Now why would you say that about her, when she speaks with the wisdom heart of a woman. Wisdom requires being awake, not having balls. This seems to be the problem people are having trouble moving beyond. Gate gate paragate parasamgate, bodhisvaha....nowhere are balls mentioned. Ha, from another nun without balls

@@LisaVBlake it is TAYATHA OM GATE GATE PARA GATE PARA SAMGATE BODHI SVAHA. What i meant with having balls is sadly, traditionally and historically lay women and nuns have been not been given importance in buddhism; even though in Buddhism we have had great dakinis and living embodiments of Tara. Infact they were not even allowed to be in the same prayer hall with men. They had to sit outside the main door and pray. most Buddhist monks / nuns don't dare ask his holiness confronting questions which are controversial in nature. Ani Jetsun Palmo has done that. She is courageous in that regard and I have full respect for her. And since you too are a Ani or nun, I pay my respect to you too....

@@yuthok1 the issue with your comment is that you relate courage with masculinity, making direct reference to the male reproductive organ as symbolic of such quality. it is a linguistic matter, but language matters. we all understand bravery and courage as their own stand-alone concepts, there is no need for such misguided figure of speech. I second what the venerable nun wrote above. There are different transliterations of The Heart Sutra. The form the venerable nun wrote it is entirely understandable and you clearly understood that as The Heart Sutra. Your unnecessary "correction" of her spelling (in bold letters nonetheless) just displays contempt in your heart.

I am often dissapointed with the avoidance of difficult questions by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As a teacher you cannot laugh away the fact that some spiritual leaders are engaged in sexual misconduct, alcoholism and other unskillful behavior. He answers the question about initiations and financial incentive thereof, whereas this video starts right after Jetsuma Tenzin Palmo's brave question about Chogyam Trungpa's (Shambala) abusive un-Buddhist behavior that harmed many students. Her question is completely ignored. In my opinion HH the Dalai Lama should take a very clear stance against injustice, and he is not doing that here. Victims need protection and acknowledgement, not diplimatic answers... What happens here , in my view, is comparable to the pope's initial response to the sexual, psychological and physical abuse in the Catholic church. (first part of the video with the question by Jentsunma Tenzin Palmo: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6mjtsazd66TXbg.html )

While I agree in principle with what you are saying, it's not helpful to over-react without knowing all the facts. Some context is necessary here: It's very clear that this is a very old video of His Holiness. In light of some more recent scandals the late Sogyal Rinpoche (to name one for example), His Holiness has come out very strongly against this sort of behavior (abusive behavior). He even refers to Sogyal Rinpoche as a disgrace. No doubt it is shameful. But let's not cherry pick here. It's also important to look at the big picture and be balanced about ethics in the Tibetan Buddhist community. I am a Westerner and have been in this tradition for almost 20 years now. I've been to many centers throughout the country and have met many teachers in this beautiful tradition and I can tell you plainly that the overwhelming majority of Tibetan teachers are intelligent, kind, generous, and ethical. Living examples of the Dharma. Let's think of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for example. In an age where dishonesty, "fake news", misinformation, conspiracy theories, character attacks, racism and all kinds of disgraceful behavior is disturbingly becoming the norm for those in the public eye, His Holiness is an island of sanity, impeccable moral integrity, and embodiment of peace, love, compassion, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Let's be grateful that there is a living saint, a beacon of light in this world that we can all look up to for an example and inspiration. May he have a long life and may we learn from his example!

