Fun video, it does look like you learned your lesson though on the first character. It is fine having a detrimental quirk in a character, just make sure the entire party is on board with it, otherwise you're not just risking your character but everyone's and that is just not good or fun.

I have played in a game where someone made a character like that. We ended up telling the player they could either have their character stop doing that or they could make a new character that was more party friendly. Their character doing that was fun for that but sucked the fun out of the game for everyone else.

@@RabblesTheBinx Depends what you mean by an entirely different game. AD&D (“1e”) and 5e at least still have classes, levels, hit points, and a pre-determined list of spells (among other things) in common, of which all are lacking (in some ways for the better) in the fantasy game I’m playing in now that uses the rules from a superhero game called Mutants and Masterminds 3. Compared to that game, and many other games out there, other than for relatively minor rules changes and tweaks, AD&D and 5e are virtual clones.

Wait, why the hell did YT eat my comment? Ugh, well, I'm not typing that all out again. Short version: No. Sure there are games that are more different, but there are also a lot of games that are more similar. They don't play the same, the balance isn't the same, entire classes have shifted in focus.

  • @neillindgren8992

@@RabblesTheBinx Well, yes, but it still depends what you mean. Arguing that Pathfinder or indy “old school” D&D knockoffs, or even non-fantasy games like Stars without Number (1st edition anyway) are more like Basic/Expert or AD&D than 5e is quite valid, but than again games like Big Eyes, Small Mouth 4e, Mutants and Masterminds 3, the Fantasy Flight Star Wars games, Fate, or even Cyberpunk (the tabletop RPG) are light years more different than AD&D is to 5e. At least AD&D and 5e share the same basic skeleton. Now if you were talking about 4e, I’d definitely say that’s the edition of D&D that’s the most different. At least you can look at AD&D, 2e, or even 3e or 5e and see it’s basically the same game skeleton, even if some of the details are quite different.

I kind of have a theme for my characters in that they are all the same guy but every time he reincarnates he has amnesia and has to go on adventures to make money and new memories (Exp) that vary each time. How does he do it? He’s basically a cursed immortal who’s only real ability is to reincarnate with clones but at the expense of his memories. The only clue to this is his first name is always a Latin number telling everyone what life he is on now. (Example: Primus Rex, Secundus Rex, Tertius Rex, and so on) The goal with this style is that it actually makes dying funny and my character sheets easier to write. Same guy with amnesia, different class, and re rolled stats, always start as neutral. Even if I can’t win I can still at least have a laugh as being the South Park Kenny of the group.

I’m a forever DM myself, but just this year I finally got a friend to dm. My second session, halfway through a cave crawl looking for missing party members and plot items, the human Druid of the party cast “Thunderwave”. In the depths of the cave. Bruno, my Lupin (dog folk) fiend patron warlock, his pet mastiff, an old human sorcerer played by a friend, the owlin rogue played by my sister, and the reborn Dragonborn monk played by one of my brothers, all were crushed and knocked over a ledge, which the captured party members saw. The human Druid and the centaur ranger survived, and discovered the death toll of the rocks. The Druid immediately leveled up from level 1 to level 5, the centaur and the captured, now rescued, human bard and owlin cleric, they got to level up to level 2. So not only was this my first character death, it literally was a “rocks fall, everybody dies.” Scenario. And I know I did my job well when the survivors were more mad at the Druid, of all people, having killed and gotten xp for killin my dog, of all things. I wasn’t mad. I was kinda giddy over having like this being my first character death. Again, I’m usually the forever DM. Can’t wait to play more, so we’ll see how soon I can be back from being behind the DM screen.

