Dahlia Tuber Update! Rejuvenating Dry Tubers & Winter Storage, Zone 5a Flower Farming

It's been about 3 weeks since I tucked my dahlia tubers into storage, so I wanted to share an update on how they are doing with the 2 methods that I am using to store them for the winter. I also received an order for additional tubers that looked dry and shriveled, so I am rejuvenating them before I put them in storage!

interesting method, perhaps I will try it next year. Mine are in shredded paper, bought from the pet store and it's sold as litter for hamsters. One year I got mold on my tubers and I sprayed them with a very dilute solution of bleach, perhaps 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. It worked and they were fine.

Last season I tried the Saran wrap method for the first time. I was so impressed by it. I live in Utah. I'm in a very dry desert. My tubers always dried out until I found the Saran wrap method. Thanks for your videos. I love learning from you.

I’m in a fairly dry zone in the winter, and I Saran wrapped mine up to keep them fresh but when I checked them a couple weeks ago, a few were starting to shrivel (even wrapped!!) so I moistened some paper towel and wrapped the dry looking ones in that for a couple of hours. I let them fully dry and re wrapped them. They are doing fine. Checking on them often is a very good idea, no matter how they are stored. 😊

The most tubers I ever lost were when my basement was too warm….colder the better where I am in N. Ontario zone 4b

I did the pine shavings method & misted layers as I stored them & stirred well to distrubute moisture evenly and I had very inconsistent results this spring. I had rot, mold, and desiccated tubers in every box. I think I lost at least 20%. This year I am switching to peat moss, vermiculite, and saran wrap and compare methods this year.

Sorry to hear that. I definitely had better luck with Saran Wrap vs pine chips

Thank you learned a,lot from your videos, this is my first year growing Dalias and have made many mistakes. Getting ready to store mine, will be using the wrap method, do you open them during the winter and check and maybe Re spray?

You know there are a lot of companies out there doing that and for inexperienced gardeners we just have to take the loss then send you bad bulbs or very tiny plants that don't grow so we do need