@@danield831 Hi Daniel. Thanks for sharing your view on things, always interesting to hear another point of view. You are right, I do not know all the facts, but I am familiar with a lot more context surrounding this particular topic and responses to it than just this video. Why I take such a confident stance here is because I think this was the moment where he could have stood up from the beginning, especially since it is an old video and elegations of unskilful behavior on Chogyam's behalf came to light, right then. HH the Dalai lama indeed nuanced his response on this later, but even then partly blaming the victims for their role in being abused. (For example he stated officially: “Part of the blame lies with the student, because too much obedience, devotion, and blind acceptance spoils a teacher.", after which he then stated the teacher's responsibility. Source: tricycle.org/trikedaily/encounter-shadow-buddhist-america/) Besides that, he also facilitated Chogyam and Shambala many times, by supporting his work in the US, praising his skills for representing Tibetan Buddhism in the West, visiting him in Boulder, etc. They were comfotable being publicly associated with one another. In my humble opinion, especially then it is necessary to at least state that you take these allegations very seriously as soon as they arise. Not turn to the next question. As a practicioner, I admire many, many Dharma teachers as well. But I am also aware many traditions and teachers that have well hidden, very controversial pasts. But, I agree with you, there are many, many decent, ethical, gracious and examplary Dharma teachers around, although some are not, and I just think it is a real good idea that they all avoid gray area's like these. Disapprove violence, no exceptions, always, even when it's just allegedly until the real story has come to light. Especially when there's victims involved and you're explicitly asked for a response. Reminding victims of their own responsibility isn't something I'd start with... I am curious to see the source where HH the Dalai Lama uses the word 'disgrace' regarding Shambala's history with misconduct. Not because I don't believe you, but because I have been looking for it a lot and not been able to find it. If you'd be so kind to drop a link... would be much appreciated. Be well. Warmest, R

@@avalokiteshvaravalon Also, I don't believe His Holiness was blaming the victims. Please remember that "victimhood" is an internal frame of mind primarily of suffering. His Holiness correctly reminds us that we need to take responsibility for our own actions and use wisdom and discernment when being a student of a teacher. Not to excuse Shambala or any other abusive teacher, students need to be responsible for identifying red-flags with a teacher early on and not just jump into a goo-goo eyed, blind faith relationship with the first teacher who comes along. I agree with His Holiness on this point.

@@danield831 Wouldn't it help a lot of vulnerable people if he'd place a red flag when directly asked for his opinion though? He could've protected future victims here. Sorry for misreading your comment, bummer though, can indeed only find his associatons with Shambala and its leaders, nowhere his dissociation. Although victimhood is partly mental affliction one 'attaches' to, and letting go of that would be a good thing, that is only a valid message on a further stage of healing, traumatised victims of abuse often feel responsible and unworthy, deeply depressed as the result of what another person did to them. HHDL's comment is abhorrent from that perspective. That suffering needs acknowledgement and to be detested, especially if someone is known for his boddhissatvic characteristics. This will be my last response in our conversation, thanks again for your perspective. May you be well.

It seems that certain degrees of attainment are "independent" of personal ethics, similar to how Miles Davis made sublime music but was a shitty person. We often seem to conflate the two (master of something & ethical human) in a naive way. However, I also believe that people worth calling your Master, teacher, whatever, should exhibit a marriage of the two qualities. Otherwise and if/when we get disappointed by the truth, we should cut the Buddha's head off and throw ourselves back into the arms of the "True Guru" within.

I love His Holiness Dalai Lama very much. If we are to be measured by what we have given of ourselves in service to others in the end of the end, his life has benefited billions and will for all time. He lives his life the way he has so that others might live better lives. He makes Mahayana Buddism accessable and clear while never watering it down. Never has he ever degraded another philosophy or religion. China commited and continues to commit genocide against his country and 'his people' and he responds with compassion and level headedness. While much of the world is misbehaving, being deeply cruel, snipping at one another, competing rather than cooperating, killing rather than helping to live...and on and on and on...he is the reminder that we have a choice about how we respond and how we want to be with others, even those who are cruel. They can be opportunities for growing compassion or to lash out with mindless hurtful language and intent. I've looked for ways to live and be at peace with the cruelties inherent in the very fact we are all living and human. He and Mahayana Buddhism askes us to question everything rather than accepting it's teachings without reasoning them through for ourselves. This is very important, to me, and I believe actually, for every person. It seems not only practical, it seems respectful. It seems to be about cooperation. It's certainly not dogmatic which is wonderful. Thank you to the 14th Dalai Lama. Thank you to all Dalai Lama's who came before him.