@@OrangeDragon04 Probably something the NPC would expect the PCs be okay with doing, but would be hard to do themselves. Doesn't NEED to be difficult for the party, just out of the NPC's reach. Maybe they're banned from the local [library/church/school/tavern/restaurant/alchemist shop/boatyard/fish market/town square/ex's house/own childhood family estate/bazaar/wizard collage they were kicked out of/hideout of the cult the party has already been fighting/playground/queen's castle/taxidermist] grounds? They are hanging out in city alleys, so at least some of their wants are probably close by. If they've burned a lot of bridges in their life, might have errands in multiple of the example places, or with the other NPCs within them that don't want to deal with a necromancer. Like, if you're only making the cloning expensive to match better with the spell component cost and not to make it harder for the PCs to obtain, the favor is more about what value it holds to the NPC needing it done than how valuable carrying the favor out is to the party members. Can be serious stuff, quirky stuff, or a mix of both. Might want to taste the best sandwich in the nation again after 10 years going without, or a sentimental heirloom, or of course spell components they're lacking. Though, if the party will go out of their way for your specific examples, that's good too. If multiple clones are ordered, maybe the NPC trusts them with more complex requests the more they deal with them, starting with only very mundane favors for the first couple clones and some serious sidequest stuff for more than that (maybe even lowering the gold price for a bigger ask)?

I ad a Kenny like character, except their powers activated when they die. Instead of going on death saves they gain one hit point back and turn into a gunslinging demon with 50 temporary hit points. The only peoblem with this is that they can no longer distinguish between friend or foe. My other party members often have to kill them. Once the hp is gone its normal death saves with one automatic failure. It only activated once per long rest. There have been times where I've had close calls though. That's the story of the character that I played about five years ago.

I lost 30+ characters over the course of 3 about months. to be clear: we played D&D once a week, and I lost over 30 characters. My record is technically eight in 1 session. The best way to survive is to stop rolling dice. Start as Rogue and go to 3 for Mastermind. Then start taking Divine Sorcerer levels, making sure to nab healing word and Spare the Dying. You can now give 2 advantages each turn without being in the thick of things. additionally, you can pick someone up from being downed, then dash/disengage to a safe distance. Take Magic Initiate: Wizard when you can (Variant Human is the best but Rog/Sorc 4 works) to get Find Familliar for 3 Help actions per turn and the abillity to cast Spare the Dying and eventually Revivify from a distance. Congrats, you no longer have to roll dice for anything that you don't have expertise and/or up to 3 other bonuses in and the party will fight tooth and nail to keep you alive since you catalyze their characters so hard they're effectively 2 levels higher than whatever level you're currently playing at.

I love the strix haven campaign idea, just the concept that students are punished by the school having to pay an extra 500 gold. seriously how does that place make enough money?

you would think someone would like... sue the school or something for causing harm to students so blatantly

Did Kenny have any home brew with him and what spells did he use to summon creatures. I thought the idea of a cursed summoner would be very cool. Edit: Also if anyone has ideas for D&D characters please share them in the comments and also if anyone knows any campaigns that don’t cost money to join pls say it in the comments.

It was a modified version of 5E with special low level spells for conjuring. For curse effects, I just flipped a coin to see if the magic would be cursed, and manually controlled the spells in a way that'd mess stuff up lol

@@Shakespeare-_- for your party’s sake please don’t try to recreate Kenny in anyway, it’s a very bad idea. The sheer existence of a Kenny in a party is a burden to everyone else including the DM. Had I been a player at Kenny’s table I would have been absolutely livid to experience the dicking over he gave to everyone.

Yaknow, the one thing I'll give to dnd is the fact you can Essentially kill a turrasque with nothing but a endless quiver, a magic bow, and a fly sleep. Also it's simple junk food in terms of gameplay. Very easy to mow down on but little actual substance other then simple satisfaction. I like looking at TTRPG like foods because it's funny. Also the TT In TTRPG is a mini table, your welcome random reader or KZreadr who is really cool and scrolling to see which of the comments will be the funniest. Because self aware commentary is funny, isn't that right Velma? Oh wait she was supposed to be a punchline.

So Kenny died because he didn't want to be a team player and used magic on his own teammates to get his way. Cadence died because of unlucky and the supports failing to support The last one was just southpark dying over and over again

I hear so much shit thrown at people who like to play optimized characters (myself included), and every time I ask why they're like "well but like roleplay though," and I always point out you can roleplay well with optimized characters. The response I get is usually some form of "but like not as well as non-optimized characters though," which I disagree with, but, humoring them, I tend to follow up with "tell me about some of your non-optimized characters' epic sagas then!" And following this they're always like "well I had this one really cool guy! Who I put a lot of thought into the backstory and planned character arc for! ...and then he died before it happened BUT but there was this OTHER guy I made who was really cool! I mean he died before the backstory I wrote for him became relevant but THIS OTHER GUY I MADE had the most HEART WRENCHING BACKSTORY etc etc and then he died before I got to tell the story I wanted to..." and it takes so much energy not to cut them off at some point and be like "that's weird, the *cough* optimized *cough* characters I make usually survive to actually tell their stories, wonder what's up with yours"

I am fairly certain that the resurrections are paid for by people who find amusement in watching the students struggle and die. Of course, wish doesn't cost anything and has no chance to backfire if you use it to cast a level 7 or lower spell, but that would have some terrifying implications that the staff are overpowered Spellcasters with way to much free time on their hands.

