Deep Purple's line-up is interresting to know over the years. They are still kind of "active" ? If they are how did they replace their shape giving member Jon Lord ? In Ian Gillan they found a singer, who's voice is very similar to Rod Evan's here.
When I was in high school, a Junior, a friend introduced me to DP. Book of Taliesyn, I believe. I was awed. Then came Shades of Deep Purple and MAN! could they rock. I loved the instrumentals as much as the lyrical songs. When this album came out, I was a Freshman in college. I didn't like it quite as much as the first 2 albums, but still liked it. But something changed radically and this was the last Deep Purple album I ever bought. The metamorphosis, to me, was a butterfly changing to an ugly caterpillar in years that came later. But thes first 3 albums were right up there with the Beatles and Steppenwolf, and other up and coming bands that faded away into the 1970s.

Mark 1..... My favorite era of Deep Purple. April is a masterpiece. So psychedelic and awesome. Hope Rod Evans is well wherever he is ( last I heard he was head of Respiratory Therapy in California at some Hospital ). His stuff, mainly the 1st album of 2 , is Great with Captain Beyond. Love his Purple Stuff as well, even the covers are cool. Love all incarnations of Purple, but loving The Progressive sound, this is above the rest.

I WAS READING ON WIKIPEDIA ABOUT ROD EVANS, THAT WHEN DEEP PURPLE WAS INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME CEREMONY THAT HE DID NOT ATTEND AND THAT THE LAST TIME ANY OF THE MEMBERS HAD KNOWN OF HIS WHEREABOUTS WAS BACK IN 1980 WHEN HE FORMED THE PHONY DEEP PURPLE IN WHICH HE WAS SUED BY DEEP PURPLES MANAGEMENT AND THAT WAS 40 YRS AGO AND IAN PAICE EVEN REFERENCED THAT IF ANYBODY KNEW WHERE HE WAS OR WHAT HE WAS DOING TO REACH OUT TO HIM CAUSE HE HAS BEEN IN SO CALLED HIDING FOR A VERY LONG TIME AND NOT EVEN KNOWN WHETHER THE MAN WAS ALIVE OR DEAD, HE WAS BORN IN 1947 WHICH WOULD MAKE HIM 74 AS OF THIS YR. He has not appeared publicly since the court case and his current whereabouts are of considerable interest to fans of early Deep Purple.[10] In 2015, Ian Paice said, "If anyone knows where Rod is or even if he is still on the planet, that would be good news. We haven't had contact with him since the late 1970s. Nobody seems to know where the hell he is, or even if he is still alive. Not a clue."[12] In a 2015 interview, Captain Beyond drummer Bobby Caldwell mentioned that he was in touch with Evans and that Evans is "just doing fine these days" and had gone back to working in respiratory therapy for a long time.[13] On 8 April 2016, Evans was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple, but did not attend the ceremony.

The first Deep Purple I ever heard back in 1969. I was immediately hooked. Still my favourite band of all time. Ritchie Blackmore is a superb guitarist extraordinaire. In fact, every band member is the master of their craft.

My parents had a casette with some early DP numbers and it was my first acquaintance with this band. Frankly I prefer these songs as they have this nice psychedelic groove. Thanks to my parents I'm an old rocker in a body of a 35 years old.
First encounter with DP was Dp in Rock. I was 10 or 11 or so, and it blew me away. This nugget here I found much later, and like it even more.
I love early Deep Purple! Their imaginative songs were amazing. And the covers they did were very good also. They had the flair and courage to make the covers their own.
Que gran banda en todas sus epocas de cambios, este disco es buenísimo me encanta es pura esencia extraordinaria banda.un saludo..👍👍👍🍀🍀🍀👏👏👏
Paice is so underrated,in 73 i was 13'and had my Ritchie Blackmore satin pants, black shirt,my hair was frizzin out like his,i had a new Strat and a red Marshall stack,a Tobacco burst LP for Zep stuff, and just bought a SG because of Zappa.Mine my teenage cover band could play anything,we were even getting into RTF stuff,Tull,,Trower,Hendrix.

Super album for all times!!!💥🎯👑🌐🤗😍🤩😂😎🎸
That's Rod Evans singing. Original singer for DP..He then went on to write with Bobby Caldwell drummer for Captain Beyond's 1st record. Considered by many one of the finest hard rock albums ever..
Особенная прелесть этих ранних альбомов. Их просто обязательно нужно прослушать,чтоб сложилась целостная картина ,генезис,Deep Purple.

This album is right behind Zepp 1 and first Sabbath for best 1969 HR album. We forget because MH and Burn are so amazing……but this has its own significance. Rod of course would do the Captain Beyond album. Ritchie’s solo in Why Didn’t Rosemary is the best pure blues solo he ever laid to tape.

Großartiges Album. Habe ein Ticket fürs Concert HH-Freilichtbühne. Ursprünglich sollte es im Juni 2019 sein. Jetzt wirds wohl nochmal verschoben
Why does “Chasing Shadows” have a fade out ending? On the album I had the song just cut abruptly in a more dramatic way I find.
The guys were serious on that album!

This album is great! Like Paice awesome drumming in Blind! April is one killer track, a mixture of spaghetti western, composition of Moondog and rock. Fault line is a groovy beat.
