I'm attempting to store dahlia tubers for the first time this year, and I've read so many articles and watched tons of other videos that mention to check on tubers regularly throughout the winter, but it helps so much to actually SEE someone walk through the process and decide how much water to add! The elephant ears and caladiums were also a nice bonus. This video clarified a lot for me -- thank you so much for sharing!!!

Another great video! I am checking on our 170 dahlias this weekend. We live in southern Wisconsin and store them in cardboard boxes with newspapers and peat moss. After seeing your video today I picked up vermiculite to add to the boxes. Most of ours look good since our basement is cool and dark. However, the best looking dahlias are the few that were dug out with some dirt attached and stored in the huge paper leaf bags. We tried this method for a few last year when our fall was so wet that a local grower suggested this. We had 100% success with those last year. The bags were heavy and we returned the soil to the garden in the spring.

I have the saran wrap tubers in a cooler in the garage against the house wall. So far so good. They’re staying in low 40’s temp. I have a total of about 60, and maybe 80 on order! Crazy! I don't know if you realize it, but you've got fungus gnats in some of those boxes. This is a good sign because it means you've got plenty of moisture. However the gnats can cause alot of damage. If you dust with just a bit of sulfur powder, that will take care of the problem . This also prevents fungus problems since it's an insecticide and fungicide.

Microwave or oven. High temperatures have a sterilizing effect. However I never used vermiculite to store dahlia tubers. I just kept them in plastic crates with some paper for protection. There’s not one-fit-all system. I have seen people use potting compost, sand, sawdust, paper shavings. A lot depends on the temperature/humidity/air circulation of the place where you store them.

  • @greatgardensforall
