I used to be a soprano but haven't really sung in a few years so I use this warmup to slowly built up my range again. And after doing this for a few weeks now I finally see some progress, although it's still not as controlled as I would like. Anyways I love your videos and they really help me a lot!

I have done this warm up a few times now but for some reason keep forgetting to comment. So sorry about that Jeff. This is a really great video for the variety it affords, but again as with so many of your warm ups, it really helps to keep on pitch. The change into legato is always a winner, I mean from the staccato notes into that area. I think it gives a wonderful balance in readiness for singing any song. A bucketful of thanks dear Jeff. All your warm ups are ever helpful, but I really love this one. Have a great weekend.

Hi Jeff. Thanks for the new video. I'm professionally trained, but for some reason lip trills in the higher ranges are basically impossible for me. Being told to "relax" is not helpful. Is this just something to do with my particular physiology do you think? Also, the geek in me loves your use of Italian terms like "Segundo Passaggio." I feel really smart when I learn new things like that. Keep it coming.

Hello Simone! You're welcome! Thank you for your question! Probably not, but since I don't know your voice I can't rule it out completely. It's pretty common to lose the lip trill at certain points in a given pattern when learning how to use it. It is telling you that the configuration of your vocal fold in conjunction with the flow of air is changing dramatically. Usually, the air flow has become insufficient to retain vocal fold adduction in a given range. Working with expansion an engagement, in order to increase subglottic air pressure, often helps this. I hope that helps! Jeff

I enjoyed this warm up. Thank you for the less talking. My only gripe is that I get lost if you go past two vowels. I just don't know where to transition!

You need to learn the passaggios, the the transition areas between a series of notes, usually occurring between registers of the voice (i.e., between the chest voice and the head voice or middle to the high notes of the vocal range). Where these occur differs with each individual. When you transition from one register to another, try to make it as smooth as possible with no change in your tone, so that your voice glides comfortably and easily into the next register/passaggio. I found this explanation for you which you may find helpful: How can I recognise a Transition Area? The vocal folds are muscles that change in thickness and length. As you sing ascending pitches the vocal cords (folds) automatically lengthen and thin, whilst singing descending pitches causes the folds to become shorter and thicker. Sound is produced by passing air through/across the vocal cords (or folds) as they open ( ) and close ll (known as adducting) causing the cords to vibrate and be amplified by the bodys resonating areas, whilst an individuals range or amount of notes that they can use is decided by their physical make up i.e., the length and thickness of the vocal folds and their elasticity plus other factors like the shape and depth of the resonating chambers (mouth and nasal passages), training, age and experience.
