I have never seen this type of racing before. I was wondering what the gut in the middle does?

This type of racing is called a rally raid. The Dakar is one of the toughest. During 15 days, competitors of different categories (bikes, quads, cars, SSV and trucks) face each other on stages ranging from 100 to 500 km per day. They have a track to follow on every stage. The guy in the middle is a co-pilot. He tells the pilot where to go during the stages. Next to him, there are the pilot and a mecanician.
