet: 1-2 teaspoons instant coffee plus 4 teaspoons sugar
medium: 1-2 teaspoons instant coffee plus 2 teaspoons sugar
plain: 1-2 teaspoons instant coffee and no sugar
ice
water
milk (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
For the Dalgona Coffee:
Combine the coffee, sugar, water, and vanilla extract in a bowl and beat together on high speed with an electric mixer until thick and glossy. Pour hot or cold milk into a glass and dollop the whipped coffee over top. Garnish with cinnamon and/or cocoa powder and serve.
For the Frappe:
Combine the coffee, sugar, and 2-3 tablespoons of cold water into a shaker and shake vigorously until a thick froth is created. Alternatively, whip the ingredients together using a milk frother or a milkshake machine.
Place some ice cubes int a tall glass and pour the froth into the glass. Fill with water and milk and serve immediately.

I have never tried the "Dalgona" coffee. Actually, I've never heard of it. Frappe reminds me of Greece. I love it. Did you know that "Frappe" is a French word? It means "Beaten" . It's not every day that the Greek vocabulary borrows a French word. Usually it's the other way around.

You'd be surprised... plenty of French words are in common use instead of the Greek ones. Elevators and several car parts are prime examples of that.

Well said. Greeks has incorporated quite a few French words and nouns in their vocabulary. The most common ones that come to mind is rendez vous and collier. The first is widely used in Greece.

Greek/7slander here and never liked frappe (fast food coffee culture of...χαλαρά). I drink greek coffee. It is not everyday that greek borrows french words anymore, but everyday it borrows from english (hopefully french does not do that)

Greek here, some fun facts about Frappe. When you drink frappe in Greece, you NEVER drink the foam, as it is known to taste bad. Most of the time, you make foam, and use it like a "coffee storage". So you drink the "foamless" part first, and then by adding cold water or milk again, you just get more coffee. I haven't had the Dolgona coffee, but just drinking the foam part... it just seems so weird to me.

  • @harrodsfan

    @harrodsfan

Another Greek here from Greece, specifically from Piraeus. Personally, I like to drink the foam so that's what I do first and then the coffee liquid so it has enough time to get integrated. Matter of taste....of course :)

I remember drinking my first frappe long time ago in Heraklion, Crete. It was that time on a steaming hot day when nobody was around but my friend and me, we were waiting for a bus that would take us to a all-inclusive hotel at south-eastern part of the island (just a side note, that was my first and also the last experience with all-inclusive holiday, I found out that I am just not cut out to be barbecued on sun by the pool without any adventure, secluded from locals and their life). In a small bar just few meters from the main street, tucked away behind a wall of greenery were four older men, talking heatingly about I don't know what, but the barman took us in with a warm smile and we ordered a frappe as it was the only thing from the menu we recognized (I am from Slovakia, and unfortunately cannot speak any Greek). The coffee came with a small but very tastefull cookie. When I close my eyes, I see that little bar, arguing gentlemen and I can almost taste the best frappe of my life. Even though I tried once to make it back at home, it was never that good. Thank you for this video and bringing back the memories.

Dalgona coffee made here is not served correctly. It's usually served in a short glass, think low ball glass or a coffee mug. It is stirred with a spoon at the end to get it all mixed together. It is more milk based. That part is correct. To me, they are similar drinks. It's just personal preference if you like more milky or not.

They are the same to me? You just changing the milk percentage. Just make Dalgona with less milk , I do 1 gr coffee ,1gr sugar (erythritol) , 25 ml water , MIX (I have a special high powered mixer that is made for that exact thing so there is no mess and it works well in 1 min , I usually go longer cause I have become an expert at it and I want a consistency where I can make the froth rotate in a satisfying way) In a glass add 3 small ice cubes and 30 gr of high fat milk 3.6 , or 20 grams of 10% fat milk put the the froth on top and mix with a straw. If I add more milk it tastes like milk which I don't like, if I add more water it tastes bland so that is perfect. And if you want to make it for 2 or more people just multiply.

Dalgona is well known to be overrated flavor-wise however it is definitely a much more beautiful experience. It’s good for blogs.

If you are one of those who "eats with their eyes" then sure, Dalgona is your drink. But if you are looking to satisfy your taste buds, then look no further than Greek Frappe!!!

I just made a keto version using monkfruit sweetener. That recipe also called for 2 Tablespoons each (instant coffee, sweetener, and water). Since this would be my third cuppa joe this morning, I cut the quantities in half and served it over 4 ounces of plain almond milk. Perfect and delicious!

Dalgona coffee 👎 Φραπέ or Frappe 🇬🇷 👍👍👍 Love-Love-Love it on a hot sunny day. I'm same as you are - in between the σκέτος and the μέτριος με γάλα. Even brought a φραπέ shaker cup from Greece to Scotland...along with a μπρίκι and a couple of big packs of Λογμιδης Παπαγάλος Παραδοσιακός coffee. Loving all Greek is in my blood, with one of my granddads being half-Greek. Thank you for all your fantastic recepies 😍👍☕🥤🏺❤️💖
