Dahlia Gall and Dahlias Drying in Storage

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today is the day I deal with my Dahlia problems. When I packed my dahlia tubers away last fall I forgot to wet the storage medium and they have been drying out. I also packed away tubers with Dahlia Gall or Crown Gall that I need to dispose of. I will show you how I am taking care of these issues.

    I was searching for a video on gall to send a friend and I'm so upset to have found this one. If you are new to dahlias, please do not follow these methods. Storing an obviously diseased plant with other clumps and handling them all with the same gloves after touching what you know is crown gall are both great ways to spread disease. Dahlia leaves will never be misshapen due to lack of water. That is purely a disease/pest problem. Also: you can have tubers that look perfectly fine that are infected and you can have "soft" tubers that are perfectly healthy. So the squeezing technique here to check for gall is totally ineffective. I love dahlias and my favorite thing is to help people start growing them. But I am also passionate about not spreading diseased stock. I just hope that this creator takes the time to do more learning before making tutorials in the future. I also saw a comment where they said they've stored their tubers in these bottomless crates under a staircase. If that is a cement/concrete floor, that will take all the moisture. Doesn't matter if you put the cloth down and they're not directly touching the floor. I don't know what the science is there, but all the members in my local dahlia group with 30+ years of experience say do NOT put them on a cement/concrete floor without a thick piece of cardboard in between, or your tubers will desiccate. I divide my tubers in the fall and store each divided clump in its own paper or plastic bag with cedar wood shavings. Those are all kept in a big plastic tub with a lid. I also keep a thermometer and humidity meter in the box so I can keep an eye on them. You want temp between 40-50 F and humidity around 70-80%. Be sure to sanitize your tools with bleach solution or Virkon S in between plants. Rubbing alcohol is ineffective at killing dahlia viruses. I'd recommend anyone new to dahlias join their local dahlia society. You will learn lots of different methods for everything and can pick the ones that work best for you. Plus it's a great resource to be able to ask the old hats about disease management.

    You should change your gloves after touching the diseased tubers or you could spread the bacteria.....just a suggestion

    I used 67% humidity packs for maintaining a moist environment in my vermiculite, they'll either remove or add moisture to maintain the 67% humidity. They' re used in the Cannabis industry and actually rehydrated my dry tubers and they looked perfect the following spring

    I love the pink colour of your Wizard of Oz variety. I love the shape of the petals. I forgot the name of the ones I have, but they have the same petal shape. My four clumps are of various shades of orange. I bought them at Costco last spring. Your video reminded me to check my tubers, which I will be doing tomorrow. This year, I stored mine in peat moss, in the double paper bags that I use for yard waste, inside the plastic blue boxes that we used for recyclable garbage before we got the large garbage carts. Wish me luck.

    I hope your dahlias are all looking great when you check on them. Wizard of Oz is one of my new favourite dahlias. I picked it for its shape and it didn’t disappoint. They worked into bouquets very nicely which is a huge plus to me.

    WOW! You are spot on . One of my purple dahlias seemed to always need watering. Always wilting, but did bloom quite well. I’m concerned that the whole order was infected because the performance was spotty, and some died. I’m growing dahlias from seed for the first time. I am impressed with the vigor. Iodine they bloom well I may just keep a few tubers to store. Thank you for the information. Spot on with symptoms. 🌼❤️

    I always thought humid areas had better luck. Some people wrap their tubers in plastic wrap. It seems wasteful and fiddly so I’ve never tried it.

    @@PrairiePlantgirl Yup I was totally prepared for rot not dried out. I used shredded paper and Amazon boxes to store in a back basement closet. This Fall going to leave more soil on them like you did. I was so paranoid of rot I brushed all dirt off and let them dry for 2wks before packing away. Won't do that again.

    A lot of people do wash their tubers. It seems like it worked for you. I have never washed mine and it’s never caused a problem. There are as many ways to do this as there are climates I’m sure. Pick what works best for you.

    @@PrairiePlantgirl NO way I was going to introduce more wet by washing them, I was paranoid enough with our humidity. I just brushed with different sized old paint brushes after the 2wks drying on the basement floor.

    Did you get rid of all the gall? I had leafy gall two years ago, and I suspect that just handling the tubers without desinfecting hands/gloves and tub in between each tuber, will spread the gall.

    I was looking for information about crown gall on dahlias, and found your video. One of my dahlias has a lot of growths that looks similar to when potatoes start to grow eyes.Some said it was growth nubbins, others said gall.Will the copper help or is it too late? They were all planted in pots last year.

  • @PrairiePlantgirl

    @PrairiePlantgirl

    If those growths are near the top of the tuber, around where the old stem formed, they likely are growth nubbins. Dahlias can be very odd looking. From what I learned gall has more of a warty ( lumps piled on/against lumps) look. This is my first experience with this. I am trying the copper, but it may not help. I’m taking a bit of a gamble. Did your dahlias perform well last year? From what I understand gall will cause odd growth and lack or distorted flowering.

    Hello from Ontario. I watch your vlogs all the time. .love them Question. My dalhia bulbs are stored in news paper. An last time i checked them they were fine. Will be checking them again shortly. My question is. If the bulbs are starting to dry up. What would i do for them?. Their in newspapers

  • @PrairiePlantgirl

    @PrairiePlantgirl

    I’ve never stored them in newspaper, but you would need to provide them with some moisture. You could try dampening the paper a bit. If they aren’t drying yet, you are likely not going to have an issue. Some varieties seem more prone to drying. I have found the rounder tubers easier to store vs the long skinnier ones. Thanks for your support.

    Your cotton towel in the bottom of the storage basket may act like a "wick" and drawn moisture out of the storage medium. Perhaps if covered with a thin plastic would help. Also any drafts caused by air, furnace or whatever will probably affect the longevity of moisture.

  • @PrairiePlantgirl

    @PrairiePlantgirl

    The towel could cause wicking, but it is very thin and was dry. I didn’t wet the medium enough early on. The area they are stored is in a small closet under the stairs, not really a drafty space. Some plastic in the crates could be helpful.

    That washer and dryer only get used once a month or less and the bulbs are stored in an enclosed space near them. This is just a space where I have room to show them to the camera. This is a commercial space we have for our business. The machines came with it, but aren’t really needed anymore. Actually, the dryer isn’t vented outside so the space gets humid when it is used. A good hypothesis, but with the extra info I’m quite certain the machines aren’t harming my bulbs. This space is slightly too warm, but the best I have.
