I wonder how they design their campaigns then. Personally, I'm not sure how you can provide a decent challenge that's not inherently deadly or a cakewalk if you're not balancing encounters with some tool of measurement. CR, for the most part, is the closest thing to balance you can get lol

@@BlaineSimple Being blunt; CR is typically inherently bad as a measure. My personal favorite example is the Pugwampi Gremlin. They're listed as CR 1/2 as a creature. However, their effects are: DR 5, can ride/hide on any creature for the most part and give disadvantage to all rolls in a 20ft radius with no save except for its allies that are unaffected among other things. I'd say that providing a decent challenge to the party depends mostly on knowing the actual party. You know what they can do for the most part. Have baseline numbers for your attacks, saves and AC while using the creature's template (the special abilities), but adjust them to the relevant level. If they nuke the boss; give the next one more health or some adds to keep them from focusing on it.

I can understand the perception of the Shambling Mound from the eyes of the players, but here's the thing: It's not God, just an interesting uncommon monster. It is the player's fault for focusing their powers solely in one direction, heavy evocation. There are monsters in DnD that have high defenses in one area, but can be vulnerable or have no defenses in another, that is the idea of running DnD as a team, stretch your utilities and capabilities so that each player can cover their neighbor's weakness. This is the equivalent of having an entire party of greatsword wielding fighters fighting against a Black Pudding.

  • @BlaineSimple

First time watching, and I've paused 45 seconds in because of your pronunciation of Tiefling. Edit after finishing: Pronunciation aside, that was a good video. Sounds like a hilarious time of noobs playing DnD. I've been in a party of 3 that fought a shambling mound at level 4. We killed it so fast. By all accounts, you were right. They should have had an easy time, but they stacked the odds against themselves by all doing the same thing. As far as I am aware, fire is one of the most resisted elements, due to it being so common. Really should have gone for the feat over the intelligence score. That 1 extra damage isn't worth not doing damage at all sometimes. Especially when you specialize in that element. Also by not thinking outside of the box. The very instant you said it was a shambling mound, I thought back to the acid and immediate thought that they were gonna push/lure it into the acid to kill it easily. They had so many advantages, but you punished their disadvantages hard, even by not meaning to. This reminds me of a story my one DM tells. One time, his group was around level 5 or so, and they started exploring some catacombs. They encountered a caved in area and decided to dig through it. They spent an entire in game week digging through the cave, constantly going back to town for supplies, whilst being repeatedly warned by said DM not to do this. After finally getting through to the other side, they encountered a level 18 or so Archlich that was a final boss of something they were supposed to encounter a while down the road. The original plan was for them to keep coming back to this dungeon throughout the campaign. They party wiped trying to run away. Moral of the story, when your DM tells you repeatedly to stop digging, listen.

Woah, I love your comment, so well detailed and organized! So let be reply thoughtfully as well. We've been pronouncing tiefling like 'tie-fling' since we began playing D&D together. If I changed now, they wouldn't let me, so I got used to mispronouncing it! Also, it's nice that you could tell how the odds were definitely in their favor. I try to RP monsters based on their INT stat and the monster manual entry, so the mound acted like it would in the wild. Thirdly,I definitely agree to listen closely to your DM. Sometimes they even give you information you shouldn't have just to save you from struggling.

Thing is, if the monster fits thematically there is no issue with DM vs party. You're goal as a DM is to keep things interesting. So if you have a group of players who have entirely specialized for 1 thing, then you keep it interesting by forcing them to figure out how to do something other than that 1 thing. Dont always negate their abilities otherwise it is just annoying that you can't use what you are made for, but do so often enough that they need to be able to improvise.

  • @madhatten00

@@cybermage99 i think the main issue is the party isnt balanced properly. It really comes down to how willing the dm is towards party members dying. A shambling mound shouldnt be too difficult if the party had the proper spells. It's more likely the dm didnt prepare properly and just thought oh forest, shambling mound, why not? Totally fits the situation.

Railroading would’ve been not allowing for checks or the opportunity to do damage, it was even stated in the video that they could all magic missile the hell out of it. They probably would’ve been fine if they did that. There’s a difference between a bad encounter + bad luck and railroading.

I have a funny story revolving around a shambling mound. In a recent campaign our group was fighting a Shambling Mound and my character kept accidentally healing it with thunder magic. (I was a bronze dragonborn cleric that's the tempest domain. My name was Pikachu) So the group kinda put me in a corner and told me not to move unless someone was dying. So eventually our rouge got eaten and then squeezed her way out and so I was protecting and healing her. Then I thought it was a good idea to call the mound a "Dyslexic Apricot" and the mound got terrified. The end.

Shambling mounds are one of those monsters that are deceptively nasty for their CR. They seem like a simple, slow melee brute at first glance but their huge health pool, resistance to common spell damage, surprise lightning absorbing heal, solid damage multiattack with grapple and that damn engulf mechanic makes them a potential party killer vs a low level party. I had one as the final boss of a flooded out sewer dungeon and it damn near killed my group - broke out of an entangle, engulfed the paladin and crushed him into death saves, drove them out of the dungeon after they narrowly retrieved him. When they went back for round two it nommed the sorceress instead and if the druid hadn't figured out how to drain the room it would have kept picking them off. Made them super paranoid about piles of innocuous garbage.

Sometimes the dice just decide your arch nemesis AND moral compass. I had a level 20 Tabaxi Long Death Monk(17)/Inquisitive Rogue(3) who "should" have been unable to roll below a 26 for discerning lies, but my DM had a ruling that Nat1s are the only thing that does not get covered by that. I had half a dozen perception checks in that oneshot, and rolled 3 nat 20s and nothing below a 17. But my attempts to interrogate any captured pawns? 2-3 attempts; nat1 insight checks EVERY TIME. (possibly some Lost Mines of Phandelver spoilers below, just early game stuff, 2nd level and lower) In LMoP, I play a over-the-top heroic Tiefling Rogue (heading towards swashbuckler) and out of 5 attempts to kill opponents who had been put to sleep not a single successful attack roll EVEN with the melee advantage. With a Level 1 party of 5, we took on Yeemik's group; in something like 6 full rounds we landed no more than 3 hits, for a grand total of 13 damage. Klarg? We reach 2nd level by then and took out his entire entrenched with only 2 party members even getting injured. Decided to go back and try Yeemik again, we STILL had nearly every party member drop and went 4 full rounds of not being able to land a single hit on Yeemik. Survived it, but there was absolutely no reason for it to be that hard other than the dice just deciding to screw us over.

Lesson learned: stop pushing the issue when it's clear you won't succeed. Vistra (Duergar Ancestral Guardian Barbarian). Nearly murdered by a group of ogres after scouting ahead to investigate the source of a noise we could here over 1000 feet away from our location down the road, managing to kill one but the chain ogre beat her into unconscious. Lesson learned: Never split the party, or at least not by that much. Wagner Krieg von Glasfyre (my character, Human Alchemist Artificer). Nearly stabbed to death in his sleep by a very pissed off Oni who was part of the ogre group mentioned before. Lesson learned: ALWAYS HAVE ALARM PREPARED AND CAST BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP.