Tenzin Palmo's statements are fiercely intelligent and important. The Dalai Lama's reply avoids the abuse by lamas totally. He says that it's the Western students' fault because tantra is secret and only for the chosen few. What bs! All Vajrayana is tantra. As if secrecy had anything to do with it, except to protect the abusers for being called into account for their unethical behavior, serial sexual abuses, deceptions and harm. Alex Berzin adds that lamas use tantric initiations as a carrot on a stick to generate money, pointing out the lamas' responsibility - or lack of it - when it comes to tantra. What an ugly, unethical thing, using tantric initiations to generate donations! Yikes. ai ai ai, the Dalai Lama insists that he uses mass tantra initiations to teach people how to be ethical. Why not just give teachings on that??!! Or at least teach the LAMAS to be ethical. The DL speaks as if the general population is so unethical that at least for the days they are attending the people who come behave nicely. No mentioning the unethical behavior of the lamas!!! Total avoidance. And then he says "restrict the tantric teachings" to Western students as if it was STUDENTS seeking to learn tantra that was wrong, they are at fault and not the lamas acting out!!! Frankly insane. And that Westerners need to set up a fund for Western students who cannot afford to pay the exorbitant fees the lamas charge to learn the tantra or get initiations?? It is just NUTS. Money grubbing, avoidance of talking about lamas committing abuse, putting all the blame on the students again and again.

I have a different totally answer to the question of 'Crazy Wisdom.' Before I say that just want to state that I call Tenzin Palmo Her Holiness & our dear Dalai Lama His Haughtiness. She has proven her worth, has he? Or just born a King, like a Feudal Lord in a land that maybe exploited the poor? Lived like a King, everyone else but his monks in the palace, experienced work from morning to night, supplying him & his monks {for untold generations} with all that was needed. I'm not an expert, this is just a CASUAL, not deeply studied opinion. If I am wrong, forgive me..........I will give my ideas about 'Crazy Wisdom' in the next comment, as don't want this to be too long.

Tibetan Buddhism is not unlike Catholicism, a lot of pomp and abuse and sleight of hand. Theravada is no pomp and all Dhamma. The world loves Mahayana Tibetan Buddhism because it is the world disguised as religion! The Buddha was a forest monk, not decked out in finery. Tibetan Buddhism looks glamorous, after all, Dalai Lama owns 19 Rolex watches ...

With the recent video of dalai lama asking a young boy to suck his tongue it's no wonder he did nothing to stop the sexual abuse by lamas back in 1993. He was asked to sign a declaration that teachers shouldn't have sex with their students, but it now looks like he is a pederast himself. I'm not surprised considering how rampant pedophilia is in their monasteries.

This woman [Tenzin] is ridiculous, first, she said: "The moment I discovered Buddhism I knew this was my thing" now she wants to re-structure Buddhism. In my opinion Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo asks a very brave question. She stands up for injustice here, tries to decrease suffering by acknowledges the victims of Chogyam Trungpa's (Shambala) abusive behaviors and she invites HH the Dalai Lama to the same. She's being ignored instead. If restructuring Buddhism means making it a safer place where unskilful teachers are called out, I think that's a good thing. If anything, Shambala is de most modern of lineages in Tibetan Buddhism, so if anything is restructuring Buddhism it's the Shambala lineage. There's just no excuse for abuse, ever. If that's crazy wisdom, no one should receive it. Compassionate and examplary teachers is what we need. Not teachers avoiding difficult questions with diplomatic answers.

@@giggles8458 Well, you kinda disqualify your position by calling a revered teacher an idiot, but I will try to provide a civil response nonetheless. It's pretty selective, for HH the Dalai Lama to not answer that particular question. He answers many questions in regard to the fundamental structure of the Tibetan Buddhist lineages, for example the one about Lama invitations in the West and its 'inevitably' connected incentive for expensive initiations. And then when it comes to abuse and violence he's like "I don't know what was said, go ask the Buddha for change". Bit easy, hey? He's sitting on a throne, literally. He is in a position of influence and power which he decides to use for many other occasions/questions/problems but he avoids this one. It's like the pope condoning violence and sexual abuse by priests. It's just unacceptable, and against everything Buddhism should stand for.

GOOD POINT. in French we call them "mal (ou pas) baisées". I hardly ever heard about lamas violently raping disciples. 99% of the cases, assuming the stories are true, the women agreed to it, then later retracted their consent, or tried to possess their lama for themselves, or realize they've been fooled, and blame the man instead of blaming their own stupidity, therefore denying their own agency and responsibility in choosing who to fuck with and why. but most of those stories are complete bs anyway, made up by attention whores.