I remember this one time I had a very toxic players where they had a he's a fit because I was playing a monster species race and I was playing a female you can see what this is going I was playing my character known as Maria striker the female Kobold bard who likes giving out hugs and getting head pets in return who is playing a support and healing class also keep in mind that DM was a little toxic as well I'm surprised I stayed in that campaigns for so long I should have got out as soon as possible basically the players were making some very unsavory comments to my character stuff that made me uncomfortable a couple times where they refused to heal me when I got injured because of their hatred to women and my character species after some arguing they healed my character but they are also the dumbest group I've ever met who in the right mind would cast a fireball in a room does located in the sewers with pounds and pounds of trash that is producing methane gas you can imagine what happens next knowing I was going to die I grabbed one of the shields from the party members and hidden a crack in the wall that was big enough to hide me the whole party got a little toasty even with their hatred of me I was able to heal them then later on we were supposed to travel through this desert I was the only one who came up the idea of gathering supplies the players thought to wing it I was able to bring enough food and water for us to survive across the desert until we came across a death knight the players decided to go and attack it as I stay behind feeling that something bad is about to happen I was right and those guys get their s*** kicked in by the death knight thing was way too powerful for us let's just say it took several tries of smacking this thing and me dragging the bodies back so I can heal them later on one of the players thought it would be a good idea to summon a demon to help us fly there that ended in failure and then demon end up trying to kill us when we get to this destination it happens to be a large Tower filled with monsters to stop a multi head dragon Lady for bringing put into this world there was missions and stuff like that that we had to follow but keep this is when the moment where I finally got fed up the moment that my DM had my character lose all her clothes and her favorite musical instrument that was given to her by her master that's when I decided to leave I also like to inform you that while this camping was going on my DM was one of those people that likes control people and force them to change without their consent he was trying to say that my Bard should be a front fighter keeps sending me these information about bards and stuff like that that I don't really care about I like to play as how I like to play then he had it where my character was forced into a relationship with a god and then forced into a relationship with a god forcing my character to play a Lyra instead of my guitar that my character got from her master keep in mind the reason why I chose bars is because I don't like dealing with gods I have problems dealing with them in the past pleasing them keeping them happy stuff like that I quickly told the DM I would not accept a God as a deity I think he just took that information and threw it away so he made it where the God if he's not pleased he can smite me pretty much I have no choice to have him is this one of those red flags that came up for this character I had a mission where I had to collect a few of these magical spell books that were very powerful that my character's Master used to have but someone stole them and my mission was to track them down keep in mind the master is more like a father figure who helped her out when she was in pain and lonely so when the DM had my characters guitar destroyed and had my characters clothing removed and then having them start doing some very uncomfortable and unsavory things to my character I finally just give up with a campaign and told them to go bleep themselves and left the campaign I was just sick and tired of the DM changing the rules harassing the crap out of me for choosing the type of healing and support kind of character like I like attacking creatures from a distance it's safer he was very control creep and the players were toxic so much that made me feel uncomfortable I know they're probably like those old people that don't think that monster races should be a playable character but still knowing them I have a feeling they might have their way with my character and then have her killed later on I had a feeling that was probably the planned before I left the players were acting very creepy when my character had no clothes on anymore as you can clearly understand why I left of course before I left I at least my bot that I have where it deletes all the messages in the server it basically prevents them to use any of the pictures I've posted or any comments I use I don't like having paper trails behind me. Anyway sorry about the vault text I hope you enjoy the story I can have given you but keep this in mind you're going to end up running into a toxic player base and DM keep your mind calm and collective and make sure that they can't get underneath your skin just be nice and if they're not the right people for you just leave the party but make sure you delete any messages that you left behind you don't want to leave that paper trail behind.
